Date time original has been replaced - how to fix?

Hi I use LR3 for a year or two and have a folder with more than 7000 pictures in everything from 2009.  The game was created in elements 8.0 probably arrange in 2009?

I noticed that somewhere along the line 658 of them have had the original capture time crushed at one point in time the 15 Nov.

They are all JPEG (before I had a camera RAW) and the changes are incorporated into the jpg file.

This issue was dealt with some tags and a few changes and filtered rejects.

I would like to get the timestamp of origin while images do not flow with the other 2000 + of those two months.

I have copies of the originals with correct timestamp - but without tags etc. that they were created at the time of importation.

I tried to copy one of the originals of backup and overwrite the file 'invalid date' using windows and then import the file metadata and it corrects the date - but loses the keywords etc.

If I use LR to import back up - first he does not see the backup as duplicate - despite the file name is the same - I guess that the date he throws?  so, I end up with duplicates - one on each date; good + bad

My question is: Y at - it a way to re-read the metadata of origin both in the catalogue of files / and retain key words (such as a selective merge)?

It would be good to have a solution rather than having to manually identify the incorrect files and copy or make a mass reading of metadata and lose all keywords original.

Thanks in advance

Mike

Thanks John,

I downloaded the exif tool + gui - I can see how it is supposed to work and have successfully dealt with a single file (even when I got the wrong name that it always copied the EXIF time!)

I'm going to further investigate how to make a batch and use the command line

Thanks for your quick response to my problem.

I have all you need to know how to get - will take a few weeks, but I'm confident, I can do it!

Thanks Mike

A week later I now found in it.  I used the gui of exif tool - which was very simple to use once I sat quietly for 10 minutes!  Successfully, I copied and updated the exif data correct including the time of capture since the original backup files.  My metadata keywords remained intact, when I then updated the metadata of the disk setting in lightroom.

EXIF is a great tool and I found it easy to use AM pro - I couldn't see the attributes of the picture in the trial download makes it so difficult to sort by date.

In any case my problem was overcome thanks
