Defraging harddrive
I tired to defragment my hard drive under Vista. It ran all night and never finished, I had to cancel the process. What should I do to accomplish this task of maintenance? Also, is there no function 'check disk' in Vista to tell me if I need to defragment?
Thank you

Unless you do the video or the music editing, no defragmentation is necessary under OS X. All that is taken in charge on the fly. With the help of a Defrag tool is not only useless, but can be dangerous.
If you need to do, the best way to accomplish this IMO is to clone your system to another disk, wipe your drive and clone it back. Clean as a whistle with no fragmentation and you can't mess with a disk utility that tries to follow the small beads of return.

Years, I used to defragment a hard disk to condense the data so there is not a lot of 'holes' where were the deleted files. The story was that these holes were left after a deletion because new files are too large to fit. So the HD got rid of the holes and gave more space used by the files together green onions. Do we still need to do? Is this a good idea even if it is 'useless' to do? And... How would you do it? A disk utility any? I run El Capitan version 10.11.5 on an iMac i5 running old 4Yr.
Thank you very much, JIM

No need to defragment, OS X handles low-level disk maintenance automatically. Utility of third parties who claim to optimize or accelerate a Mac will usually do the opposite.

How to defragment the system disk?
On my HP Windows 7 computer, the system drive access to the Disk Defragmenter tool showed a growing fragmentation since I bought the computer about 14 months ago. Despite the warning that only discs which can be defragmented appear, the entrance to the system drive refuses to defrag (all other defrag properly). The system drive now shows fragmentation of 26%, so there is obviously files being written and rewritten on this subject. Unless I'm missing something, the reader certainly require defragmentation. But how to do?

I also use Diskeeper 2010 (version Professional first) and it keeps all my system files defragmented - I don't know it would deal with the problems you encounter (you can try a fully functional version for 30 days to see what it will do for you).
It is very reliable and I have never had any problems with it whatsoever (the company has been around for a long time and they have great technical support if necessary).
In my opinion, it's the best defragmentation solution available because it runs in the background (so you can use the computer while it defrags) and it also prevents the fragmentation. I suggest you to get the test and try - you can learn more about it at http://www.diskeeper.com/
There is a free offer here for the full Pro first 2011 version of Diskeeper. [Edit - the last of the free copies are spoken for.]

I'm a model of the computer and it's my first computer. I have a head injury which does not help that I do things backwards, etc. Technical things are difficult for me. I need to know if Mozilla can scan my computer to see if I need to defragment files on the hard disk that I don't know how if she needs to. I do not know how to copy and paste, can you help me?

A method that works in Firefox, on regular test files in Windows XP, and in fact, in many programs on different operating systems is of as follows- SELECT
highlight the required text, usually for example holding the left button of the mouse down and dragging the mouse. Otherwise for example within these messages or on Web sites using HotKey Ctrl + A to select all the IE all the message, or all the page or address bar when the mouse pointer is. - COPY
Use Ctrl + C (while the object/text is selected as above) - DOUGH
Use Ctrl + V AFTER you move the mouse pointer on the target location
- Keyboard shortcuts
CTRL + A is the abbreviation of
- Press the 'Ctrl' key or the command (often at the bottom left of the keyboard) and press and hold
- Press the 'A' (no need to use the shift key)
DEFRAG
You should be able to defragment the drive of the computer from the Windows XP operating system. It is not something that Firefox will do for you.A method in XP if I remember correctly, is to find the drive icon, and then right-click to get a Properties dialog. A tab or option is tools, which will have a defrag & /or analyse the option. It will also be possible to do so in the options in the control panel.

Should I defragment HARD drive front of cloning of SSD?
Hello everyone.
I just bought a Pro Series Q SSD 256 GB 2.5.
Now I want to clone my old HDD together at a new SSD using NTI Echo 3 to Toshiba.
Should I defragment my HARD old disc before the cloning process (in this case, I wonder just about the best SSD performance and life expectancy, I dislike about the time of cloning).
Disk defragmentation HARD impact positively on SSD performance in this scenario, or it will be irrelevant?
I'd appreciate advice.Kind regards
In my opinion, it is not necessary, but of course, it also will not affect the performance of the SSD...

I have a laptop HP Pavilion dvt7-3000 CTO that has a single disk drive hard 500 GB. The operating system has been improved in Windows7 Pro (64-bit) to Windows 8 Pro (64-bit), but the problem occurs in both operating systems. When conducting the defragmentation of the different hard disks (C:\ D:\, HP tools and system), the percent of the "System" drive which is fragmented never changes, while the % fragmented adequately for other readers going to 0%. Over time, the system part of the hard disk rose to 27% fragmented. How to defragment this drive?
Hello
The system partition contains the boot files and recovery for Windows 7 environment and should not be défragmentée. It will always appear to be fragmented and it is quite normal - force this partition defragment would almost certainly avoid the Windows startup. In addition, the fragmentation in this small partition has absolutely no effect on performance.
For much the same reasons, the recovery partitions or HP_TOOLS must be défragmentées.
Kind regards

How do I defragment my hard drive?
I have a Mid 2010 Mac OSX 10.8.5 installed Pro. I tried to do the upgrade to El Capitan but wanted to make a backup of the system before I upgraded. I want to do the backup on my external hard drive I use Time Machine to make backups on. I have a 500 GB Seagate Free Agent external hard drive. I've trashed a LOT of old files on this subject so I expect to see a lot of room open upward after that I did own upward. When I started, I saw that there were some 40 available 500 GB. After that I trashed (and emptied the Recycle Bin), there are a few available 85 GB. I remember the years there, I used to defragment some of my hard drives, but it is a long time over ten years ago. Would it not useful to do that to my free Agent drive to win more space? And if so, where can I find this information on the defragmentation?
Pay free them space on a drive. Erase the entire disk (or buy a)

Satellite P10-504 - Defrag does not work properly
HI all, I am a little concerned about my defrag report.
When analyzing, the first third is mainly blue with thin red lines, the rest is white with massive two bits of green and red lines. After defragmentation it looks any better, said the report that 10 GB couldn't be moved doc/settings and a lot of little things.
No matter how many times I defragment I get the same results and although I analyze after defrag it says always defragment now.I tried the Windows tools to repair bad sectors, but nothing helped. I would say just having said all that, the computer even if a bit slow seems to work ok, with no real problems but would like advice

whenever I have try to defragment my laptop restarts, I don't need to defrag because my system is slow
Hello
It is very interesting question, but in my view the correct answer to your question, you should look on the Microsoft page because it is a typical problem of operating system. If I found a few explanations, I'll let you know.
Please check if the laptop restarts always in the same position (22%). In this case, it is possible that a sector on the HARD disk may be damaged or corrupted.

How do I defragment & cleaning Satellite C650 with Windows 7
How do I defragment & cleaning Satellite C650 with Windows 7?
Hi toddlingham,
I agree with Akuma. Disk Defragmenter tool is also available on Windows 7 and CCleaner may clean the registry and delete the temporary files and not used. It is very nice tool.
Also I recommend you to uninstall all the programs you n t need more to clean install. For example, you can remove all evaluation software and applications that you don't need.

Defrag tool shows all my discs, including a SYSTEM drive that she needs to defragment. However it won't let me not defragment the SYSTEM disk. I click on "Analyze" and it shows 14% fragmented. I click on "Optimize" and the screen flashes and nothing happens. All other disks défragmentent normally, including automatically and manually. This problem occurred under Windows 7 (which was originally on the machine when I bought it) and now Windows 8. I have a HP 580 t and I am system administrator.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hello
The system partition should not be défragmentée - it contains the boot files and recovery for Windows 7 environment and appear always need to defrag so analyzed. It is also important to note that this "apparent framentation" has absolutely no effect on the performance of your PC.
Kind regards

How to do a defrag (I think that's what you call)?
How to do a defrag (I think that's what it's called)
on an IMac computer
There usually no need to do a defrag, as long as you keep a decent amount of free space on the disk (the boot volume). The system works defragmentation for smaller size in the background files and large files fragmented usually has no performance impact. The most important is the free spacefragmentation; performance can suffer if any of your remaining free space is in small fragments scattered on your storage media. This happens more severely if the amount of free space on your startup disk starts to become really low, and you continue to use your system in this way.
To do a defrag, you need a third-party utility such as Tech Tool Pro. I don't know what version of the operating system of the Mac you're using. be sure to check the system requirements. It's a very good idea to create a backup complete, like a clone bootable on an external drive, before using one of these utilities to Defrag. If something happens, like a your Mac turns off my mistake during defragmentation, the disc may be damaged. And you also need to be started from another disk to defragment your drive boot, so using the bootable backup to run defragmentation is a way.
It can be useful if you provided more information, such as your iMac model and the version of the OS. And also WHY you ask this question.
