Delete secure files, i.e. from word, excel, etc.

I want to give my office at my teenager for his own use, but I need to delete sensitive files from the hard drive business-related. I was told that vista automatically creates best ghost within the system and the only completely secure method is to wipe the hard drive completely and reinstall the software program. This seems extreme. Is there an alternative?
