Hello

Shortcuts to sites will initially their own custom icon when you create a shortcut. This icon is called a "favicon.ico" and is stored in the temporary Internet files (TIF) cache, which is where all website files, are stored when you visit them.

When the user performs a maintenance and removes the TIF cache, all these custom icons are removed with everything else. This will cause the icon of Internet Explorer by default to display on these shortcuts. This also occurs when the maximum allowed disk space has been exceeded and that the files are deleted automatically to maintain the use of disk space.

If you want to keep custom icons for a longer period of time, you can increase the disk space limit for the cache. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools/Internet Options. In the browsing history section, select the settings button. You can change the disk space here.

If you want to keep custom permanently by shortcuts icons, you can open Windows Explorer, copy / paste the following path in the (change user for your account name) address bar C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 (AppData is a hidden folder. You can go to organize/folder and Search Options/View tab and select this option to display the hidden files and folders).

In the Content.IE5 folder and subfolders alphanumeric name, locate the custom icon you want to save. Right-click on the file and select copy. Create a folder somewhere in your user folder and paste the file into this folder. You can then rename the custom with an intuitive name icon.

Go to the shortcut on the desktop, right click on the shortcut and click Properties/Change icon. Click Browse and navigate to the folder where you saved the custom icon and select it. OK your way out of this dialog box and click Open.

This icon continuously displays the shortcut.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for using Windows 7

    Hello

At the beginning, some of my desktop icons becomes square black.

This happens on some days and works very well on other days.

Anyone facing the same problem? Has anyone found a reason/solution?

Please HELP and THANKS in ADVANCE!

    Hello

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

You did changes to the computer before the show?

This problem may occur if there is a problem with the graphics integrated drivers for the card. Integrated card provides lower performance unless a updated drivers are installed or iconcache.db file may be corrupted which is responsible for the desktop icons.

Try the following steps to re-create the iconcache.db file:
    1. Go to the Start screen
    2. Type Control Panel in the search box
    3. Open the Control Panel->, click the window Folder Options->when the Folder Options appears.
    4. Select the View tab and check the option "Show hidden files, folders and drives" : while you change the folder options, you can also disable the option "Hide extensions of known file types": see file extensions should make it easier to recognize the files we'll meet along the way. Don't worry, if you do not like these changes, you can always change when you are finished.
    5. Then goto C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local, where [user] should be replaced with the actual login name of your user account. While in the AppData\Local folder, double-click Microsoft, then Windows, then on the Solution Explorer, to navigate to the following folder:

C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer You will find files Iconcache.db-> to force Windows to re-create its icon cache, you must remove all iconcache files that appear in this folder, and which should fix all the damaged icons that you see on your Windows 8/8.1
    desktop computer.

Also, I suggest you to update to the latest graphics drivers from the manufacturer's Web site.

    Download and install the drivers

  • The desktop icons are pixelated

I am running Windows XP Service Pack 3. Recently, a lot of my desktop icons, icons on the bar of tasks and the icons in the list all programs severely becomes pixelated. They re not only mediocre quality, but they are totally pixelated to the point where you can't determine which program they are associated with.

Originally, this problem was on for users but it has since become a problem for 2 users of the system.

I've read other postings that mention deleting the iconcache.db with a reboot. I renamed the file rather than delete it and all the icons immediately were "repaired". A reboot (not a cold start) has worked. After closing the system and reboot, the icon problem is back. The iconcache.db was visible in the folder after the restart, only the renamed file. (Yes, I've hidden files visible enabled).

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

  • my desktop icons are of normal size, but the image that represents the shortcut that is MSNBC, is very low in the center of the icon

I have to resize the icons, just the image in them... Thank you!!!

You can have the Web site icon, but it will be not bigger: it is stuck at 16 by 16 pixels.  This is how the icons on Web pages are programmed.  It's not for lack of Microsoft: it's just the reality of the world.  If you forced the site of MSN icon to be large enough to match the size of the "large" view desktop icons, that's what it would look like:

Of course they don't want people to complain about the ugly tense icon, and since Microsoft cannot replace the icon for each Web page in the world, they simply leave it at the default size so it looks nice.
Given their big stretch would become extremely blurred, Windows leaves these icons low resolution to their normal size, centered insizing a box.
    >> If you only want it to be as big as XP, you can always do: just to right click on the desktop, select display, then Classic icons... Classic is the size THAT used XP.  Stretched above example is what it would be if you choose Medium or Large inside Windows Vista or 7, which is bigger than anything XP could ever show.

If it was useful, you can vote by clicking on the green triangle. If it solves the problem, click on propose as answer. Thank you!

  • My of .exe desktop icons are now. Can ink file, anyone help to get rid of it?

    Hello

I started a game in the start menu, but he asked the program where to open.
    I chose the right .exe
Then, all the desktop icons that are .exe are now. Of ink file and opens with this game, and then the error flashes that it cannot be opened.
    I use Windows 7 64-bit.
From what you have stated above, I think that the file association for LNK files has been given misdirection to the MyGame.exe. I've seen this happen when opening a program via a shortcut (for example. LNK file), you are asked what type of program to open it with. After selecting the MyGame.exe (or another program) via the Select a program from a list of programs installedand check always use the selected program to open this type of file (circled in red below), the document or program referenced by the shortcut of origin opens in MyGame.exe as it should.

The problem is that now all shortcuts (for example. LNK files) on the desktop or in the Explorer will want to be opened by MyGame.exe and use icon MyGame.exe to display the shortcut no matter what shortcut was originally intentioned to open. This is known as a file association and the default icon. The same condition can occur if you have performed these actions 'Open with' on one. JPG or even a. EXE, but the. LNK explanation is much more likely for the items on the desktop.

The good news is that a small free utility was written to cancel the. LNK file association was created. There is also a registry hack to achieve, but I recommend the utility unAssoc for its ease of use. I used to send people on another site to download this utility, but this site has become confused with all the ads and fake download links. I put a copy on my SkyDrive here.

Just download, then use the utility to unassociate the. LNK files for the user or globally delete the file type and let windows rebuild a new default.

  • Why, suddenly, my desktop icons are difficult to align because they can be moved very small distances?

For years, my desktop icons have acted as if they have so many 'slots' to enter in on the office. But this has never been a problem. They were easier to align because they were right next to each other, or a 'slot' above/below/apart.

Now, for some reason, I can travel distances of small icons on the desktop, as if they were scalar elements which can be minimally pushed open. Suddenly there are not more "slots", and sort of paradoxically icons are more difficult to assemble and align because I have to keep their repositioning so that they are straight. Before, they were either straight, or a whole notch offline.

It is NOT correct. Right-click and select Show , and then turn on Align

But when it opens this page, all my desktop icons go clear/white and one by one, they all return with their correct icons. And all this happens in a few seconds.
Why is the operation of Firefox every night for the first time, my desktop icons?

I suspect that you have both nightly and Firefox version installed?
