Desktop icons changed to c:\ guest unable to run many programs as it comes back to c:\

It won't work as most of security as it does the same thing... confused! Tried the command "assoc" in safe mode, but it did nothing

did the same on most programs, but with the name of the program etc the last line.

strange. perhaps running a sfc (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html) scan could do something...

otherwise I am of ideas, sorry.

I'll click on the button "me too had this issue" so I hope that someone will help you better.

  • Windows XP: desktop icons changed to the same names, but retained their original functions

    Hello

I know that put at the point before, but the problem was never properly solved. I have Windows XP. While I was changing the name of one of my Office Word Document files yesterday, all of a sudden all my desktop icons changed under the same name. I can't tell you how it happened. 'My computer', 'My Documents', 'Trash' 'Internet Explorer', 'Adobe Reader', 'Corel Photo House', "MS Paint", "HP Solution Center" and eight other program launch icons, as well as 12 document records and 25 files of Word document on my desk, all had the same name change that I'd just been undertaken with one Word on my desktop files. Each icon has yet launched the successful operation or properly open to its original content.

I called my friends in the Geek Squad to two different Best Buys and they had never heard of him. I called Microsoft Corp. in Washington State and spoke to someone there. He had never heard of this before but found a couple of reports, one in 2006 and one in 2009. He said that he asked around the House Microsoft and if he could find an answer, post it on the forum.

No one was able to tell me how it could happen and no one could tell me how to fix it.

I then, on my own, done a restore of the system in two days. He restored the original names on all the items that I have listed above and it restored the original names on all 12 desktop file folders. But it does not restore the names under the 25 Word document files. Those that I had to open individually to see what they were and then rename them manually the original name. Would enjoy to hear your opinion on this.

    Pete Speth

    Hi Pete,.

I tried what you wrote... Select all the files, rename one file and all the files are renamed automatically - as I thought - but for a change of my computer, my network places and My Document obtained renamed the sting that it represents in the registry! I tried CTRL + Z file names seem to be restored, but not for the default icons!... Seems interesting...

    Hello

You will remember to do recent changes on the computer before this problem?

I suggest you to change the size of the icons and check if the problem persists. Follow the steps mentioned below:

    a. right click on the desktop, click view , and turn off the Auto Arrange.

    b. after above step. Right click on the desktop, click view choose on the icon size you want and check if the problem persists.

    Hi Jacob,

Welcome to the community Microsoft and thanks for posting the question.

From the description, it looks like you changed the default binding for all files in Word format. Am I wrong?

Follow the instructions in the link to change the file association for files.

  • All the desktop icons change set to an incompatible program.

The desktop icons all try to open with the same program, so for most fail. Restart doen't fix it. Restore to a previous point failed to 3 different restore times. At present, everything is tempting (and failing) to open it in SKYPE!  Web sites and email work OK after some fiddling. Please, any help?

    Hello

-What do you mean by "all the desktop icons must change size?
-Did you do changes on the computer before this problem?

Method 1: I suggest to maintain the computer in clean boot mode and check if the problem persists.
A clean boot to check if startup item or services to third-party application is causing this issue.
You can read the following article to configure the computer to boot:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: After the troubleshooting steps, see step 7 in binding boot is a way of putting your computer to normal startup mode.

Method 2: I suggest you to make sure that all device drivers (such as display cards, network cards, keyboard, mouse, etc) are more recent and compatible with Windows 7.
Updated a hardware driver that is not working properly
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isn ' t-work correctly

Method 3: I suggest using Microsoft Safety scanner and check if it helps.

    Microsoft safety scanner

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again. The Microsoft Safety Scanner is not a replacement for the use of antivirus software that offers continuous protection. For a real-time protection that helps you keep your home or small office PC against viruses, spyware and other malicious software, download Microsoft Security Essentials.

    Hope this information helps.

    No, it is not normal.

    2. do a system restore. Choose the date until windows updated have been installed as your restore point.

HijackThis is designed to run on 32-bit operating systems.  Your logbook indicates that you are running a 64-bit operating system.  Unfortunately, HijackThis is unable to produce a precise log for 64-bit systems.

You should not attempt any kind of correction after the HijackThis log information.
