It is more noticeable in high-contrast environments like photographing a person in front of a bright ocean.

  You can use the HDR setting in the camera app makes up for it by taking pictures:

  HDR (High Dynamic Range) allows you to get great pictures in contrast situations. When shooting with the iSight camera, iPhone takes several photos in quick succession at different exposure settings - and they are based. The resulting picture has better details in bright areas and half-tones.
