DRS necessary for Resource Pools? (vSphere 5)

Hello

We make the leap of XenServer to VMWare at the minute and watch vSphere Standard as a starting block.

I am looking to use Pools of resources in order to manage resources - is this correct for resource pools work I need DRS (which isn't available in the package of the company)?

If so, should I still DRS to reserves, limits and shares for each VM?

Thank you

Tim

Hi Tim,.

the use of resource within a Cluster HA pools to Drs without DRS you can create pools of resource for single guests only.

DRS is not necessary for reservations, the limits of virtual machines.

For more information on the management of the resource, check out this doc:

Kind regards

Is it possible to assign the DRS rules to Resource Pools instead of creating groups of DRS and adding to the DRS group VMs and then creating a rule
I ask this question because of a problem that I currently have
I am far from being an expert as you'll see soon and back to the use of support groups
If it I'll give you my scenario
I have 4 ESX host in my test group
2 hosts are connected to zFCP
And all 4 are connected to independent contractors
I have a resorce pool call FC and another called ISCSI
We constantly evolve around VM between these 2 pools
The highest availability VM remains on the rest on ISCSI FC
I would like to create a rule that States if a virtual machine is in the RP FC then he must reside on host A and B, and if it resides on ISCSI it can reside on any host
I realize that there is still other issues involved here as data themselves warehouses
but it is another matter that he owns the rights
We migrate VMs and the data store when we leave the virtual machine to another RP 1
If the rule would be always true
I would like to hear from you
    on this topic
for now I just use rules and groups of DRS
    Thank you

I don't think this is possible from the point of view of rule affinity DRS, as he has no relationship with resources or VM disk pools. This seems to be a single-use resource pools.

You could probably do with a set of scripts PowerCLI who would check two resource pools and ensure that the virtual machines to the breast have their records on the correct data store and if not do a svMotion.

    Concerning

You can also check the Extended Properties of the vCenter target target and make sure that vSphere.PowerCLI.User and vSphere.PowerCLI.Password are set correctly.  These are separate credentials from the user Runtime as they are used when Discovery must call PowerCLI.  They usually take the form domain\username as username.  You can easily test these credentials by trying to connect to the vClient with them.  I would also check that this account has appropriate permissions, put in place in order to perform discovery, as Lee suggested.

  • Good candidates for the resource pools?

Hi, I do not currently use resource pools, but often the impression that I should watch more in him.  We have our four node 5.1 cluster 16 web servers (among others in the virtual computer) that are exactly the same and serve the same function.  I was wondering if those who would be good candidates to be added to a pool of resources, so they can take resources needed?  I tend to approve statically the RAM and CPU on these "just in case", but maybe it's stupid, if there is a better way.  Thank you.

Also consider that if you have no compelling reason to prioritize resources for all virtual machines on one of the virtual computer, then you really don't have a reason to use the resource to all pools.  In this case, each virtual computer will be given some memory he needs on demand, DRS will balance the load between the hosts if a host is out of balance, and there will be fairness when ESXi pray return of VMs pages when there is a conflict.

Discover the vSphere resources management Guide, you will find everything you always wanted to know about the Pools of resources and any other topic of management resources in general.

  • Use of the Resource Pool with vSphere Essentials

A silly question but I have to ask anyway:

I have a license of vSphere Essentials with my two hosts ESXi4.  I knew that he was not in vSphere DRS.  What was not so obvious to me, it's that you need DRS activated in order to create a pool of resources to the cluster level vSphere without it.  (The option to create a new cluster is grayed out). http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1004098

    So my question is:

Are there benefits to creating a cluster if you do not have DRS?  I now have to double and create pools of resources at the level of the host for two guests, who is an administrative burden.  In addition, one of the main reasons I have used resource pools was to facilitate the access rights based upon roles to specific virtual machines.   These two will now have to be defined for each host.

We greatly appreciate your comments on this

Other than the ability to use the VCA mode and setting up the location of the pagefile.  According to me, there isn't much more to a cluster if you use no HA or DRS.  Since you do not have DRS yor cannot create pools of resources that span multiple hosts within a cluster.

You will need to create individual pools of resources on each host by taking your host from a cluster and have just in the data center.

  • VCD went 1.5 after resource pools DRS toggle

    Hello

We have just reconfigured the Cluster, where we organize our vDC and the vOrgs (a test environment for the moment).

I disabled the DRS and enabled him, which caused all the resource pools should be deleted.

This prevents the vCD to create new virtual machines for the vOrgs, so, basically, we cannot work with vCD, not more.

Is it possible to restore the resource pools or to the vCD to start a recreation of them?

I don't want to reconfigure alle vOrgs, committees, networks, etc.

You will need to re-create the resource pools in VC, restore virtual machines to resource pools. Then you need to go in the VCD database and manually remap the VCD inventory for new resource pools. Is not something that everyone should try themselves. You should file a SR support and application of GSS to do.

  • Requirements for the use of Resource Pools

VMware says this about the Enterprise more than vSphere version:

Delegation and control of resource pool. Guarantee

allocation of resources to different levels in society. For example,.

When a top-level administrator makes available a list of resources of a

use of across the Department, all virtual machine creation and management can be

made by the administrator of Department within the limits

    assigned to the resource pool.

Having said that pools of resources cannot be created without the Enterprise more than VMware version? Or is he just saying that there is additional capacity to delegate control on resource pools in the company and others that it is in other versions?

    Thanks for your comments.

Enterprise Plus is not required to create and use pools of resources.   With respect to the issuance of licenses to create/use the resource pools, a free license would suffice even.  The characteristics of Advance you are referring to a probably related specifically to the business + licenses.

  • Use / dedicated resource pool for resources upgrade/calendar

    Hi all
I use the dedicated resource pool (each worker has its own calendar, crafts and scheduled vacation) same calendar is also used by any project I'm doing for the annex. We have 9 hours working day Monday-Thursday while Friday, we work for 8 hours as replacement Friday is turned off (annex 9/80). However, I have the resources allocated to the tasks, but when I check my sheet to use resources that some of my resources are also working on the days that are disabled (for example on Fridays) and also the resources work only 8 hours a day while the calendar is set for 9 a.m. schedule.
I use these schedule and all the parameters of the previous planner that I replace which unfortunately could not transfer the knowledge for a beginner like me. I think I do a good job my employer is concerned that it is not so unhappy, but I know that I have room for improvement.
If I could figure this thing out, I'll have my use of time by the pool of resources that I have and that's what I want to see.
I could use the upgrade provided by the primavera, but it cannot take effect as I want, so fixing the problem that I mentioned above can help me more have leveled and responsible program.
My next step after solving this problem is going to be track cost using primavera (currently we do on spreadsheets).
Looking forward to hear from you all experienced pros.
    Thank you.

Hello. go to the tab of the default for the selected project project detail. set the default calendar for new activities to the desired calendar (for example the global calendar you want as well your activities and resources to use).
You can consider using dependent on resources like the default activity type for new activities (which will plan duration of activity according to the resource calendar (s) when planning)
    hope this helps,

  • 'Custom actions' of the CPU in the Resource Pools: should I also set the VMs child on "custom"?

    Hello world

Imagine a VMware vSphere 4.1 cluster managed, of course, by vCenter Server, with some 4.1 ESXi hosts.

This cluster has 3 Pools of resources: development, Production, quality

Now consider that the Resource Pools have been initially implemented in the following way, about the 'actions' for 'CPU resources':

    -Development: Shared low =

    -Quality: Sharing = Medium

    -Production: Sharing high =

Several virtual machines were placed in the Resource Pools. Some virtual machines are single vCPU, but others are vSMP ones: some have 2 vCPU and some of them have 4 vCPU.

Now, I read the following articles of the (large) put at disposal by Duncan Epping, VMware, in his blog "Yellow brick", on "Resource Pools" and actions:

The Resource Pool priority-Pie Paradox - yellow bricks [written by Craig Risinger]

    Actions on Resource Pools

    http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2010/12/14/shares-set-on-resource-pools/

Actions on a Resource Pool, custom scripted

    http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2010/02/24/custom-shares-on-a-resource-pools-scripted/

Now, imagine that I have manually changed several Pools of resources from low/normal/high "Custom" and gave them the following values:

    -Development: 3000

    -Quality: 6000

    -Production: 9000

The virtual machines inside each Resource Pool appear to be all set up to 'Actions' = 'Normal '.

I want to know is this:

1 - since I changed Resource Pool shares 'Low' / 'Normal' / 'High' to 'Custom', I should / need to change the 'actions' in each individual VM from "Normal" to "Custom"?

2 - I'm guessing that the sum of the actions of all virtual machines in a Resource Pool must be equal to the actions that I gave to this Pool of resources. Am I wrong?

3 - I also guess that the only practical way to make this change to Virtual PCs, if necessary, is to generate scripts, preferably using PowerCLI. Friend, I have right?

    Thanks in advance!

    See you soon,.

    Ricardo

Whatever resources the resource pool level are applicable to this pool of resources and will get the part accordingly. So that resources will be divided between the virtual machines according to the shares they hold.

    Example:-two pool of resources A and B.

Total cycles CPU = 10000 Cycles CPU

A part (custom set) = 6000 CPU Cycle.

Part B (custom set) = Cycle CPU 4000.

Now a resource pool has three virtual machines powered with shares.so high normal and low on this desire to cycles CPU 6000 cases divided among them in 4:2:1

    VM1 have = 4 * 6000/7 = 3428 cycles cpu.

    VM2 will get = 2 * 6000/7 = 1714 cycles cpu.

    Vm3 will get = 1 * 6000/7 = 857 cycles cpu.

so according to your requirement, you can change your actions at the level of the virtual machine.

PS:shares come into picture when there is a conflict.

  • vCenter security - limiting the devs to a Resource Pool

I want to set up a role limiting a team of developers to the resource pool.  I would like that they are able to create virtual machines and modify, download files to data warehouses, and all the devs thing is usually necessary to do, but keep them in a sandbox is limited to a pool of resources.  I don't want them to be able to play with virtual machines in other pools of resources, or have admin access stuff in vCenter data centre.

Is it possible, or should I create a second data center and use it for developers?

I'm fairly new to vCentre, so feel free to correct all incorrect concepts in my mind

    Hello

Yes it is possible. I do it myself.

The key is to make a record that matches your resource pools that the permissions on the resource pools don't always translate permissions on the virtual machines. Since you talk about virtual machines and resource pools you need of several buildings.

The first is to limit what resource pools, they can even see, that by placing a role and permission on the specific resource pool.

The second is to limit what VMs, they can even see/affect, that placing a role and permissions on the specific folder that mimics the resource pool.

In addition, you want to apply the network and other permissions, restricting what vswitches what they see when they create a VM, etc..

Everything is possible but complex quite quickly.

  • Is there a default resource pool?

All - I read the white paper on esxtop that was written by Scott Drummond and can be found here - & gt; http://communities.VMware.com/docs/doc-9279 In this one, page 9, under the definition of 'State', he said:

While the state memory of the host is not used to determine if the memory should be retrieved from virtual machines (which
decision is made at the level of the resource pool), it may affect what mechanisms are used to retrieve the memory if necessary.
In the States high and soft, ballooning is favored over permutation. In States hard and low, swapping is favored by report
    balloon flight

So my question is, what happens if I do not defined resource pools?  Is there a default pool?  If not, are there any rehabilitation of the memory available for my guests/guests?

"Every independent host and each DRS cluster has a pool of resources of root (invisible) which brings together the resources of the host or a cluster. The resource pool root does not appear because the resources of the host (or cluster) and the root resource pool are always the same. "- extract from http://pubs.vmware.com/vi35u2/resmgmt/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=resmgmt&file=vc_resource_pools.5.2.html

  • The list of all the Resource Pools that are part of a group of ESXi

    Hello

I'm trying to get a piece of code work that will list all the resource pools that are present in a cluster of ESXi.

    • I know I can find what list of resources of a virtual machine resides in.  I don't want that.

// Find a matching resource pool on an ESXi hosts
      var esxiCluster = esxiHost.parent;
      var esxiClusterResourcePools = esxiCluster.resourcePool_ResourcePool;

      System.log("what is the ESXi cluster: " + esxiCluster.name);
      System.log("vimtype: " + esxiCluster.vimType);
      System.log("what pools exists: " + esxiClusterResourcePools);

So I know that the vimType will come back with what I expect (ClusterComputeResource).  The question I have is the object "resourcePool" is reference to the root resource list (in my case, it is 'resources').

What I want is all DRS resource pools are configured.  I need something like "resourcePool_ResourcePool.children".

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Resource pool limit Datastore Quota

    Hello

I need to limit the quota of data store for a specific group, e.g. they can only allocate 1 TB to 10 TB data store for their virtual machines.

CPU and RAM are possible with resource pools, but how can I accomplish this with data warehouses?

what you are asking for can be easily achieved in vRealize Automation or vCloud Director.

But in the vSphere environment, you have to achieve by using roles and permissions, where you create datastore with limited storage space and assign permission to users wished to not to exceed the use of storage space after certain limit. That way they won't see all data warehouses and they will not be able to use all the space.

  • Reservation of CPU Resource Pool

    Hello everyone

I need feedback on pools of resources, and in particular for the CPU share uses.

I read the "Mastering Vmware vSphere 5.5" and I understand how Vmware works for the share of the CPU.

I have the a customer who want to buy me a resource pools for this virtual machine management. He will buy vCPU 26 and 64 GB of RAM.

I know how to set up the RAM, but I did not how to do for the CPU.

I started by 26 multiples by the clock of the CPU, but the value is higher or lower than 1 ESXi. So I think I made a mistack.

Can someone help me to understand how do for the CPU resource pool.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Best regards

    Matt

    Hi Matt,

Personally, I put a limit of 2 GHz by heart. CPU host have 3.0 GHz. On this way a big vm as you can 'kill' the host and other virtual machines on it.

When you use the same limit, you will need to set the limit at 52000 MHz (26 x 2000 MHz Cores).

    Kind regards
