Dual-boot-2 - MBR and GPT disks

I built a PC with a dual-boot, with the disc has been formatted using MBR and the two OS is Vista and 7. A table is written to the MBR with pointers in the two BONES, with this visible table before the start, allowing me to choose one or the other. Well, it's logical.

But what will happen in the following scenario? I have install Vista on an MBR disk, remove the disc, install a second disk MBR and install 7. Then I put on the first disc in the PC, attach SATA cables and press the power switch. What is going on? Do not I have a dual boot situation where pointers are not written, in other words, the dual-boot will exist only as long as both drives are connected? Or MBR a disk will have pointers to the two OS written in it, leading to the same situation to have two OS on one drive? And if the pointers are written on a drive, which makes the master, which drive is chosen and why? I guess that the chosen drive would be first in the sequence of port, for example, 0 before 1.

And what will happen if the two drives had been formatted using GPT? Any difference?

If you install Windows Vista on a disc (call it drive #1) and Windows 7 on another drive (disc 2) with deleted #1 disk then you will not have a dual boot system. You can choose which drive / OS you want / load (select a specific disc) in the BIOS menu when you turn on first of all of the computer. It is the same with TPG.

If your drive is running out of space because two versions of Windows installed there is a way to move Windows 7 to another drive and do not have to perform a new installation.

  • Convert disk dual boot Mac MBR to GPT (GUID)

    Hello.

I use a Macbook Pro 13 in. Non-retine mid-2012. I currently have OS X 10.8.4 (I think, something of 10.8) double booted with Windows 7 Home Premium x 64. My boot drive is a 128 GB SSD that came with the laptop. I want to convert this startup disk to the GPT (GUID) Partition Table, so I can install Ubuntu with the three operating systems. He came in TPG, I think, but I broke the table to partition a bit backward and had to wipe the disk and do a recovery Internet reinstall (downgrade OS X 10.9 to 10.8) and * sigh * reinstall Windows. Anyway,.

Is there a way I can convert the MBR to GPT (GUID) partition table without ruining all the data or perform some operating systems unbootable?

Correction: I have disk configuration in a hybrid MBR, so my question is: is it possible to switch the hybrid MBR GPT partition without having to wipe the drive and reinstall operating systems?

  • Different capacities in the management of the MBR and GPT disks

    Hello

Disk management capacity will be change according to the type of partition.

    2 TB; MBR = GB 1863,02 ; TPG = GB 1862,89
When using 1 TB of HARD drive. MBR = GB 931,54 ; TPG 931,42 GB
For example, GPT and MBR will be shown a different ability in disk management.

  • Satellite C850 - 19(d) - I want to do a dual boot with Linux and Win 8

    Last week I had a Satellite C85O - PSCBWE-03200WGR 19(d)

Yesterday, I try to make a dual boot with Ubuntu.

I do not have a start to boot from USB, or iso CD (same choices as for the Toshiba application), and I did one on the bios:
    -Disable secure boot
    -Change UEFI CSM support
    -Save

On reboot, I get not Toshiba logo, but a black screen with:

«This product is covered by one or more of the following patents:...» (list of patents...)

    Realtek...

PXE - E61: Media test faliure check cable
PXE - MOF: Exit PXE ROM
"No boot device - insert boot and press a key.

I can't open the Bios again at F2.

    Which I recover the system?

    Hello

The unit has been pre-installed with Win 8 64 bit right?

Change BIOS setting of UEFI to CSM and disabling secure boot prevent Notepad to start 8 to win!

That's why the device cannot find the boot device and passes to the last option: LAN.
But given that the laptop can not find bootable system via LAN, the error PXE - E61: Media test faliure check cable appears.

If you want to use a dual boot, you will need to boot into Win 8
Win 8 you must create a partition for installing Linux. This can be down in Win 8 disk management. It must reduce a last partition and have to create new free space available.

Now to start installing Linux you need support... you can burn the iso on DVD or a USB bootable Linux. There are a lot of details on the internet how to create these media.
Once you have created the bootable USB key, restart your PC with USB connected.
Press F12 for the boot menu. Now you should see the key USB (if it is bootable!) choose USB and you should be able to install Linux (Ubuntu is great!)

Here's a nice page that would provide the statement all step by step!

  • Re: Tecra S11 - Dual boot Windows 7 and XP

I installed Windows 7 (from the hidden to the hardrive recovery section) on my new Tecra S11. I would like to know if I can use the Windows XP
recovery media provided by Toshiba to create a dual boot Windows 7/Windows XP rather than go back to XP?

    Hi dualboot.

As far as I know it of not possible to create a dual boot with XP and Windows 7 Toshiba Recovery disk. The problem is that the recovery disk erases the entire HARD disk, so there is no option to create a dual boot with another operating system.

If you want XP too you need to a normal XP installation disk Microsoft or you use virtualization of Windows 7 XP mode, if some n t applications run on Windows 7. ;)

I only know of the VHD, 7 has a "virtual machine" option or is a long process that requires a third-party software?

Not longer than the partitioning of the HARD drive and install XP - actually quite a bit more fast I should think and gives you the ability to move from one OS to the other without having to reboot the machine. • Can I dual boot Win7 32 and Win7 64-bit by using the same product key?

    Hello

My desktop PC is dual boot with XP and Win 7 Pro 32-bit. Both are retail box versions.

I would replace the partition with Win 7 Pro 64-bit XP. (That I still keep installing Win 7 32 bit legacy hardware that does not work under a compatibility mode).

Can I install and activate the new 64-bit partition by using the same product key, or is that 32-bit installation fail/break?

    Thanks for any advice.

No, the key that can be used with 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 is exclusively for use with the disc 1. You cannot use install both. 1 license, 1 installation, so choose wisely. If you want to install Windows 7 32 or 64 bit on another partition or another computer, you must purchase an additional license.

If you comply with these license terms, you have the rights below for each license you acquire.

    1 OVERVIEW.

    a. software. The software includes operating system software. This software does not include Windows Live services. Windows

Live is a service available from Microsoft under a separate agreement.

    b. license model. The software is licensed on a basic computer copy. A computer is a physical hardware system with internal storage capable of running the software. A hardware partition or blade is considered be a separate computer.

    2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.

    a. one copy per computer. You can install one copy of the software on a single computer. This computer is "licensed computer.

    b. a computer license. You can use the software on up to two processors of the computer under license at some point. Except as provided in these license terms, you cannot use the software on any other computer.

    c. number of users. Except as provided in these license terms, only one user may use the software at a time.

    d. other Versions. The software may include several versions, such as 32-bit and 64-bit. You may install and use only one version at a time.

Where can I still get Windows 7?

Because Windows 7 is in limited stock because Microsoft ended sales in October 2013, this created demand due to its rarity. This means the retail boxed copies request a bonus, while the OEM System Builder copies remain affordable.

    Full version (retail):

-Includes the rights of transfer to another computer.

-Does not require a qualifying earlier version of Windows.

    -Expensive

    Upgrade version (detail):

-Includes the rights of transfer to another computer.

-require a qualifying earlier version of Windows.

-Expensive, but less expensive full version

    OEM System Builder version:

The OEM of Windows 7 versions are identical to the versions commercial full license with the following exception:

-OEM versions don't offer any free direct support from Microsoft technical support Microsoft

-OEM Licenses are tied to the computer first you install and activate it on

-OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

-OEM versions does not move directly from an older Windows operating system

There is nothing wrong to use it too, especially that all future versions of Windows will be full versions.

Well, you can use your current license and install a program from the virtual machine and install your Linux distribution you want in the program of the virtual machine with Windows 7.

You will however need to a Windows 7 full version license.

  • Can I run dual boot Vista 32 and Windows 7 64? Can I use a upgrade disk to install the full version?

original title: I have a simple question...

I have Vista 32 bit.  I have two hard drives.  Vista 32 is on disk 0.  (C) I want to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit.  I want to change the installation path on Windows 7 64 bit edition updated the software on my second drive, so I can run a system dual boot.  Windows 7 Setup will allow me to do?  I can use the version upgrade of the software for that, or do I have the full version?

    Hello

You can't do what you want to do

32-bit to 64-bit is NOT a upgrade path if you have always wanted to upgrade 32 bit vista

It must be done with a clean install with a final certificate

and you need a full license of windows 7 to install windows 7 on the 2nd hard drive

You can dual boot vista 32-bit and 64-bit windows 7, if the manufacturer of your computer provides windows 7 drivers

  • How much better the partition of the HARD drive for dual boot: Windows 8 and Linux

    Hello

I am a newbie in Windows 8, linux, Partition...

I want to use my new laptop with windows 8 pre-installed on the following:

Create a Dual Boot Windows 8 / Ubuntu
Create on my drive C (single disk on my laptop):

    * a partition for the system
    * one for Windows 8
    * one for data and
    least for Ubuntu OS

    My goal is:

-to install VmWare on Windows 8 and run Splat Checkpoint with virtual machines to make the FCTC laboratories.

to install GNS3 on Ubuntu for CCNP Labs but with GNS3 to access the files in the data partition

I have a Toshiba Satellite with 750 GB and 8 GB of RAM.

According to you, what is the best size for my scores?
Is there a better way to partition my C drive on my goal?

    Best regards

I don't know if this is the right section, sorry for that. Feel free to move this thread in the appropriate section *.

I think the size of partitions depends of the you want to use and install other software.
So if you have a lot of software which runs under the Windows System I recommend to choose a larger size to win 8 partition.

However, given that you have a 750 GB HARD drive, you could take 200GB for Win 8, 100 GB to Linux and the rest of the HARD drive size, that you can use for data.

  • Tecra A11 (PTSE1A - 00L 005) - Dual boot with XP and Windows 7

Just bought a new Tecra A11 computer laptop running WIN7 Pro. Then downloaded and installΘ_ * virtual XP Pro * _ but not happy with the results that a lot of things he can do my other dual boot 17 "computer laptop with Vista/XP Pro will do.

    Background
There are 3 partitions on the HARD disk
    1. active primary recovery 1.46 GB (without drive letter)
    2. principal asset C: start 287 Gb
3 primary Partition 9.2 GB (no drive letter, the unknown application)

When I tried to install Xp Pro on another machine current Win7 partitioned as shown above, it 'blue preset' at the point of loading Xp using the RAID SATA CH8M-E charge via my USB FDD controller. Is it because this SATA driver is not current?

What is the correct SATA driver?

Does anyone know for sure that this machine will operate in dual boot Win7/Xp Pro?

    Any help much appreciated

    Peter

Yes, you can dual-boot two versions of Windows.

    What you do is:

Create recovery discs just in case something happens.
Retractable C: drive at half the size.
Create a new partition NTFS for XP.
Download the driver for the controller SATA F6 www.intel.com
Copy the SATA drivers on a floppy disk
Boot from your XP (must have SP2 or SP3 slipstreamed) disc, press F6 when you are prompted to use the SATA driver on the floppy drive (to avoid the BSOD 0x0000007B)
Configure the installation of XP to install on the partition that you created.

When you restart, XP may have taken over and ignore Win7.
In this case, you can restore the Win7 boot loader using EasyBCD (google is your friend)

If the BIOS has an option of SATA controller Mode, simply activate the IDE Mode instead of the SATA driver.
