Dummy data (txt file) in a virtual machine (ESxi, vCenter 5.1 5.1)

I created a dummy text file by using the command fsutil file createnew test.txt 1000000000 in my Windows VM, with prov space 500 GB. After I run this command, I do not see that the virtual machine has filled with 485 GB of data. But in vCenter space used is still the Prov. as 20 GB space that is taken by the guest operating system. No idea why its not reflected with the VMDK. Checked the datatstore (in navigating the VMDK) is not reflcted. Has also had the same problem with LInux VM. It was conducted to make a larger VM to run some tests. Any response is appreciated.

Thank you.

The createnew option you use "Creates a file name and size, with content that is composed of zeros."

With a thin virtual disk put in service, blocks of data but which are composed of binary zeros are not actually allocated, only a NULL pointer is created which - if the data are read re - returns binary zeros again. If you want to allocate disk space on the data store (i.e. cultivating the hard file) you need to write values non-null. For Linux, you can for example use the shred command.

  • Is it necessary that the guest OS to support SSD if the file of the virtual machine is placed on an SSD?

    Dear,

    I have a plan to set up a file of the virtual machine on an SSD. The host system is windows 10 (on an other SSD, I'll use 2 SSD), it should support the SSD very well.  Then comes the question: should I also install an OS that needs support also guest SSD?

    My opinion is it does not matter since the disk i/o operation is made by host operating system, it is the host operating system which finally determin whick block data will be published (optimization of the disk).

    Am I wrong? Thank you.

    Sorry for the enigmatic answer...

    In your case, the answer is Yes: he cares about the type of media, while the virtual disk is a vmdk (virtual material treaty) and placed in an SSD.

    There are a few cases where you might use a physical disk directly to the virtual machine (called peripheral raw disk or RDM in vSphere environment).

  • Copying a file to a virtual machine

    Hello

    I have a script which customizes the VMS in a .csv file (attached).

    The logic is as follows:

    Change memory,

    change vcpus,

    edit notes,

    change the name of the network (VLAN),

    network settings,

    Set the static IP address,

    Set the hard disk size,

    and finally:

    extend your hard drive.

    I use the invoke-script command to extend the drive after it has been expanded through VMware.  To do this, I use the following syntax:

    xcopy $installdir\extddisk.txt \\$target\c$temp\/f

    invoke VMscript VM - $VM.name - ScriptText "diskpart /S c:\temp\extdisk.txt" - Hostuser $HostUser - HostPassword $HostPass - GuestUser - GuestUser - GuestPassword $GuestPass

    The problem is that, since the disc is developing as a last step.  If the virtual machine is being to be deployed to a VIRTUAL LAN that is not accessible (for example a LAN VIRTUAL DMZ) so I won't be able to copy the extdisk.txt file that depends on the diskpart command.  Is there another way I can transfer this file to the virtual machine directly?

    The content of the file is extremely simple, it is said:

    Rescan

    Select volume 2

    extend

    Since the file is so simple can I I could even just create it on the server before you delete the command has run successfully?

    You can use the Copy-VMGuestFile cmdlet to copy the file.

    If Invoke-VMScript works, that should work as well, it uses the same concept and VMware tools.

  • Script to change the name of the file to the virtual machine and its associated files

    Hello

    I'm looking for a script to change the name of the virtual machine in virtual center and also change it has associated file names in the data store to match file name of virtual machine. But the vmdk file will contain a descriptor which maps the - flat.vmdk file. So not sure that we can achieve this through a script.

    Thanks in advance!

    Not really as much as I know.

    The advantage of the svMotion is renamed it the files (.) VMX, VMDK,...) For you.

    The only alternative would be the command line. See Duncan Howto: renaming a virtual computer.

    With the help of the plink.exe tool which could possibly be scripted.

  • Recovering files on a virtual machine that is inaccessible

    .

    Hi all

    My vm is deceased and I need help, recover, or at least the files it contains. I think I might of a lack of space because I have tried to delete some files and copied them accidentally, causing its gel and get this tint gray on the window. I then tried to shut it down and it would not, so I went into the Task Manager and killed the process, and now when I try to open it, it gives me "generic error". Is there a way I can recover the files on this virtual machine?

    eodnhoj wrote:

    Is this a problem?

    It is of course!

    You need you have extra space for other things like the .vmem file which is the size of the RAM that is assigned to the Virtual Machine and this isn't the only thing that you need extra space for the.

    Anyway you should make a copy of the virtual machine on a different drive having a more adequate space then and try to execute it or attempt to recover data from the user.

    You can edit vmx files on multiple virtual machines in a cluster to allow changes of setting delay start via RCLI or Toolkit VI? How?

    SAs desire a lead time of 10 seconds through the virtual company composed of several VCs with multiple data centers and clusters.

    Known: we can edit the .vmx file and add: bios.bootDelay = "10000" this adds stunted ms 10000 (10 seconds) when starting

    Known: we may have to re-register or some other mechanism to apply the changes to the start on the VMS settings

    Has anyone tried to make a change of large company to bootDelay on VMS? Any help?

  • Not able to add the snapshot file to the virtual machine

    We have Win 2003 virtual machine running on ESXi 4.0.0 261974. The virtual machine has two vmdk files. We had taken the snapshot a few days back and today by mistake, we have removed one of the vmdk (DB - srv - 000001.vmdk - snapshot file). Now, we are not able to add the snapshot file to the virtual machine. When tried to add the existing vmdk, it displays only the source disk (DB - srv.vmdk). Please, help us to solve this problem.

    The GUI allows only adding the base vmdk. To add the Flash disk, you must manually change the vmx file. Registrations for the formerly removed virtual disk could still exist in the vmx file with... .present = "FALSE". After changing the vmx file you must reload the configuration. To do this, remove the VM of the inventory and add it back again (right-click on the vmx file).

  • Deleting the same files of many virtual machines remotely

    Hi all

    I tried to delete the same file several virtual machines remotely using the following script PowerCLI:

    $a = Get - VM | %{

    foreach ($nic as $_.) Guest.Nics) {}
    Write-output $nic. IPAddress
    }
    }
    foreach ($i in $a)
    {$b = get-WmiOBJECT-query "SELECT * from CIM_DataFile where Name='C:\\test\\deleteme.exe'"-computername $i}
    $b.delete)

    }

    It works perfectly when I run the script on the host virtual machines while I am running the script PowerCLI. When I Connect-viserver to another host however and try to run the script, I get the dreaded "RPC server is unavailable error (HRESULT: 0x800706BA)" for Get-WmiObject.  Virtual machines don't have Windows Firewall and have all TCP/IP, RPC and WMI services started, so who could eliminate any possibility.

    I am also able to run other scripts that use the Get-wmiobject across all virtual machines such as scripts to change the DNS or Netbios name across many machines on different hosts.

    Any comments would be greatly appreciated and please feel free to comment if you know maybe other ways which can delete files on multiple virtual machines in any other way.  Installation PowerCLI to run the script locally on each host would be a laborious process to do.

    Thank you very much!

    Best regards

    To solve the problem with the quotes, you can use double quotes inside the string. Like this:

    «del "«c:\documents and settings\text.exe»»»

    Or you can use for the string single quotes and double quotes inside:

    "del"c:\documents and settings\text.exe"

    If you are using a virtual network and it does not fill to the physical network... which makes it rather difficult.

    1. you can make an ISO image and load that the Media Lab Manager Store.

    2. connect virtual and physical memory, then use CIFS/Samba or other desired method.

    There is not much else.

  • Path to the file on the virtual machine

    Hi people

    I am aware of VMRUN and would use call programs on the virtual computer and move files between the host and the guest.  I don't know exactly what it does good, nor how these virtual machines are actually structured, so I would like someone to clarify for me if it is even possible to have a host path to a file on the client VM.

    For example, I use scripts from my Mac that do a lot of editing on the side of the virtual Windows machine - is there is a way, I can use to refer to and modify a file on the virtual machine without using VMRUN.

    Thank you very much!

    Mirroing is a little difficult, I don't think that anything that is either duplicated with shared folders.  What happens is the Windows to the Documents, music, path is set to a UNC path (vmware-host\), which is served by the VMware HGFS file system, a mechanism for sharing private with OS X.  In OS X, just the files live in any directory is shared.  But that's what you say, a place with several shared paths.

    For SMB sharing, sharing so once mounted on your Mac, OS X uses a SMB client to Yes go on the network to access files in your guest VM files standard Windows.  All traffic is host only, unless the virtual machine is filled and you use the Wifi connection, in which case the traffic can "bounce" the point of wireless as a jump.  There are ways to optimize the network path, so all traffic is strictly host only.

    I have not benchmarked HGFS v. SMB, but there is a "tax" anyway compared to the opening of the VM file on its file system local.  For your use case, it is probably useful to check the two options.
