  I was unable to get update KB967723 to install on a laptop Vista Basic 32 bit running, having for result error code 80070057.

  I think that this error has something to do with the Windows updates blocking antivirus.

  Try this:

  (1) disable the anti-virus and all others no essential programs

  (2) type in services.msc RUN which will take you to the 'services' and search for Windows Installer mine has been set to manual so leave it put there and just start it

  (3) now, run windows update and wait for your window installed correctly

  (4) restart the computer

  To resolve this problem, you must clear the existing proxy settings by performing the following steps:

  1. open the start menu, select run, type cmd and press ENTER.
  2. to display the current, proxy settings, at the command prompt, type Proxycfg.exe, and then press ENTER to run the command.

  4. Finally, ensure that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running on the computer by following these steps:
