  Seem to have found the problem.  Windows 7 (64), PS CS5 extended.  Turns out Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw version 6.7.0.339 was already installed.  Guess 6.6 update is not enough smart to bail or alert when a later version is installed.

  Also, it turns out that Adobe Camera Raw 6.7 is the last update for Photoshop CS5.

  If you use After Effects CS5.5, the latest version is 10.5.1. See the next page. As this page says this update is not available through help > updates. This update fixes two bugs. It is not a critical update, unless you need it for these two bugs. None of them are accidents, so this will not help with accidents that you quote.

  The reason why you got an error, is that you tried to install a (10.0.1) update for After Effects CS5, not After Effects CS5.5.
