  • Windows Update updates & any error message

I have Windows Vista Home premium and I can not install updates.  The "install updates" icon in the status bar, and when I click it, it says that I need to check the updates on my computer (currently set to download and let me choose what to install).  When I click on "check for updates" it takes a few minutes and tell me I need to 'install new windows update software", if I click to do this, so I'm back to square 1, 'install updates' and the circle continues.  Problem is that no error message is given, I'm just stuck in a loop.  Occasionally, when I restart the computer, it will show the updates there and I can install them a few at a time (usually takes some time, because they will refresh not fully without me reboot (not where it tells you normally ' computer must be restarted to complete the update)... which means it shows 'download and install' forever) then I reboot, and it's all better (for now!)  I searched everysite I can find, but all seem to correct an error #, not only the loop blocked without an error message.

    Hello Ohanaof3,

Thank you for using Microsoft Vista answers Forum!

This problem may be caused by a temporary folder of Windows Update corrupted or third programs blocking access to the Windows Update site.

Also, look for a spyware infection or software viruses malware on your PC.

In addition, the issue could also be as a result of some of these conditions listed below

    ·         Log file or database corruption exists in the folder % Systemroot%\System32\Catroot2.

    ·         Cryptographic services is set to disabled.

    ·         Other Windows files are corrupted or missing.

    ·         The timestamp signature or the certificate cannot be verified, or is incorrect.

For more information on how to fix this error, I suggest you follow the steps in the link below. Different methods are available, use only one at a time. Once your problem is solved, you don't have to go through other methods

You have a Windows XP CD?  You need start the recovery console to resolve this problem, or you will need to mount the drive in another computer.  If you do not have a Windows XP cd, you can download an .iso file on the net Recovery Console a burn to a cd.

Start the recovery console, run chkdsk /r on the drive and see if that fixes things.  If the computer still shows the same error after running chkdsk then see here:

  • Windows Mail JPG attachments get the error message "cannot find... .jpg file.

Recently, I try to open JPG files in Windows Mail and get an error message window that says that "Windows cannot find"filename.jpg"make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again" I can save the JPG file, then open it, but Windows Mail won't open it by simply clicking on the attachment JPG.

There has been reports of this behavior with only some files (.jpg or .pdf) and the reports of this problem with each attachment after installing IE8.  Frankly, they are quite few and inconsistent and avisnon there is no clear solution.  Try these two steps in this order.

    1. Use this utility to 'fix' to reset the Security http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/949220 settings
    2. Use this utility to re - register a lot of IE http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=35&id=133&artlang=en important .dll

There are other actions that must be reported to temporarily fix the problem - move to the location of the internet temportary file, for example.  Another reported a little is to uninstall IE8 and then reinstall it with all the temporarily disabled third-party security software.

Since you have only this problem with .jpg files, you can try to reset file associations for .jpg.  Open an administrator command prompt (right click on cmd in the start menu and choose "Run as Administrator").  In the administration command prompt window, type the following lines exactly as shown:
    Assoc .jpg = jpegfile

    Assoc .jpeg = jpegfile

    ftype jpegfile=%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Photo Gallery\PhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen %1

  • Quarantine Trojan leads to error messages 'Bad Image'

Norton Security Suite recently detected and quarantined the Trojan horse of following my Windows 7 laptop:

    C:\ProgramData\{9A88E103-A20A-4EA5-8636-C73B709A5BF8}\ListSvc.dll

Since then, Windows was display the following warnings:

    SynTPEnh.exe - bad Image
C:\ProgramData\{9A88E103-A20A-4EA5-8636-C73B709A5BF8}\ListSvc.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try to install the program by using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the provider of software for support.

Different executables were proof this caveat, including: SynTPEnh.exe, Notepad, exe, pcdrcui.exe and pcdrsysinfosoftware.p5x.

Apparently ListSvc.dll is a valid program that runs at startup. The registry contains the following information:

    Value name:
    @%SystemRoot%\System32\ListSvc.dll,-101

    Value data:
Amendments to local computer associated with the configuration and maintenance of the computer attached to a homegroup. If this service is stopped or disabled, your computer will not properly work in a homegroup, and your homegroup might not work correctly. It is recommended to keep this service running.

I have no idea where Norton quarantined ListSvc.dll, but other copies exist on the hard drive of my laptop. However, the system seems to point to the Trojan horse for some reason any.

I've seen all sorts of complex responses to similar errors. What can I do on this will not be my laptop or me out of service for the next six months?

Amit, I found myself to fix this problem myself as follows.

I noticed that the history of Norton Security showed that download Insight analyzed C:\ProgramData\{9A88E103-A20A-4EA5-8636-C73B709A5BF8}\ListSvc.dll 25/12/2014 and feel "good."

Then I open characteristics and control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and found that I had installed the following to this date:

    • Realtek Ethernet Controller Driver for Windows 7
    • WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software

I have it installed via the device, no any website downloads Manager.

I also searched my hard drive for files modified on that date and found a BUNCH of files related to NVIDIA in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\NVIDIA\NvBackend games.

I had some problems with NVIDIA drivers and reinstalled them a few days later.

Then, I compared my laptop (where the problem exists) with my work laptop. I searched the records on two laptops and has identified the following:

    • Register my work laptop constantly stressed % SystemRoot%\System32\ListSvc.dll.
    • Most of the relevant entries in the register of my personal laptop is % SystemRoot%\System32\ListSvc.dll, but some of them has C:\ProgramData\{9A88E103-A20A-4EA5-8636-C73B709A5BF8}\ListSvc.dll.

I have no way of knowing if everything I installed on 25/12/2014 also installed C:\ProgramData\{9A88E103-A20A-4EA5-8636-C73B709A5BF8}\ListSvc.dll and modified the registry to point here.

I have no idea why Norton was an alarm until 02/03/2015.

However, I edited the registry entries that are suspicious to point to %SystemRoot%\System32\ListSvc.dll and rebooted.

So far, so good, no error message popping up.

How about re-reading everything cela and ask what is efficiency you were slapping a thought ill, boilerplate answer on me?
