ESX 3.0.1 upgrade to 3.5

Looking for the best method to upgrade the two ESX 3.0.1 server 3.5 U4.  We use virtual center or vmotion.  I read the upgrade Guild but has not seen a method of upgrading to a configuration of ESX servers using a SAN without Virtual Center.  What I read on this forum, it seems that my steps should be as follows.

  1. Backup *.vmdk files

  2. ESX server using boot iso image and choose to upgrade.

Is it really that simple?

Thanks for your help.

Back up your data before an upgrade is never a bad idea.  However, the upgrade from 3.0.1 to 3.5 should not do something for data warehouses.  It is pretty simple - just stop the virtual machines and initiate the CD 3.5 and choose to upgrade.  Then, you will need to upgrade VMware Tools on your virtual machines.

    (1) check if your hardware supported vSphere 4.1

    (2) suggest upgrade to ESXi instead of ESX

    (3) make sure that you update your vCenter server first and vCetner 4.1 will run only x 64-bit Windows systems

    (4) for the stand-alone version you have separated RAID for ESX and store data if so you can just format the drive on which ESX is installed

    (5) for the site with SAN storage disconnect from host to storage and re - join

Make sure that the upgrade guide is reviewed

  • ESX 4 command line upgrade to ESX 4.1

I'm upgrading to ESX 4.0 server.  It has only local storage and there are Virtual Machines on the local data store.  If I use the pre-upgrade beam and upgrad by using the command line upgrade removes the virtual machines on it re formatting of VMFS volume?

Unless you encounter unexpected problems the VMFS datastore should be preserved (otherwise it wouldn't be an upgrade). However, it is recommended to have a current backup before the upgrade in case of disaster.

Please make sure that you take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1022140 and the Upgrade Guide (you can find the link in the KB article) before you run the upgrade. Also, make sure that you meet the prerequisites, for example host supported and firmware, enough disk space hardware on / Boot and / root...

  • Update the host ESX 4.1 before upgrading vCenter 4.0 to 4.1

Someone sees a problem updating my 4.1 ESX hosts and leaving in the former vCenter 4 Update 1 cluster?  I have rebuilt a new server vCenter 4.1 but can't stop the virtual machines and ESX hosts in maintenance until tomorrow night mode.  I want to put the ESX host in maintenance mode, both in the old server vCenter and 4.1 update and move remove/add new vCenter tomorrow night.

You can't manage a host ESXi4.1 with nothing less than vCenter4.1.  If your plan will not work.  You must first upgrade vCenter.

  • Existing licenses for esx 3.5 after upgrading vsphere vc

    Hi all

I start to think to upgrade our infrastructure to vsphere, but I'm not not clear about the licensing. If I update our vc2.5 to vsphere, I understand that there is not real server as all its treaties by vsphere license, so what happens in esx 3.5 boxes after the vc upgrade.

They drop mode 14 days as they would if they lose the connection to the license server, or server licenses always runs parallel to the authorization of vc and I just uninstall the license server when all hosts have been upgraded?

    Concerning

    Dale

ESX 3.5 can still be managed by Virtual Center 4. Once you upgrade the ESX 3.5 servers to VSphere (ESX4), you will see that the licenses for the 3.5 servers are still there until the license server is still in existence.  As long as you have ESX 3.5 servers - even if they are managed by VC 4 you need the license server.  Until all 3.5 servers are upgraded to VSphere, you can not get rid of the license server.

If you find this information useful or appropriate, please consider giving points.

  • ESXi 4 ESX 4 Update 1 upgrade

    Hello

I have here a typical situation. We rotated 2 standalone ESXi 4 with VM and templates stored in the local data warehouses. We finally decided to upgrade to ESX 4 update 1 to be able to use the service console to use most of the features of the CLI.

The ESXi 4 has 2 data warehouses locally that contains templates of a store of data and the virtual computer on the other. It is important for us to have the operation of the virtual machine. We do not have a shared storage.

We have obtained the licenses now and want to spend ESXi ESX 4update 4 1. Is this possible? If so, how and if not, what would be the alternatives?

All entries would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

There is no option to migrate since ESXi 4 to ESX 4.

It should not cause problems just make sure that when you get to the portion of the authorization upgrade disk select vmfs partiitions - and for the guide, you want to check the minor upgrade sections.

  • ESX 4 confussion upgrade

    Hello all;

Well as the title says, I'm really confused.

I got vCenter 5.1 for 3 guests.  1 host has been implemented with VMware ESX4.1, build the 1363503.  I'm finally upgrading of the host, but I do research & find contradictory stories then maybe someone can help?

On a different topic about DCUI, another Member pointed out that you can not upgrade, it had to be a new facility that is NOT an option because the guests are sharepoint, sql, web servers, etc..

You can connect to the Service Console but keep in mind there is no way to do an in place upgrade from ESX to ESXi -either 4 or 5 - it has to be a fresh install -

But if I google the topic, I find several results with:

Anyone can shed some light on this discussion?  I can't afford to lose all the guests for a new installation is not an option but I need to upgrade to 5.1.

    Thanks in advance!

    Supported on ESXi 5.5 upgrades

You can upgrade an ESXi 5.0.x and 5.1.x host directly ESXi ESXi 5.5 and in most cases, you can migrate a

ESX 4.x or upgrade an ESXi 4.x host directly to ESXi 5.5.

The details and the level of support for an upgrade or migration to version 4.x, ESX and ESXi hosts and

version 5.0.x and 5.1.x ESXi hosts to ESXi 5.5 depend on the host to be upgraded and the upgrade method

    you are using.

  • Upgrading ESX 3.5 update 4 to update 5

That I improve my ESX 3.5 update 4 update 5 hosts. You advise me to do a new installation or by selecting the upgrade option? When I choose the new facility, he told me that the following non-vmfs partitions will be removed. I choose OK for that? I have already disconnected the fiber cables going to the ESX host I'm upgrading. In addition, the upgrade to ESX 4 or 5 is not an option at this point.

If going 3.5 U4 U5, in my opinion, I'd go with just an upgrade, not a new build.

Can migrate us from ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 via the Update Manager?

No, there is no way to upgrade ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1. However. According to the vSphere 5 Upgrade Guide (see http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-pubs.html) an ESX/ESXi 4.x upgrade to ESXi 5.0 is supported (as long as 4.x installation is not an upgrade from 3.x)

I am trying to upgrade my servers ESX 4.0 to 4.1, but I'm running into an error.

    I did the following:

    (1) download the update1a package and copied to the ESX host in the /upgrades folder

    (2) put the host in Maintenance Mode

    (3) connected to the host via putty

Navigated 4) in the folder with the copied update

    (5) run the following commands: esxupdate - stage ESX410 - 201010001.zip bundle

    (6) restarted ESX host, again executes the command, still the same error.

    Thank you

    Smurfette

The package you have there are a lot of patches for ESX 4.1, you are currently on the 4.0.

You will need to upload the complete bundle of upgrade to 4.1 from the download site instead of the one you have.

    http://downloads.VMware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_vsphere_4/4_0

If you're upgrading from the command line, there is a bundle of pre-upgrade you will have to install first of all, when you use the Update Manager is not necessary.

When this is done, you can apply the patches of 4.1.

You are mixing patches and upgrades.
