ESX 3.5 U5 Virtual Machine memory usage

Hello

I have a question about memory consumption I see on my ESX 3.5U5 hosts. I googled around and discover how ESX deals with management of memory... but I'm not sure that I put all the pieces together correctly in my brain. I hope you guys can help clarify this for me.

I have a few guests but will use one as an example:

This host has 64 GB of physical memory. There are a number of virtual machines residing on this host and the total amount of memory that I attributed to them is 40 GB. In VirtualCenter, I see on the Summary tab is 21,65/64 GB global memory on the host use and this is due to the fact that not all of the virtual machine are fully utilized.

Now more confusing part... I've attached a picture that contains screenshots of what I'm about to discuss...

  • In the tab control performance, the host indicates the high memory limit (100%) as being ~ 40 GB. I guess that's because I assigned only this amount of memory. Is it a correct assumption?

  • Why the configuration tab memory doesn't display that Virtual Machines use all 60 GB of memory available? I am not mistaken in assuming this is due to the fact that the host use and wrote to all parts of the physical memory as time passes (for overcommiting and balloon?) I expect this number to reflect either the current amount of memory of memory allocated to each virtual machine or memory present consumption.

Any idea is appreciated.

Hello

Instead of directly answering your questions, I will explain what each image represents. This will explain I hope that what you're seeing and why.

-At the top image, what it says is correct - this is memory that has been consumed by the virtual machines and may be less than what is given to them.

-L' the Middle image is to show you the total physical memory that is available for the use of virtual machines after that things like the service console and general system has been deleted. Not what is used or has left, but what total physical memory can be used.

-In regards to the third graph your hypothesis is correct. It is the memory allocated to the VM. This is different from consumed which is the actual physical memory, use virtual machines.

After reading my answer I'm not sure I have made better or worse? Let me know if further details are required.

Kind regards

Glen

  • Required physical server Vs Virtual Machine memory

    Is there a white paper explains why we we need less memory in the Virtual Machine as compared to the physical Machine.

    The problem is that my boss wants to know why this is so. It is very difficult for me to explain this to him, he wants to see a white paper OR some article on the internet.

    As long as a VM administrator, I know that we can add and remove a virtual computer memory but it will be not that simple when it comes to physical servers. I suggested to him that we must follow a standard, and if there is a requirement for business we can increase or decrease is according to the needs. So when the salesman comes in they give us specifications for the physical server and not the virtual and there is always an argument that why should have 6-8 GB memory VM from the outset. In order to avoid everything that the arguments it needs more proof.

    Thank you

    Here is a simple explanation of why VM need less memory.  Transparent page sharing.

    If you install a virtual of Windows 2008 SP2 single server machine, lets assume that it uses 500 MB of RAM while sitting idle.  It's basically all running components loaded into memory.

    If you then put a same VM, the new machine virtual don't re-charge not the exact same components in memory.  ESX will see the same exact memory block has been loaded into the memory of the host Server1 (phyiscal material) and then simply point the virtual machine to the component already loaded into memory.

    After the virtual machine has been loaded and GST has kicked, you will probably find that for 2 identical virtual machines you use not only 650MB of memory (not 1000 as expected).  This is because 80% of the components has need of the new virtual machine, it only uses the existing memory blocks, instead of duplicating.

    Now, repeat this operation on 10 VM and assume only 50% of the memory is the same between them... it is still a huge economy of memory.  In this case, since each VM Windows is really loading only 250 MB of itself in memory and split the rest, technically you don't need to allocate 2 GB of RAM for each virtual computer... you can easily get away with putting 1 to 1.5 GB on this server and I have always the same ratio of available memory for the programs that you would do if it was a physical server.

  • ESX host has a virtual machine that must be behind a physical firewall

    We have several hosts of ESXi.  Some are standard ver3.5, while others are standard ver4.1.  All guests of stand alone.

    A host ESX ver3.5 has 6 virtual computers assigned to the network port of the single on a vSwitch stand-alone virtual computer group.   This switch has 3 uplinks.

    One of the virtual machines must place the physical while the rest remains in front of the firewall as well as the ESX host firewall.   I am told that this can be done by assigning one of of the uplinks to a subnet that is behind the firewall.  And this is the best way to manage it.   My question is: is it possible?   My experience limited with physical firewall and what knowledge I have of VI3, we would need to create a separate vSwitch to do this and assign the VM to these switches... and that's if the uplink can be assigned to a physical switch that connects to another switch behind the firewall (I think).

    Something doesn't seem quite in here... I'm not sure it will work.

    Sounds good to me. If it is a separate physical switch to connect, then you will need an additional vSwitch. If it's just a separate VLAN you could - depending on your current configuration (VST) - just create a new port with the appropriate VLAN ID configured Group.

  • ESX host for a virtual machine specific?

    An ESX (out of 3) host in a cluster has a physique more NIC

    We would like to place a special virtual machine on the ESX host.  Is it possible to attribute this VM to this particular host?  Needless to say, if there is a failure and that the VM is propelled upward on another ESX host, we will migrate it back manually.

    Your opinion is requested.

    Thank you

    With vSphere 4.1, you have host affinity.

    Otherwise, there's another thing, as to connect to a local iso file...

    But something can vMotion broken and/or HA.

  • ESX ESX and 64-bit virtual machines

    Hello

    For a specific need, I virtualize ESX in ESX. It's something that I did before without a problem.

    Today, I need to run a VM for 64 bit inside the virtual ESX (which runs on a physical ESX that you understood).

    When I start the 64-bit VM, I get the following message:

    Host CPU is not compatible with the virtual machine requires at level 0 x 80000001 CPUID register "edx".

    * Longmode; required when a virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest OS
    For systems with Intel processors, which allows to VT in the BIOS is required to support longmode.

    Does anyone know how to enable VT on the VM to ESX from ESX VM BIOS is really basic, I can't find any option?

    Thank you

    Nested ESX/ESXi hosts cannot run 32-bit VM... It is one of the limits very known execution of a nested host. Basically, the physical host is passing information to the virtual host that cannot transmit it (again) to the virtual machine running inside the nested host. You can send the info so far.

  • Unistalling ESXi & install ESX, what of my virtual machines?

    Hi all

    I think unistalling vSphereHypervisor (ESXi 4.1) and installing vsphere (ESX 4.1) on my home server.

    How to preserve my 8 VMs or backup them?

    In addition, I will win by opting for ESX 4.1?

    At this point, the difference between 4.1 ESX and ESXi 4.1 shrinks, for what you can do through administrative tasks. Get the unit of MAS, and you have more features. With the new ability to remote SSH on ESXi 4.1, you win a lot of what ESX 4.x used to bring to the table (by itself without the need to modify a file of confd ESXi 4)...

    So unless you have tools/software that works only in ESX 4.1, I wouldn't wipe and install ESX 4.1... Firstly, you'll need to do the reverse, when you want to go to the next version. On the other hand, most third party tools have been updated to ESXi 4.1, are being updated, or will be before too long. At least those who actually want to keep their customers running VMware products.

    I moved my VM to a SAN/NAS in my lab at home. It is very handy when I want to update the host, since I can have run them on a temporary host (a good system, using ESXi 4.1 installed on a USB key). Finally, I have at least two hosts in my lab running 24 x 7 so that I can more easily update things. In addition, it will allow me to run several virtual machines at the same time.

  • Alert - the virtual machine CPU usage

    A virtual computer that is running Windows 2000 reports almost every day an alert on "use of the processor of the virtual machine.

    According to my knowledge, add a CPU to a Windows 2000 Server is not easy as with recent versions of Windows, is correct?

    The 5.0 ESXi host is not CPU ovrloaded, so I don't think that adding a CPU reservation can change anything...

    So, what is the best way to solve the problem with the minimum impact on the VM guwest?

  • config of memory in esxi with a hyper-v virtual machine on.

    First of all, Thanks for the help.

    I set up a Home Lab with ESXi 5.1.
    J’ai several Linux machines. J’ai a virtual machine Windows Server 2012 Hyper -v.
    I would like to know what the optimal parameters in order to maximize the 32 GB of RAM to the virtual machine Windows. ()when I use this machine do not use any other ESXi virtual machine)
    J’ai not clear that if administered dynamically memory for this VM in ESXi when you manage Hyper v, dynamic Management of memory will be use all the RAM.

    Thank you for everything, I hope that I have explained.

    How much memory is your ESXi has? If you have not set up a special configuration for the virtual Windows machine, the ESXi Server uses the common techniques of overcommitment with the virtual machine. If you have more than 32 GB of RAM on your box of ESXi, you'll never overcommited (assuming that your other virtual machines are turned off). So the ESXi will give access to the physical to your Windows virtual machine memory as long as she asks for.

    You can also ensure the physical to the virtual machine by using reservations memory, if you want to.

  • ESX as a virtual machine on an ESX host

    Currently, I am installing ESX as a virtual machine on an ESX host. I have a couple of hosts potentially put this VM: two 4.0 in the course of execution, one running 4.1. I would like to run this VM on the host running 4.1, and the virtual machine must run 4.0. Thanks to my documentation and research of compatibility, I found that it is not supported as an operating system to run in a virtual machine under ESX ESX, but it's for the workstation and fusion. I read on some blogs that ESX install as a virtual machine on an ESX host is possible (at least on older versions), but comes with a few problems, which have no workaround. I found (external) positions regarding do all this with the 4.0, but my preference would be to do with 4.1 on the host and 4.0 on the virtual computer. I can't find something to do with 4.1, which is not surprising given that the upgrade became available less than two weeks ago. Does anyone tried it yet? Is there anything, you have found or recommend as I approach to do this? (I read that the virtual computer must be configured as a computer virtual running RHEL 5 with 2 GB of RAM http://when all this is done with version 4.0, but I was not able to find much more.) Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

    Hello

    Yes, I tried last week and it worked for me. You are on the right track, we must select RHEL 5 64-bit as OS and assign the 2 GB of ram, and in addition to sound, you will need to use E1000 NICs for the installation to complete.

    FYI, this configuration is not taken in charge/tested/certified by VMware.

    Hope this information helps

    From what I've observed, the media files are saved on the catlog. If you click Catlog and right-click on the media file and click Open, you would see the details on the file (datastore, host). When you return to My Cloud and select the virtual machine, you will get to see the ESX host where it is now supplied the data store where the CD must be shared with this ESX host where the virtual machine is configured.

    I'm not sure if there is no work around and shared storage usage is mandatory. Try to use Openfiler to create shared storage and use at end of test.

  • VMW Virtual Machine CPU Utilization - script

    Hello team,

    As you know the virtual machine CPU usage will check for crampons, drops drama or sustained high levels in the use of the CPU on a virtual machine.

    But I'm looking Foglight to trigger alert when it reaches more than 95%, I want that all alerts to change radically.

    Here's the script available right know.

    could someone let me know how?

    history = #utilization of $scope.hostCPUs for 90 min #;

    average = avg (history);

    STD = stddev (history);

    If (mean.isNaN (): std.isNaN ()) return false;

    If (Max (History)< 0.5="" *="">

    Returns false;

    If ((#utilization de $scope.hostCPUs # > (moyenne + Registre ("VMW:cpu.)))) ((STDev.warning') * std)) | (#utilization of $scope.hostCPUs #)< (mean="" -="" registry("vmw:cpu.stdev.warning")="">

    || (#utilization of $scope.hostCPUs # > registry ("VMW:virtualMachineCPU.warning")))

    )

    Returns true;

    on the other

    Returns false;

    Thank you

    Vivek

    Hi Vivek,

    You could disable this rule of origin and create a new one with this condition:

    If (#utilization of $scope.hostCPUs # > registry ("VMW:virtualMachineCPU.critical")))

    Returns true;
    on the other
    Returns false;

    Let me know if it works,

    Gaston.
