Error: Running VMware ESX in a virtual machine requires the external virtual machine

We are running ESX Vmware 5 on a virtual test in ESX 4.x environment and machine unable to start the virtual machine on Vmware ESX 5. with the following error.

Error: -.

Running on a virtual machine VMware ESX requires the external virtual machine is configured to run a VMware ESX guest operating system. You can not power on a virtual machine until the external virtual machine is reconfigured.

We found after KB

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1030283

Howerver, I'm not able to find the option

  1. Select the virtual machine that is running ESX.
  2. Go in VM > Settings.
  3. Click the Options tab.
  4. Select the General settings.
  5. Under Guest operating system , select VMware ESX.
  6. Click OK.

We are not able to find this option in ESX 4, so we can run this VM.

Please help urgently...

Kind regards

The log file looks good now.  However, it seems that ESX 4.0 is older than I remembered.  Please, add the following line to your ESX VM configuration file and try again:

monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE

Due to a design flaw of material in the first AMD - V compatible processors, we do not support AMD - V on your host.  Hardware support for virtualization (AMD - V or VT - x) for the virtual machine outside is needed to get nested VMs to work.

    Hello Ajqb79,

Thank you for your message.  Firstly, your computer is still under warranty?  If so, I would advise to have your manufacturer fix it.  Given that this problem could be due to a number of factors, we will not be able to give you an exact reason that it happened.  From my experience, many computer manufacturer will opt to replace the motherboard, when something of this nature happens.  I can't guarantee that this will fix the problem though.

  • Tolls of VMware running within esx 4.0 running on workstation 6.5

    Hi all

I am running vmware esx 4 as a virtual machine in vmware 6.5 wrkstation.

When you try to install vmware tools within the esx, after installation, I can't configure. That's what he said.

The installation of the vmware tools 7.8.5 build 156735 completed successfully.  Before you run Vmware tools for the first time, you must configure it by invoking the following command. "/ usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl". Do you want the program to call the order for you now

I hit enter and it says so in a few seconds. "This Setup must be run in a virtual machine. Execution interrupted.

How can do us? He does not like a VM esx

    Thank you

The system requirements to run nested VMS opposes using the external virtual machine tools.  If you delete "monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE" since the external virtual machine configuration file, you should be able to install the external virtual machine tools.  However, VMs nested is not functioning properly in this configuration.

There is no version of VMware tools for ESX. The release of VMware tools for Linux may or may not work in the console ESX OS.

  • VMware ESX and slow syscalls

We have 2 physical machines in the company. Both have the same HW configuration, running the same processor:

    Intel (r) CPU of XEON E5420 @ 2.50 GHz

One is a regular linux, and on a second we ESX, version 4.

In the ESX we have linux, which should be almost identical with the linux on the first machine.

The version of the kernel is: (a little old for these days, but the necessary cause of the old project)

    Linux x 2.4.21 - 53.ELhugemem #1 SMP Wed Nov 14 03:46:17 UTC 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

The problem is that virtualized linux runs slower. I have read, that the load is about 8%, which is something I could live with. But the drop in performance can be seen by the naked eye.

    I did 2 test programs:

First of all was just some important work in user space (e.g. giant loop and count numbers). Here, the performance reduction is about 8-10%, which is fine.

Second program is syscalls - "close (0);" in the loop. And that's where this isn't enough anymore:

    Linux on real HW:

% time seconds usecs/call calls errors syscall

The machine runs on ESX spent 1200% more time doing the same thing.

Any ideas why this happens? It seems that the change of context is very expensive for a reason any.

You are right that EPT starts with Nehalem; Core (2) has no EPT.

    As for your comment

We run hugemem kernel because we have more than 4 GB of RAM. Thus,.

I think to use as base hugemem kernel configuration, but the passage of

    4g / 4g to 3g / 1 g split.

Let me first point out that other grain than hugemem (for example,

bigsmp) can handle up to 64 GB of memory, using PAE in 32-bit

    mode.

    Novell has some verbiage here

    http://www.Novell.com/coolsolutions/tip/16262.html

    that you can use.

I have not personally tried to pass the hugemem at 3/1 (I have not

even know it could be done), so I can't say if this will help or

not. But if it isn't, the kernel-bigsmp seems to meet your needs

for memory beyond 4 GB addressability (and it is supported by VMware).

    Good luck

    Hello Ronald.

Thanks for posting your query on the Microsoft Community.

Significant changes have been made on the computer before this problem?

A runtime error is a software or hardware problem that prevents a program to function properly. Runtime errors could cause you to lose information in the file that you are using, causing errors in the file (corrupt the file) so that you cannot work with it, or prevent you from using a feature.

Runtime errors can occur if you are running two software programs that aren't compatible, if your computer has memory problems, or if the computer has been infected by malware. As you get "VBScript Runtime error '800A01A8'" on Internet Explorer 11, I suggest that you try following the suggestions provided in the following article and check if it can help solve the problem.

How to troubleshoot script errors in Internet Explorer

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/308260/en-us

Hope this information is useful. If the problem persists, I would ask post you to back with the answers to the above questions, so that we can help you further.

  • A virtual machine created in ESX 4 can be converted to run an ESX 3.5 Server?

The subject says it all.  Our main office has created a virtual machine on their ESX 4 server running.  They want us to use the same but we are running ESX 3.5.  We have no time to upgrade our server to 4 again.  We get an error when we try to start by saying this is not not compatible because it was created with a version with more features.

If a virtual machine created in ESX 4 can be converted to run an ESX 3.5 server using converter?

    most important:

    change

    virtualHW.version = '7' to '4 '.

    in the vmx file

    then change

    ddb.virtualHWVersion = '7' to '4 '.

    in the vmdk file

the other changes are optional - for example, you need to remove the lines that start with pciBridge and all the lines making reference to... .pciSlotNumber

also take care of not to use more then 6 PCIdevices in 4 virtual material - i.e. the sum interface cards scsi controllers + network + video cannot be greater then 6

If you have a time that is very simple and much much much faster then converter - post an example if you want
