ESX 4.0 moving VMDK files

We went to ESX 4.0 the other day and the console THAT VM is currently on our SAN and the other virtual machines. However, we would like to move this virtual machine to each local storage to servers.

What would be the best way to do this?

as far as I know, you will not be able to migrate the Service Console VM. Your best bet is to install on the local storage at first via a scripted installation, so you will need to reinstall. You will find more details in the previous post, but the general consensus is reinstall on the storage that you want your ESX VM of SC to be on.

Re: What Console Service a particular COS.vmdk belongs?

How to pass esxconsole-xxx ESX 4?

Nothing to convert these files. Just copy folderour first screenshot) to your data store and browse your data store make a right-click on the vmx file to add to the inventory. Now you satrt this VM guest.

  • ESX can read a twoGbMaxExtentFlat VMDK file

Is there anyway that you can convert a twoGbMaxExtentFlat VMDK file in the type of VMFS.

We cannot read twoGbMaxExtentFlat in our current version of the Client Infrastructure.

    Hello

Is there anyway that you can convert a twoGbMaxExtentFlat VMDK file in the type of VMFS.

Yes, use vmware converter or use vmkfstools, the format that you have is called 2gbsparse.

  • Vmdk ESX to Workstation vmdk file file

    Hi all

My eyes bleed Googling so hopefully I can get an answer here.

We recently had a catastrophic ESX Server crash... and I couldn't get one of my virtual machines... What I tried was to get (at least) get the files vmdk off the storage drives, so I jumped the drive in my windows machine and use a java fvmfs utility to copy the files from the hard drive to my local readers.  What I have now managed to do, then I got the ESX vmdk file on my desktop now.

All I want to do is to mount the drive, so I can get out of it, database files to be put on a new server. It seems that no matter what I try to do with the vmdk file, I just can not access... I can't go up, and I can't use it in a vmware workstation vm... I read on the forums it seems I can convert only esx on workstation on the ESX Server, but this is not possible because of a hardware failure, and we will get a new server in a few weeks... I need to get the files from the file DB, so I can migrate to a backup server... is there an other way convert the vmdk to esx on desktop or mount it at least?

When I try to mount it, I get the error that the file is in use or not a valid file, etc.

    Help, please!

Thank you very much in advance

I never managed the syntax for pot fvmfs on Windows - guess I'm too stupid?

Hey - your vmdk rcover firstly to the * - flat.vmdk pieces - do you have these?

  • VMDK file unreadable after migration of VM & update of the ESX Server

Last night we have updated the ESX servers here and in the migration process machines from one node to the other (by placing a single node of the cluster in maintenance mode). During this migration, the VMs one has stopped running. When we finished the migration and had updated the ESX Server, we brought the system to the top and tried to start this virtual machine.

First, we looked in the directory of the virtual machine and saw that the VMDK file has a different name, with - dish at the end (before hard). We have renamed the file, removing the - flat extension, and this is where we saw these messages. ESX Server always gbehaved as if the file did not exist or was unreadable. Anyone can shed some light on this? Done-flat suffix in the VMDK file have a special meaning? Any recommendations for the rescue of this virtual machine?

Thank you very much in advance.

    Kind regards

    Michael L.

-Flat.vmdk file is your data file where all of your actual data has been stored. Name back to the original value.

It seems that you have lost the descriptor file (vmname.vmdk). If you have not an extraction backup the following procedures to re-create this file

    http://www.aMIKKELSEN.com/?p=93

    http://communities.VMware.com/thread/115063

  • Copy only the vmdk file to create a backup

I'm totally new to VMware ESX 4, but decided to allows you to host a web server on Windows 2008 Server vm, after about two weeks of reading and the VMware ESX product testing. I have used other products virtual machine last year or so for other projects.

Why not just copy the vmdk files to create backup vms? That is problem? I have not to perform the clone at the same time as any other vm used to create or created from the vmdk file copied. I tested with a NT4 Workstation vm, because the files are small and can be copied and moved quickly, and I didn't have problems.

I use the Vsphere Client to copy the vmdk file to a folder at the root of the data store and then by creating a virtual machine, naming the vm the same as the folder.  I created a model of the virtual machine to w2008 use Vsphere standalone converter, but the vmdk copy is so much easier and faster that of re-run the converter again on the model should I need.

I created a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine and want to test before installing Tomcat and MySQL. The operating system should get messed up, I thought that I could start over with just using the current vmdk file, I copied. Yet I don't trust using snapshots, etc. I have also created many Linux VM on the ESX Server for analysis of the use of Tomcat on them. I also have a XP Pro VM as an alternative to emergency. It is XP Pro on a computer that hosts the web site of Tomcat/MySQL production - slowly.

    Thank you

    Homerun

Take a look at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 for a script that can automate Virtual Machine cloning. When you start a virtual machine that has been cloned ESXi will prompt you to "I copied it" or I moved it"etc. If it is a copy, you would respond with "I copied it" and ESXi change MAC, etc. of the UUID. The only required files are files VMDK and VMX file. Others will be re-created when the machine is added to the inventory.

In regards to the tools, I would install them. It also includes drivers to allow the host ESXi communicate with VM for things like the soft stop etc.

  • error when I moved vmdk (hard drive)

    Hello

I moved a vmdk on another record. I am tring to remove hard dist pointing way older and to generate the new path

And now when I try to start my VM said:

"The capacity of the disk virtual parent and the child disk capacity are different.

I'm trying to restore my changes but still get the same error.

    Is possible to fix it?

Thank you and sorry for my English!

I'll have to sign off now for today. Anyway, in case you find the mentioned parent virtual disk, then you need to change the "SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 64-bit-000001. " VMDK"file, by adding the absolute path to the entrance of parentFileNameHint , for example.

    < -="" parentfilenamehint="SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 64-bit.vmdk">

    "" > - parentFileNameHint = 'E:\Path-to-vmdk\SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 64 - bit.vmdk.

This error message generally if the hard files have been copied hosted as VMware Workstation product, which uses a format of sparse file that is not supported on an ESXi host. Instead of the hard copy, you can use VMware Converter, or - if you prefer - you can convert the hard using vmware-vdiskmanager (before transfer) or vmkfstools (after downloading). I deal to use vmkfstools you will need to load the mutliextent module (see for example "Clone or migration operations involving virtual discs non-VMFS on ESXi fail with an error" vSphere 5.1 Release Notes)

  • Recover a deleted VMDK file

    Hello world

I deleted the "Web Service_53.2" VM because I didn't need. After that, the VM 'Veeam' does not, and this error appeared:

I don't know why a 'Veeam' VMDK file is linked to 'Web Service_53.2'?

Why these VMDK files have relationship with each other? (Delete a VM, an another VM doesn't work)

How can I solve this problem?

How can I recover this VMDK file?

    Please guide step by step.

    Kind regards

Looks like you have several virtual hard drives of many virtual machines attached to your VM Veeam.  I suggest to delete, make sure that you do NOT select the option remove drive when you delete them.

  • ESXi 5.5 - move datastore only different verses of the primary VMDK file?

ESXi 5.5 installed on Dell R720(2 mirrored hard drives which is Data Store1) and connected to the Dell 3220 storage cabinet that is listed as a 3220 in data stores. I recently converted a Server 2003 physical to virtual (2003Server). I noticed that the VM 2003Server folder has been created the data store Dell3220 and contained everything except the vmdk file located in a folder called 2003server in DataStore1. There's a cliché that was created during the conversion process. This snapshot should be able to be removed. What is the right way to move the vmdk file to the folder in vm on the data store 3220 2003Server? Here's what I think the correct way to do it, but I want to make sure that it is a production server

    1. turn off the virtual machine

    2. remove/delete all snapshots

    3. copy or move the file to the Datastore1 to the data store 3220 2003server.vmdk

    4. change the settings and add another hard drive... pointing to the file OK datastore/folder/2003server.vmdk

    5. click on ok

6 change settings and delete it from your hard drive 1 and choose the option to remove the virtual machine.

    7. click on OK

8 turn on the virtual machine

    9 fact

As you only ESXi host (no vCenter):

The steps you plan to sense.

    I'm assuming that:

-You have a virtual machine with 2 VMDK: a VMDK on DS1 & an another VM on DS2. Now you want all files of the virtual machine (the two VMDK and vmx etc.)

    1. turn off the power the virtual computer.

    2 remove snapshots

    3. go to the data store where to move VMDK is there.

4 right-click the VMDK & click MOVE (copy may not work in VI client data warehouses)

    5. Select the another data store where you want to keep this VMDK. Wait the VMDK is migrated.

6 change seetings > click VMDK that was moved (it will have previous VMDK PATH, so now VM can not turn on) > delete this VMDK

    7. yet once change settings > click Add > hard disk > select existing virtual disk > select the VMDK which moved earlier. > OK

    8. now you should be able to power on the virtual machine.

Note: This should work with primary VMDK as well.

Let me know if you have any questions

  • VMware ESXi 5.0 - "move to" data store a vmdk file has left at the original location

    Hi all

I had to free up space on a SAN data store.  For this I used the function "move to...". "browser data store in VsphereClient.

Did not notice directly but after I moved my E: drive vmdk file, he took no source data store.

How can I make sure that vmdk (the source data store) may be deleted without impact on the vm?

    1. If 'vmkfstools d' report without lock, so I guess I could assume it is safe? Is there another way to check?

2 vmkfstools seems not having the '-d' option in vSphere CLI? (East - this only accessible from ssh console on an ESXi? quid vCenter then?)

In the data store, the files were:

    -Vm\win2k8_data.vmdk [SAN03] (data disk D :)

-[SAN03] vm\win2k8_data - ctk.vmdk (-ctk looks that it has been created by Veeam)

    -[SAN03] vm\win2k8_transactlog.vmdk (E: transaction log 128 GB drive)

-[SAN03] vm\win2k8_transact - ctk.vmdk (-ctk always assuming that it was created by Veeam ~ 8 MB)

    Steps to follow:

-J' turned off the virtual machine using these car

    S ' installs 2 files on the E: drive

-Removed the vm disk (<-my mistake? maybe this step left a lock file? in power vm off?)

-Added the disk from the data store where I copied it

    Thanks for the help!

    behd

    Hi Behd,

The best way to check if the vmdk on the source is not being used would be to add this vmdk to an existing virtual computer and turn on... ? If not used or is locked by one that turns on with success.

If it has an instance running it wouldn't let you put under tension and raise an error of file locking. ?

  • Move a vmdk file finely put in service a new data store - now it's thick?

    Hi all

To elaborate a little bit on the title, I installed a second hard drive in my ESXi 4 server.  All my VMs use discs finely put into service, however, after that I moved the files of the virtual machine to the new data store (using mv) and readded the virtual machine to inventory, the disks are provided are thinner but are thick.  This behavior is expected?

This is behavior expected - don't use mv to VMDK!

    Use rather
    vmkfstools-i thin d

who should be faster, more reliable and give you a choice for the type of provision

  • advice of separate vmdk files

I am currently working on migrating from ESX 3.5 to ESXi 4.1; However, I ran into a problem with some VMS files with separate vmdk (such as drive C, D etc.) on different LUNS. I know I could do simply storage vmotion to take care of this problem and bring the vmdk on the same logical unit number in ESX 4.1, but I do not know how to do it when you are migrating from 3.5 to 4.1? I would still be able to copy all the vmdk in separate under the new ESXi 4.1 LUN and add a virtual machine to inventory? Thank you

can we assume that you are using vCenter 4.1?  If, therefore, at the 'migration' (change datastore) you can click the Advanced button, if you want to split the vmdk files.  If this is not the case, all files related to go to the destination unit number (Basic) logic.

I need to know what vmdk is used for the drive in the Windows of the client prompt. I'm afraid that I could not understand it in the vmware.log or hostd.log files.

    Thank you!

    Steve

    Hi Steve

You cannot map the drive letter for the vmdk directly, but you can map the drive Win on a specific vm using the SCSI number

An easy way to map the vmdk with disks of Windows is:

On the virtual machine 'change settings', note in down all the vDisks SCSI address example (disc 1 = SCSI (0:1), 2 HDD = SCSI (2:4)))

If you go to Windows disk management and right click the individual disks and select Properties, you will see that target and LUN ID discs

where for 1 HDD = SCSI (0:1), 0 is target ID and LUN 1 ID and 2 HDD = SCSI (2:4), 2 is target ID and LUN 4 ID

You map just for numbers of hard disk drive letters

  • Question/VMDK file size

    Hello

We are in the process of starting a new company and have problems with VM data warehouses.

Most of our stores approximately 500 GB and 1 VM home each.

They all work quite as much as we want, but our 01 server continues to increase in size, and we have already had an accident.

I see a 01.Intro vmdk file that is 260 GB, but I see a second, 01 - 00001.vmdk that continues to grow in space.

I read that it is a kind of "Snapshot", but how can I make sure it gets moved to a different place, so it's not fillup the data store?

    And do I really need?

A new starter with that little so if you need more info ask please.

    Thank you

    Welcome to the forums

The second - 0000.vmdk you see is indeed a snapshot.

By the looks of it, you don't want this snapshot to be there.

To remove this snapshot, you click with the right button on the VM - snapshots - Snapshot manager

You should see a snapshot, so delete by clicking "Remove all" that commit snapshots originally vmdk, so you delete any data.

If you don't see a snapshot in the Snapshot Manager, you may need to create a new snapshot in VM - snapshots - Take snapshot

After the snapshot is complete, you can return to Snapshot Manager and remove all

Here are a few readings to understand Snapshots: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1015180
