ESX 4.0 Storage vMotion

I'm looking for a good doc or webenar on storage vMotion

Storage VMotion is integrated in VSphere if you are using the Evaluation Version or are licensed for use with the version of VSphere that you use.

To use Storage VMotion, right-click the virtual machine and choose migrate - if you have a license for Storage VMotion, and multiple LUNS which Storage VMotion can use then you should see the choice for host of change, change or change host and storage storage.

  • Storage vMotion issue License - license of moving between ESX Hosts 4.1?

I have a question about Storage vMotion with ESX 4.1 license.

One of my environments ESX 3.5 existing consists of 10 ESX 3.5 hosts - 8 ESX 3.5 servers Standard and 2 ESX 3.5 Enterprise servers.  I use a centralized license server (I think that's the correct term).

I found that I can "move" the vMotion (and vMotion) Storage capacity of two of my 10 servers that only two of them are enabled for vMotion, both.  I do this by topic under VI Client-> select the host ESX-> Configuration-> network-> properties-> VMkernel-> Edit-> toggle the box "VMotion" activated-> OK.   I guess that by doing this, that I'm actually just spend my licenses 'ESX Enterprise' between the hosts.

Be able to run Storage vMotion on one or two guests at a time is a lot for a few times a year I need to reconfigure my back-end storage.

    Two Questions:

    1. this use is technically legal in a perspective of VMware licenses?

    2. now, I'm looking to upgrade to ESX 4.1 and wonder if I'll be able to keep doing this?  I have read that ESX 4.x got rid of the centralized server license model, so not sure if I could 'move' licenses around like that... In fact since vMotion is now included in Standard Edition, I guess I could 'pull out' through a license only one ESX Enterprise server in order to obtain the license of storage vMotion.

I let my support/subscription lapse for as long it is cheaper to purchase new licenses rather than paying for support costs with retroactive effect on my existing licenses.   The price difference between Standard and Enterprise is large (3 times the cost) that I don't think I can swing is business licenses for all of my guests past the bean counters, where the reason for this post.

    Reflections and comments?

Each host has a license key number. You can apply a new license key to a host, and it is immediately activated. I guess you would be technically violate licensing for seconds as a license number was recorded at two hosts. There is a place in the vSphere client to "assign a new license key to this host. When a license key has been assigned, it remains as a choice, then you can simply choose the functionality licensed one and below the other.

  • Precautions of vmotion esx 3.5 to esx 4.0 storage

Hi I have two clusters in my vmware environment. a cluster is runinng with esx 3.5 update 4 and another runing with esx 4.0 which is newly built cluster.

all LUNS are visible on two clusters when we machine cluster of 3.5 to 4.0 cluster migration. We will do so by storage vmotion as we have some 6 to new storage in the new cluster.

Please tell me what precautions it takes when we vmtion 500 GB virtual storage machine cluster of 3.5 to 4.0 cluster.

We have almost 10 linux machine to migrate on the new cluster.

    Please suggest me.

If this machine is not RDM, you can first make a Vmotion and run in ESX4 host, after that you can make sVmotion in the new host.

Upgrade hardware version 7 is not a must, so you can do this when you will be able to stop your machine prod.

  • ESX 3.0.2 upgrade to 3.5 & Storage VMotion

If I do a spot in an ESX 3.0.2 upgrade host ESX 3.5 CAN I use Storage vMotion immediately OR do I have to upgrade VMware tools on each host to the storage

vMotion them in a new home?

    Hello.

If I do a spot in an ESX 3.0.2 upgrade host ESX 3.5 CAN I use Storage vMotion immediately OR do I have to upgrade VMware tools on each host to Storage vMotion them in a new home?

You can use Storage Vmotion immediately.

    Good luck!

  • Is Storage Vmotion only for ESX 3.5?

I know Storage Vmotion is a plugin installed on the VC server, but it works with any rev ESX?

In addition, it is part of the company licenisning or do I have to buy it separately?

    Thank you!

    Hello.

Yes, only 3.5 versions.  It belongs to the whole of the company, but can also be licensed separately.  Check price, Packaging, and Licensing Overview for more details.

  • Storage vMotion of 4.1 to 5.5?

I am in the process of upgrading our environment vSphere. I need critical servers vmotion ESX 4.1 at the glomerulus ESXi 5.5 cluster. The two groups are now managed by a 5.5 vcenter server.

See attachment. The PROD4 cluster hosts are all ESX 4.1 and the Production cluster hosts are the ESXi 5.5

Can I install 5.5 on another host and add it to the cluster PROD4 so that I can vmotion VMs critical for her, then vmotion them to the 5.5 cluster?

Bottom line, it is how to make virtual machines on hosts 4.1 5.5 guests without interruption?

I can think in this case is to add one of the hosts of the old cluster/storage, vMotion the VMs on that host, ESXi 5.5 and then use the Web Client vSphere to migrate hosts and data store to the new cluster. With vSphere 5.5 and the Web Client, you can do this even without shared storage.

  • Storage vmotion of storage facilities to storage San in ESXi 5.0

    Hello

I have the host couple ESXi 5.0 with license free of all is vmdk are located in storage facilities. Moving all the vm for local to the SAN storage data store, but the local data store attached failed to attend several ESX host as storage shared, is there a way that allow me to use the method of storage vmotion to migrate all the vmdk to centralize SAN without interruption?

I have a vcenter to manage whole army but only for normal administrative task. How can I set the local data store storage shared storage and able to present multiple hosts?

    Hello

Do you have the vSphere licenses?
If so, you can add the vCenter ESXi hosts, present SAN storage for ESXi hosts and perform Storage vMotion (migrate the data store) local storage to SAN storage.

You will need because the function of storage vMotion (migrate) is a feature of vCenter vCenter, this option is not available in standalone ESXi.

See the documentation here - migration of Virtual Machines with svmotion: vSphere Documentation Center

If you can accept interruptions of service, you can use the migration cold: vSphere Documentation Center

  • Storage Vmotion - have

    Olá Senhores, tudo beleza?

UM client adopt Vmware no ambiente quer usar Doi/place CF, pretende usar Storage Vmotion, HA hosts alem, ele thought em HA of storage.

    Pergunto:

Docks e os pre-have technical material para what a coisa h.? SEI nao e only comprar o vSphere Enterprise, tem, but things a consider.

E, em um mesmo ambiente, vale a pena adopt Doi storages fazer para Storage Vmotion? OU seria desnecessario, works as storage so, em um e totally redundante ja.

    Valeu!

    Ivanildo,

Quando você faz storage vmotion, ele copia o servidor e leva para o outra lun do storage você estiver utilizando, or ate mesmo para um storage diferente, very ele nao mantem an original of copia, ele move os dados e pronto.

Em relaçao has ter experiencia voce precisar a lun of e origerm a lun of destino do no host wave esta VM. Em caso migrar by um mesmo as a VM atualmente esta diferente storage, basta as host VMware have access o e have a lun mapeada.

Caso VM is em disco local, e serums migrada para o storage, Sera necessario desligar a virtual machine.

Caso a snapshot of o have VM, voce ter than deletar, snapshot dependendo da versão VMware than used, senao POIS voce me engano na versão 5.X ja e fazer storage vmotion instant com possible.

E tem also one part of licença as voce ja says.

Segue documento com maiores details sober requerimento e limitacoes.

    http://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-4-ESX-vCenter/index.jsp?topic=/com.VMware.vSphere.dcadmin.doc_41/vsp_dc_admin_guide/migrating_virtual_machines/c_storage_vmotion_requirements_and_limitations.html

Como o Rafanovo says, o Storage Vmotion or o DTS sao nao para manter alta Tranquilo storage, nesse caso você precisa replicar um storage os dados para outro of forma com você sempre uma copied storage Principial has no storage of contingencia preferencia em tempo real, para as voce garanta than seus dados are atualalizados.

Usually some storages ja tem essa characteristic of sincronismo e copy os dados.

  • Storage - 5 ESX & HP Blade Storage expansion

    Hi all

    Current context:

    • Runing ESX 5 HP BL460 Blade Server standard
    • HP D2200sb PCIe Storage Blade consists of 6 146 GB drives & 6 empty bays
    • 5 virtual machines exist on a single data store

    Requirements:

    • Repalce the 6 146 GB hard drive with 12 300 GB hard drive and store the virtual machine.

    This will work:

    1. Insert 6 300 GB HDD in for storage of balde
    2. Create a new table
    3. Present this as a data store
    4. migrate the virtual machine to the new store using storage vmotion
    5. remove the old store of 146 GB
    6. Remove the disks from 146 GB of storage blade
    7. Add more 6 HDD for storage balde
    8. Add to the existing array consisting of 6 300 GB drives
    9. Range of Vsphere
    10. create additional data warehouses

Thank you, have I missed something?

Looks good to me, should be good to go.

  • Storage vMotion - WITH RDM? - Or will they ignored most of the time?

Hi all - I have a storage vMotion, 5 hosts in the cluster - five or 6 virtual machines with RDM are pinned to specific hosts for the love of the DRS, but I want to go where the readers of the OS, then to VMDK is one San to another. If the virtual machine has a C:\ drive on the data store, all the other disks on the virtual computer is through physical RDM. ALL I need to move is the c:\(VMDK) in the process of storage vmotion.

Time without are connected and work today to the ESX host in the cluster, all hosts are sized to see the RDM.

My question is, when we go to perform the storage vMotion, how to avoid such failure? the RDM are my concern in the past, I think I remember a machine do not migrate when he had attached RDMs.

any comments or thoughts would be really useful.

    Nick

You can also move the ROW pointers with the data store 'change' - Assistant. Just be sure to select "same as source" for the format of the target disk. If you choose thick or thin, the RDM will be transformed into a VMDK, but with "same format" simply the ROW pointer is moved to the new data store.

  • Storage vMotion - impossible to move the virtual machine

    All,

I have recently upgraded to version 4.1 ESXi 4.1 U3 of VC2.5 ESX 3 vCenter Essentials - I decided to make my new vCenter server a VM - everything went well on the upgrade so I am now looking to do work on my storage system (EMC Celerra). I have virtually no space on my LUN and my CIFS shares are increasingly full also... However I have a file inside the EMC system which is 6 to size which houses a 200 GB LUN - it's the logic unit number that contains my VM vCenter. What I want to do is... move this vCenter VM off this LUN to local storage, reassign 6 TB to the pool file system and extend the 3 TB CIFS file system and then present the rest of the space as LUNS for VMware. My problem is that I'm not licensed for storage vMotion and they only way I can storage vMotion, VM off the coast of this LUN is to stop it and move it but because it's my vCenter Server I can perform this action by the customer.

I guess I might need to drill holes in the host using putty to move the vmdk file, but I'm looking for any useful measure to enable me to move this virtual machine.

    Thank you

If you are not allowed to Storage vMotion, then you can watch using VMware Converter and do a V2V.  Once the VM vCenter has been "copied" in the new destination LUN, it works, make sure that everything is right, then delete the 'old' vCenter VM disk.

  • Storage vmotion RDM

I tried to storage servers vmotioned 3 which contained a RDM. The RDM were in virtual compatibility mode. I've migrated 2 servers that have been turned off and all was fine until I tried the 3rd server which was powered and it reported an error saying that the block size was too small for the size of the disk.

I thought that when a server with RDM was vmotioned storage only the file pointer was actually moved and the RDM remained in its orgional State. It seems that the 2 servers I have storage vmotioned now have virtual disks and the RDM were loosened. I've not turned the servers still to see if the data is still there as I don't know what the status of the servers were before the storage vmotion as they have been turned off. The vcenter is 4.1 build 258902 and the esx servers are 4.1.0,260247.

    Dr

When you storage vmotion RDM it converts it to a virtual drive and when he tries the vmfs block size is smaller that the actual ROW (must be more than 256 GB) then you get this error. the data contained in the ROW will be always available. Why not start it because it won't hurt

  • Storage vmotion to another data store on a different san

    Hello

We have a 3.5 ESX cluster running 4 host ESX and Virtual Center. The licensing is ESX Server standard edition. We are migrating to ESXi 4.1 vSphere and a new SAN. One of the issues that we are going through is because we are only in standard edition, we have no storage vmotion to migrate the virtual machines of data stores in the old SAN for data warehouses in the new San. Other than purchasing the add-on storage vmotion, what other options can I. I thought to add a new ESX 3.5 server to the cluster and make storage vmotion from this server while it is running trial license. I would probably need only a few days to storage vmotion on about 45 VMs. Please let me know if one were to do this or any other alternatives available.

    Hello

There is an unofficial plugin that does not require an authorization.
