I suspect that you posted your question to the wrong thread

This requires only a minor change to the script above actually.

    Something like that

    $groupName = "group"$accountName = "user"$accountPswd = "password"$accountDescription = "A user"

    $esxlist = Get-VMHostforeach($esx in $esxlist){ Connect-VIServer -Server $esx -User root -Password "password"

  • Is it possible to use GPFS or another build is a SAN storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts?

We have a license GPFS and SAN storage. I am trying to create a storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts share existing virtual machines. We tried once NFS, it of a little slow and consume too much bandwidth LAN.

Anyone can help answer? Thank you very much in advance!

It depends on your storage space.

You must connect all hosts to the same San, then follow the configuration guide of ESXi and specific documentation for your storage space (for sharing LUNS on multiple hosts).

  • Question about Clusters and host bus adapters

I have worked with ESX in a non-clustered environment, but I'm looking to experiment with clusters.

If I have two host servers in a Vmware HA cluster (using VC 2.5)

And I have these two server hooked up to an FC SAN, each with a FC HBA.

Now, I create two virtual computers that will be part of a Windows / SQL cluster, do I need a second set of FC HBAS in each server?

Now if I add a second series of cluster of virtual machines, this time window / cluster exchange, I have to add yet another set of HBAs?

I understand that if I had a physical server, I need an HBA in each... but unsuire how sharing equipment works in vmware. It's the virtual FC HBA for ESX?

    Thank you!

    bilbus wrote:

OK thanks, so as to be clear...

so, if I have one HBA for each ESX cluster server (assoming I don't need double tracks) that's all I need?

OK - all you need is 1 HBA per server.

Once the server has a FC HBA (even if it is used for the ESX cluster server it self) I now have access to a virtual FC HBA on the set of my virtual machines?

No, this is not how ESX.  Each VM has a virtual card SCSI attached to a VMDK on your data store, which is accessed throught he FC HBA above.

Is there a rule on how many servers can share an HBA (another bandwidth then)?

There may be, but its mainly led by IOPS / s and bandwidth.

  • Fibre channel host bus adapters should be removed if not in use?

We have a Dell Poweredge R720 server that has a Qlogic host an orphan in her bus adapter. The lighting on the HBA flashes yellow, green and orange. I wonder if this orphan adapter could use the system resources and if it should be removed.

    Kimblbob,

Despite the HBA is not used, it will use resources. Now granted it's a very tiny amount, but he uses them what. When the card is installed, it will draw power, as well as the host server will spend processes in the sending of communications "heartbeat" with the card, it is ready to use it... Thus, while it is a VERY small amount, he uses them.

I see no problem with you withdraw during a maintenance window.

Hope this helps to answer your question.

  • can I vmotion between different host bus adapters

    Hello

    Just a quick question.

    I have 2 ESX servers.

an ESX has a Qlogic and the other HBA, Emulex.

can I make a storage between these servers ESX vmotion?

    Thank you.

Don't forget virtualization virtualizes the physical storage - so as long as the HBAs connect to storage even as others have said there should be no vMotioning quick question.

  • Impact of the loss of connection to all host bus adapters

I was just wondering more of your virtual machines, freezing, there is risk of hard and corruption OS if all iSCSI HBA connections are lost? Reason being, I need to convince anyone here that we should not have our two iSCSI HBAs, going to a single as a single point of failure switch.

Essentially, it would have the same effect as having a reader "disappear" in the physical world. You might meet guest OS corruption, corruption of data, or other bad things, like virtual machines will be essentially have crashed.

  • VMotion with ESX and ESXi in the same cluster.

My client wants to spend his whole army ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 host. I know that it requires a clean install of the host. But vMotion always works in a cluster with a mix of the host ESX 4.0 and ESXi 4.1?

You will be fine to have a mixed group of ESX and ESXi hosts.

  • Connect an ESX host 4.0 in a store of data VMFS 3.31 with vMotion, and ESX 3.5 hosts

    Hello

    I moved 2 x a new vCenter 4.0 3.5 ESX hosts.  I also have a new ESX 4.0 host.

Can I connect this ESX host 4.0 for the data store using the 2 x ESX 3.5 hosts?  It is a VMFS 3.31 on a CX3-20 SAN data store. I was then going to vMotion virtual machines to the new host and reinstall the old.

I just fear that the new ESX 4.0 host will do something to the data store that make it incompatible with the older ESX 3.5 servers.

    Thanks in advance,

    Euan

Yes, you can connect and use these data with ESX versions warehouses. If you have sVMotion it will work as well. On ESX 3.5 you can only move the guest as a whole on an ESX 4.0 host, you can move the vDisks independently.

It is perhaps unnecessary, but when I update the ESX 3.5 servers 4.0 I unplug the storage until the update is running. Just in case...

  • Manage ESX 4.1i hosts to vCenter 4.0 Server

We currently have an installation vCenter 4.0 with a bit of configuration inside.  It handles 8 ESXi 4.0 hosts.   We recently inherrited 2 4.1 ESXi hosts and wish to manage these hosts with the server vCenter 4.0.   The hosts are across a firewall.  We opened all the ports required by the firewall and no longer see no traffic blocked at the firewall level.   Successfully, we can add 4.1 guests to our installation vcenter but in 10 seconds to set up communications, vCenter loses its connection to the 4.1 hosts.   Is it possible that the issue we have is that agent vCenter 4.0 is not compatible with ESX 4.1i hosts before?    Thank you.

We recently inherrited 2 4.1 ESXi hosts and wish to manage these hosts with the server vCenter 4.0.

Have you read the manual?  You must be at 4.1 to manage 4.1 hosts, period.

Is it possible that the issue we have is that agent vCenter 4.0 is not compatible with ESX 4.1i hosts before?

Is it true, what keeps you upgrade to 4.1?  It is a piece of cake, takes every 10 minutes.

  • May 4 ESX and ESXi 4.1 exist in the same Cluster?

    Hello all-

    Installation program:

    vSphere 4.0 Infrastructure

    • CLUSTER1 = 2 ESX 4.0 hosts (Enterprise license) (HA/DRS)

    • Networking is standard vSwitches

    • Storage is Compellent SAN Fiber Channel

    • About 20 mV

    • 2 = 2 ESX 4.0 hosts (EnterprisePlus licenses) cluster (HA/DRS)

    • Networking is Cisco Nexus 1000v Distributed Virtual Switch

    • Storage is Compellent SAN Fiber Channel

    • About 15 virtual machines

    The question is this:

How can I upgrade correctly these four hosts 4 ESX to ESXi 4.1 with very little or no interruption of service?   Yet once ESX 4 & gt; ESXi 4.1

    Notes:

    • Assume that I already have vCenter Server 4.1 installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 with a compatible SQL database.

More information?  I can provide.  Can I just disable HA/DRS, upgrade to a host at a time and then add it to the respective cluster and configure?  What difficulties will be the Nexus switch vDS cause?

  • flow of traffic inside and off-host vSphere

Our security team dislikes the vShield solution, we have in place, and they want to retire-

Now, I need to understand exactly where the packages are forced out the virtual switch until the physical switch where our security can inspect the packages with its firewall of choice.

    Here's what I know:

    (1) the packets intended for one VLAN different will leave the port of the host group------vswitch via the uplink to the switch upstream vmnic - this allows deep packet inspection

    (2) I can create ports with different VLAN ID groups that rely on the same subnet addressing

BUT - packages of VMS in port VLAN separate groups which are essentially on the same subnet actually leave the vswitch via the uplink to the physical switch?

or the vswitch will recognize that the package is on the same subnet, regardless of the different VLAN ID and keep it in the host vswitch?

Also, if I had to create multiple groups of ports with the same VLAN ID, moving between these port groups automatically packages would send to the switch upstream simply because they are in groups of different ports or will stay within the host vSwitch as the VLAN ID is the same?

    Thanks for help in advance!

    Hello

Your security team should seriously rethink their thoughts all around security of virtualization. What they offer is a situation "Hairpin", which will treble the bandwidth required to operate a virtual environment. It also does not correctly account internal segmentation of virtual hosts. They need a solution that extends from their physical firewall solution in the virtual environment. I have been asked many times and frankly by using a physical Firewall in a virtual environment is just a horrible solution. It will not work in the cloud and it work well in a virtual environment, I know.

I have layers of virtual switches within my environment and there is absolutely no physical firewall that can match what I do without resorting to tools that are not actually of security tools. VLANs are these tools actually. Instead I suggest using internal segmentation firewall or virtual firewall. Almost every manufacturer firewall is a virtual version of their firewall and I would go in that direction.

Please check your security team a usable Secure Hybrid Cloud reference Architecture that extends from firewalls in virtual and cloud environments: Secure Hybrid Cloud Reference Architecture

    In response to your ideas:

In general the different VLANS can leave the uplink or go to the following top switch, etc. Same VLAN ID implies the vswitch will route between these exchanges. So no, they wouldn't let me. So why you really need to integrate virtual firewalls in your environment.

This isn't a construction of distributed firewall but place the edges between each of your security zones. There are 3 types of firewall distributed as well.

The Ark of ref is a little dated, but the concepts have not changed. It is updated even as I write this.

  • Cannot add the ESX 6.0 host to vCenter Server 6.0

OK, I'm testing laboratory a vsan 6.0 cluster.

I have my running 6.0.0 esx hosts and vcenter server is 6.0.0 also.

I have the services platform on a virtual machine and vcenter on another. I was able to create a data center, then a cluster below.

Then I went to try to add a host to my group and I get this error...

Failed to contact the specified host (hostname\IP). The host may not be available on the network, may have a network configuration problem, or that the management on this host services may not respond.

Per this KB: KB VMware: Add a host VMware ESXi/ESX from VMware vCenter Server fails

I confirmed that my vcenter server and platform services server can see all esx hosts. From the vcenter server, it can ping the host esx and PuTTY can access all of them. I even installed the client and it can connect to all esx hosts. I used the netbios name, IP and FULL domain name and they all work.

I have only a single subnet, so this isn't a problem. DNS resolution works in all areas of both sides, vcenter esx hosts and host esx to vcenter.

    I am quite puzzled.

OK, after working with VMware on this issue, I think that I thought about it.

All my hosts are DL360 G6 servers.

My hosts are run the same build «VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.2.38-Mar2015.iso» ESX Downloaded from HP.

All buildings are in trial mode.

After placing a call to VMware, they had me build some ESX VM, the services of the platform and the vcenter VM on an ESX host. We suspended because it took all day to go upward.

Once I woke up all the parts (sql server, esx vm, server platform & vcenter) in virtualization nested, I created my data center, then Cluster then added the ESX host.

The hosts added properly, no error. Then I remembered when I installed ESX inside a virtual machine, I am angry that the iso, I had the habit of HP does not work in my VM nested due to virtualized hardware.

Then a fire came into my head. We will rebuild all of the physical cluster but NOT use the CV provided the iso file but use VMware provided iso file "VMware-VMvisor-Installer - 6.0.0 - 2159203.x86_64.iso".

I did it today. I have rebuilt all hosts with the provided iso file VMware ESX...

Spun SQL Server vCenter, service platform, all VM VM VM you need. My AD & DNS VM are on another server, so he has been upwards all the time.

Connected to the web interface (yuck!).

    Created my data center...

    Created my Cluster...

    Add all my Cluster hosts.

    All of this worked!

Therefore, if you encounter the same problem, I'm plan to generate your with the provided iso file VMware ESX hosts and try it. In my case, the provided HP iso file didn't work properly for me.

I also downloaded the iso file of HP 2 other times to make sure and do a validation test and it did the same thing.

  • Not available to add to Distributed vSwitch to hosts/physical adapters

It's probably something simple, I forgot, but have not been able to understand...

Learning of vSphere 5.5 via Virtualization VM Workstation 9. Have many functional things already, to the point where I now both hosts ESXi, datastore iSCSI via standard vSwitches etc. No cluster, but everything works as expected.

Currently distributed vSwitches research. I am trying to create one, but facing the question that I see not available to add to the hosts/physical adapters dvSwitch... Nothing appears in the list, nor does anything appear under "View Incompatible Hosts", so I can only continue when I choose "add hosts later." It is through vCenter Client and/or vCenter Web Client connected to the server vCenter.

The two hosts of ESXi have 5 network cards. They have all been used in vSwitches for VMS, the iSCSI management..., so I decided to add an additional NETWORK card for each. I rebooted, ESXi, each of them guests show their new unused NIC under Configuration > network cards... This don't change nothing, always do not appear when you add hosts to the dvSwitch. I also tried to put in a standard vSwitch first on each ESXi host, with no difference. So I thought that maybe you can't see adapters hosts/physics to add to a dvSwitch after that that they have been added to a cluster, so I quickly created a cluster, added two ESXi hosts, no difference. I changed the version of the dvSwitch to 4, 5.5... I tried different settings to maximum number of physical cards by the host from 1 to 8... Nothing helps.

I hope that I have reason to believe that you can add network individual cards of the hosts who also already have some network cards as used in standard vSwitches uplink adapters?

    Any comments appreciated,

    JH

    -

Haha... It is even stupider than I thought.

In order to tackle another question I got one a few days ago, I created a data center extra, with a very similar name. I moved all hosts of this new centre of data at any given time. But when I tried to create the distributed vSwitch, I accidentlly rightclicked the OLD Datacenter (empty). No host there to select a list empty... so of COURSE every time.

Can someone slap me hard, please?
