Manage ESX 4.1i hosts to vCenter 4.0 Server

We currently have an installation vCenter 4.0 with a bit of configuration inside.  It handles 8 ESXi 4.0 hosts.   We recently inherrited 2 4.1 ESXi hosts and wish to manage these hosts with the server vCenter 4.0.   The hosts are across a firewall.  We opened all the ports required by the firewall and no longer see no traffic blocked at the firewall level.   Successfully, we can add 4.1 guests to our installation vcenter but in 10 seconds to set up communications, vCenter loses its connection to the 4.1 hosts.   Is it possible that the issue we have is that agent vCenter 4.0 is not compatible with ESX 4.1i hosts before?    Thank you.

We recently inherrited 2 4.1 ESXi hosts and wish to manage these hosts with the server vCenter 4.0.

Have you read the manual?  You must be at 4.1 to manage 4.1 hosts, period.

Is it possible that the issue we have is that agent vCenter 4.0 is not compatible with ESX 4.1i hosts before?

Is it true, what keeps you upgrade to 4.1?  It is a piece of cake, takes every 10 minutes.

    (1) see the vcenter and esxi version, you cannot add higer version esxi on low vcenters version. and also 2) check the dns resolution on the two esxi as well vcenter.  (try adding with the IP address of the host). If it is not the case, check the logs of Vpxa

  • Cannot add the ESX 6.0 host to vCenter Server 6.0

OK, I'm testing laboratory a vsan 6.0 cluster.

I have my running 6.0.0 esx hosts and vcenter server is 6.0.0 also.

I have the services platform on a virtual machine and vcenter on another. I was able to create a data center, then a cluster below.

Then I went to try to add a host to my group and I get this error...

Failed to contact the specified host (hostname\IP). The host may not be available on the network, may have a network configuration problem, or that the management on this host services may not respond.

Per this KB: KB VMware: Add a host VMware ESXi/ESX from VMware vCenter Server fails

I confirmed that my vcenter server and platform services server can see all esx hosts. From the vcenter server, it can ping the host esx and PuTTY can access all of them. I even installed the client and it can connect to all esx hosts. I used the netbios name, IP and FULL domain name and they all work.

I have only a single subnet, so this isn't a problem. DNS resolution works in all areas of both sides, vcenter esx hosts and host esx to vcenter.

    I am quite puzzled.

OK, after working with VMware on this issue, I think that I thought about it.

All my hosts are DL360 G6 servers.

My hosts are run the same build «VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.2.38-Mar2015.iso» ESX Downloaded from HP.

All buildings are in trial mode.

After placing a call to VMware, they had me build some ESX VM, the services of the platform and the vcenter VM on an ESX host. We suspended because it took all day to go upward.

Once I woke up all the parts (sql server, esx vm, server platform & vcenter) in virtualization nested, I created my data center, then Cluster then added the ESX host.

The hosts added properly, no error. Then I remembered when I installed ESX inside a virtual machine, I am angry that the iso, I had the habit of HP does not work in my VM nested due to virtualized hardware.

Then a fire came into my head. We will rebuild all of the physical cluster but NOT use the CV provided the iso file but use VMware provided iso file "VMware-VMvisor-Installer - 6.0.0 - 2159203.x86_64.iso".

I did it today. I have rebuilt all hosts with the provided iso file VMware ESX...

Spun SQL Server vCenter, service platform, all VM VM VM you need. My AD & DNS VM are on another server, so he has been upwards all the time.

Connected to the web interface (yuck!).

    Created my data center...

    Created my Cluster...

    Add all my Cluster hosts.

    All of this worked!

Therefore, if you encounter the same problem, I'm plan to generate your with the provided iso file VMware ESX hosts and try it. In my case, the provided HP iso file didn't work properly for me.

I also downloaded the iso file of HP 2 other times to make sure and do a validation test and it did the same thing.

  • Adding ESX 3.0 hosts to Vcenter 4.0

    Hi all

I have a question I need help with that.  We have 4 standard Vcenter and we have some 3.0/3.5 hosts old, that we're going to retire but want to manage in Vcenter until we do.   I Vcenter configured to use the same licenses as virtual Center 2.5 server, [email protected].  It is also checked to "Reconfigure the ESX hosts to use this license server."

When I try to add a host, I get the following:

The license server vCenter Server GMT - VC [email protected] do not include agent for ESX Server vcenter, upgrade licenses on the license server.

Can we manage not hosts 3.0 and 3.5 of the Vcenter 4 without buying new licenses?

    Thank you

  • Displacement of the ESX 4.0 host a VCenter server in different Windows domain

    Hi people,

Current situation: two ESX 4.0 host controlled by a VCenter 4.0 Server (Cluster) within a Windows Server 2003 - field. All the user access control is done with the users in the domain of the old domain. The cluster and all the VMS are running fine without any problem.

There is a Windows 2008 domain. We want to set up a new server VCenter 4.0 inside the new domain and move both ESX 4.0 hosts to the new cluster / VCenter Server 4.0.

What is the right way to do it without block me out Vcenter / ESX?

    1) implemented the new vcenter one create a cluster

    (2) removing both the old cluster ESX servers

    (3) joining the two ESX servers to the new cluster

    (4) granting the domain users from access to the new domain to virtual machines...

    Is it really that easy?

Should which accounts I include both ESX hosts to the new vcenter/cluster? The root-password? We have forgotten, but there is a way to reset it (single user mode), this shouldn't be a big problem.

Thank you for your kind support,

    Wolfgang

You must add the hosts to the new cluster through their DNS names and supply the root password when prompted.

Make sure that select "piggyback pools of resources of the host" If you want to keep your pools on the new vCenter. To do this you must enable DRS in the new cluster too.

  • Upgrade 5.0 ESXi host w / vCenter on it

Hi people, forgive me if this isn't in the right place. Finally move the update and patches of my three hosts ESXi 5.0 with Update Manager. I was quite easily able to update two of my guests with managers to upgrade to a more recent version, however puzzled on what to do with the host that hosts my vCenter on that server? We have VMware essentials if we do not have to use Vmotion. Is there an easy way to update this host without vCenter cloning and move to another host to update? Advice or tips or news to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and help!

I guess your vCenter is on the shared storage - connect to the host of your power VM vCenter down the VM and remove from the inventory of the hosts - go to one of the hosts that has been already updated and add the virtual machine to inventory and run it - and now, you're ready to use the Update Manager to update host rest.

  • Determine which user added an ESX host to vCenter

I'm trying to figure out if there is anyway to determine which user has added a vCenter ESX host using the api.  I don't see this information as any sort of property of the host object.  Any help would be appreciated!

    Paul

You can retrieve this and other events by using the event manager and the queryEvents() - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.wssdk.apiref.doc_50%2Fvim.event.EventManager.html

There is no property associated with a host ESX (i) on which the user added to vCenter and since it seems that you are interested in a specific host ESX (i), which can help narrow down the query.

Attached, that is, remove / add a vSphere SDK for Perl script that will return the user who added the host to vCenter, you should get a response because it uses the Ref object managed the host ESX (i) and that changes each time you have.

Here is an example of course:

    ./findUserAddHost.pl--serveur root vcenter50-4 - vihost - vesxi50 - 3.primp username - industries.com
    Enter the password:
    added root host vesxi50 - 3.primp - industries.com to datacenter datacenter2

  • Manage an ESXi host using vCenter Server?

I understand it is possible and requires of the specific licenses for ESXi hosts, even if I find information on the VMWare site a bit confused as to what I need exactly. We have-

    1 License Server Standard 4 x vCenter

4 x vSphere Enterprise license 4 (who manage our ESX 4 hosts this site)

3 (and soon 4) remote sites that have the same server ESXi

I would like to be able to manage ESXi host using vCenter as well, is this possible with what we have? If this isn't the case, can someone direct me as to what it takes?

    Thank you

You need the standard by CPU socket for each host license to add to vCenter.

You can always create a separate environment and get the Essentials Bundle (up to 3 guests max) for $500:

    http://store.VMware.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=displayPage&env=base&locale=en_US&siteid=VMware&ID=ProductDetailsPage&ProductID=126843700&RESID=psfyPAoBAlkAACQ2y-kAAAAX&rests=1277824287882

So you should have 2 vCenter servers.

  • Vcenter Server is compatible with ESX 3.5 hosts? (mixed mode environment)?

Yes. You will be able to manage all 3.5 hosts after upgrade to vCenter 4.0.

After upgrade, you will see that all guests reconnected automatically.

I suspect that you posted your question to the wrong thread

This requires only a minor change to the script above actually.

    Something like that

    $esxlist = Get-VMHostforeach($esx in $esxlist){ Connect-VIServer -Server $esx -User root -Password "password"

  • 'Disconnect' a managed host to vCenter Server: practical application?

The vSphere client offers the possibility to "unplug" a managed host to vCenter Server (right-click > disconnect).

I was wondering in what situations it would be used/useful? He influence the virtual machines running on the host? Is "reconnect" everything just like linking to the departure to a new host?

    mudage

Here is what I use the button disconnect to:

I have an old vCenter 4 install with 10 ESXi 4.0 hosts, I now build a vCenter 5.5 system and need to migrate to this vCenter but I can't have all the time.

So, I hit the button disconnect and then add the ESXi 4.0 host in my new vCenter, then at my convenience I then host 4.0 on a host 5.5 vmotion.

I hope this makes sense to you.

It seems that this may have to do with the .NET Framework is installed on the computer on which you run PowerShell/PowerCLI.  Take a look at http://communities.vmware.com/message/2174319 - users have been able to solve the problem with a newer version of the .NET Framework (v2, installed v3.5 - success).

    Hello

I try to find measures to upgrade to ESX 3.5 host to ESXi 4.1 where the vCenter Server 4.1 is installed on the system of comments on this host.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

Should I move the virtual machines from the first RAID at one of the others? Whipe then come out the scores and perform ESXi 4.1 installation?

Yes, it's a way to do this.

Unfortunately, the ESXi 4.1 installation wipe the disk to complete installation (or logical volume) as you have experienced. Assuming that "logical partitions VMFS" you mentioned are logical volumes actually created in the RAID configuration (presented as individual of the operating system disks), you can migrate the virtual machine that is currently stored on data store of the installation disk to a data store on one of the other logical disks and then install ESXi.

  • Migration 4 and 3.5 ESX hosts again vCenter Server 4.0

I'll put up a new vCenter Server 4.0 with an Oracle database to take the place of two vCenter using express databases included. They are both on the hosts recommended 5-50 VM for the Express database, oops.

The first is vCenter 4.0 which uses the express database included is on a Dell 1950 server. ESX 4.0 hosts are on 2 groups on Dell blade servers that have 5 blades per cluster and are using storage arrays EqualLogic iSCSI for data warehouses. More there are a few individual Dell R900 and Dell R710 servers use local storage connected to the vCenter.

The second is vCenter 2.5 that uses the express database included running on a Dell 2950 server with, like 20 other Dell running ESX 3.5 of 2950 using local storage.

Looking for a vision a little and advise the host migration to the new server vCenter Server.

    Thank you... Jim Hurley

I would say the easiest would be to create new vCenter new host OS (I would choose 64 bits that will put you in the conditions required for 4.1).  Once the new vCenter Server online, I then install a standalone license server for your VI3 hosts, then begin to disconnect and remove other environments and new hosts.

Stand alone license server can be found
