• ESX 3.5 Update 4 problems of performance/guest chef

  We have recently upgraded to 4 upgrade and now a week later I noticed some drastic performance problems in our VMs. VMs (Win2k3-64 bit, 2 K 8-64-bit, XP Pro) that used to take about a minute to start now take 5 minutes. Operation inside these machines is extremely slow as well; Connect simply another takes a few minutes and each action takes some time. What is curious, it's that there is no visible errors in newspapers (VC and Windows) and performance counters all look good. Also, if I 'Export' a virtual machine of my ESX infrastructure to a 'free' ESXi host I use for testing, the virtual machine performs very well.

  We are running ESX3.5 w / VirtualCenter (separate physical machine) on 3 - Quad Core 3 GHz hosts with 24 GB of Ram each connected to a FIbre Channel SAN.

  Someone at - it another experinced no degradation after the upgrade to 4 updated? Help, please.

  I had similar problems in my configuration of lab. Turns out that shares that have been granted for VMS and resource pools have been completely stripped. As a temporary workaround, I just removed all the resource pools disabling the DRS on my test group.

  Another question, I lived after the upgrade to U4, is that the machine virtual networks randomly started showing very high latency from time to time (for example: a physical workstation I ping to a virtual machine that is on the same gigabit switch - latencies range from 10 ms and ms 2000!). I could not determine the exact circumstances in which this occurs, but it certainly has a devastating effect on the boot time of my machines. I think of messing with the memory of service console & Reservations CPU + Crescent "system resources" one little solved the issue but I'm not sure 100%, which was the root cause of (this was a common solution to VM network latencies in previous versions of ESX). In the meantime, I also upgraded my VMware Tools for version U4 (which has a new vmxnet driver) and I didn't notice the problem again since. Again, I'm not sure that this is the cause first and solved the problem, because of its random occurrence.

• SAN lost connection / Datastore problem!

  Today, we had to restart our SAN, which had effect on our ESX data connection store. The ESX servers now don't see the San. A new analysis has not helped and I couldn't add storage with "add storage..."

  Any idea what I could to resolve this problem?

  Try to restart the service "VMware VirtualCenter Server" on the videoconferencing system and then try to save the VM.

• ESX boot after power failure problems

  All, morning

  I think that this may be a simple problem to solve, but for the moment I do not know how. We had power cut which lasted longer as backup ups, where the two ESX servers has dropped recently. One came back without problem however it is not. When its turned on it gets to the boot menu, and when the normal startup mode is selected it panic the kernel with a disk error (device missing or similar - can confirm if need be).

  However, if I reboot it and select the debug mode in the start menu it starts very well, starts as usual and will run from VM. This leads me to believe that disks, files, and the BONES are fine and the problem in the config, could be damaged as a result of the unclean shutdown? I did some looking around and read a post on the repair of the boot sequence using the command: esxcfg-boot - r - could not however quantify if this was relevant in my situation or not.

  Any advice greatly appreciated.

  Check UUID in /boot/grub/grub.conf:

  (1) boot VMware ESX Server UUID (root=UUID=c087c715-534d-471e-a023-!@#$%*) is similar with your server VMware ESX (debug mode).

  (2) VMware ESX Server (root=UUID=c087c715-534d-471e-a023-!@#$%*) returns with "/" inside the / etc/fstab

  p/s: while you find how u hav thought about to reinstall your esx that can be done in a few minutes.

  I'm trying to copy a virtual machine from one Esx to another Esx on the network.   We do not have shared as a SAN storage.  The problem is that I do not know Linux command, so I tried to copy comments vm using Winscp.  The problem is Winscp did something to the file flat vmdk by adding an extension, and I can't change this extension with Winscp.  I'm doing something wrong.

• Adding storage to esx. Problems with VCB proxy

  I just added 4 FC LUN and them have initialized on ESX 3.02 with no problems.

  I went to the VCB proxy, which had the automount disable, then I think that I made a mistake because I put them online (done not initialized) and after that Vmware can't access these drives vmfs.

  Try to solve this problem I did the automount disable and scrub, but I don't know what to do next. Should I restart VCB proxy?

  According to some posts here, I've run ' fdisk-l/dev/SD all? "command and it shows that these 4 discs didn't fb partition type.

  Based in another post, I ran fdisk against each drive but I don't have the ability to place the partition type.

  Can someone help me on this?

• Migrate ESX hosts to new SAN array

  Our company has bought a new SAN storage array and we are looking for an overview on the migration of our ESX SAN infrastructure existing to the new array with minimal downtime. Currently, we use EMX DMX and will migrate to EMC Clariion.

  I thought that we could present the new table to the ESX host and then use SVMotion to move on the virtual machine, and then once we are full and everything is well, remove the old array. I don't know what the best solution practice to it would be...?

  Currently, we are on ESX 3.5 U2 in all areas.

  This sounds like a good idea? Any help is very appreciated!

  It is exactly what you need to do.

  1. present LUNS of size equal to or greater than those on the existing table.

  2 format LUNS as VMFS data new warehouses.

  3 Svmotion VMs of new data warehouses.

  4. wait for a whille and ensure that everything is fine and then delete the old warehouses of data.

• Running the old and new Vcenters simultaneously on the same San

  We spend VSphere 4.1 to 5.5. We are very weak with only 3 hosts running about 20 comments of the virtual computer on a San.  Our former VM VCenter is always on Win 2003 and I am changing as well.

  So instead of doing an upgrade from 4.1 to 5.5 and convert the former vcenter 4.1, we decided to simply fill out a brand new VSphere 5.5 installation to a new server we have.  We have also installed a Vcenter 5.5 new appliance as well. So, essentially, we have installed two different vcenter, old and new running.  Then, we plan to move hosts esxi 4.1 existing in the new Vcenter device manually.   Then eventually fly over the guests of a host in the new box and then wipe and reload each older host with 5.5

  So I've already finished the first half of this project.  But I have a question.

  During the passage of Windows VCenter 4.1 to the new host esx and VCenter Unit 5.5. I run two VCenter (ver 4.1 and ver 5.5) simultaneously for a short period of a few days.  We're still running on the host 4.1 old and the new vcenter 5.5 running on the new esx host 5.5.

  We will walk a host both the old VCenter and will be added to the new Vcenter 5.5 appliance.  But I'll share my SAN alone of course. If I do this and the two versions of VCenter (old and new) running at the same time and sharing my data SAN even stores at the same time, are there problems with it?  I don't think so, but I'm not sure.

  I installed the first new esxi host and I pointed out to my warehouse of SAN data without any problem. And data warehouses has appeared as they should.  But when I add the new host for the new VCenter, as part of the installation process, it displays all relevant San warehouses.  I thought it was weird to show during the 'Add host' vcenter.  Are there restrictions to running two VERSIONS different VCenter simultaneously on the same data warehouses?

  You can have multiple instances from running in the same environment vCenter server. What you need to take care of, it's that the ESXi hosts that share the same warehouses not have access to each and other virtual machines (i.e. do not add VMS to multiple hosts). Keep in mind that only VMFS3 data warehouses are available in two versions, do not pass the VMFS data store to VMFS5 when running always hosts v4.1.

  That's ok. When you add a host to vCenter Server it will show that all connected, as well as the VMS data warehouses that are stored on this host.

  Now, I have to spend my main Image to the secondary Image of SAN SAN. VMware Infrastructure 3 needs a parameter of Advanced Configuration for this (sorry long ago...) And now with ESX 5.1, settings or problems?

• Defragmenation of VMs on ESX.

  When I read the forums there is the Pro and cons of defragment the virtual machine in a virtual environment.

  We have some ESX using a HP EVA with a few LUNs assigned to our ESX.

  As I understand it is without official paper of vmware that says yay or no vm user defragment apps?

  Can there be a negative performance results when defragment a VM on a san lun?

  And these questions is made with the assumptions that no snapshots is enabled, and the guest operating system is Windows 200 x.

  Ideas and thoughts are welcome.

  Where I am confused, the VMDK is already virtualized on a number of disks/metas etc. on a SAN network, so fragmentation will as seen in the operating system actually make much of a difference in performance?

  Why wouldn't defragment make a difference?  What is a San, it is a group of disks.  Yet your VM have files within a Virtual Machine systems.  Thus, filesystem fragmented just like a hard drive on your laptop.  ANY reduction wasted IO or access time is an increase in performance, so why not do it?  The SAN is not the problem, the file on Windows systems is, and since you can't defragment EXT3, Windows is notorious for fragmentation NTFS/FAT 32.  It doesn't matter whether or not it is hosted on a San.

• Problem with my sd card

  Hello I just bought a new sd card and an adaptation of san disk, but the problem is when I put the memory card and fit in my camera it says memory full and it is completely empty, and even when I formatted the memory card on my pc (Windows 10 32 - bit) and handed over to the camera it still did not work it said memory full please help as soon as possible.

  did you check if the card is compatible with the camera first?

  is an sdxc card and your camera is supported only up to 32 sdhc?

• Cannot install/upgrade to SAN HQ v2.5 - unexpected error.

  

  I get this error after I tried the upgrade and do a fresh install of SAN HQ v2.5 on my server HQ SAN; but have no problem installing SAN HQ v2.2 installation seems to work very well, and when I try to open the SAN HQ client I get the above error.

  I just built a new server and installed the new v2.5 HQ SAN server, and as soon as it finished installing, I get the same error.

  Server 2008 R2 running.

  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  Crowlaw, you can check if your systems are configured for FIPS compliance?  To check this, the simplest method is to look at this registry key:

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\FipsAlgorithmPolicy\Enabled

  If this entry is set to 1, then I would recommend that you try to temporarily set it to 0 to see if this allows you to start the Client SANHQ.

• Disk problem

  We just bought 6 new readers (dell supported) for our MD300i and add them to the unit, last week we did create 2 new groups from these 6 new discs and until yesterday, everything works fine we could use these 2 virtual disks. Today, I found a lot of error 11 (the driver has detected an error in the controller on \Device\Harddisk5\DR29.) in the system of the operating system logs.

  I checked the drives on the SAN and findout the problem disc is reader 9, (one of the new disks) and the guru says that player has been removed from the group or this drive belonging to the other group, which didn't really heppend.

  so, the question is

  is this new disc defect? or there's something els going on here?

  

  Disc 9 seems to be bad and that seems to have to be replaced. Regarding the \Device\Harddisk5\DR29, it's hard to tell how to solve that as need us a DSET of the host server.
