ESX3.5 and Virtual Center update to 4.1

Hi all:

I need your help with VI3 infrastructure upgrade to 4.1. We currently have 2 ESX3.5 hosts (in two places), and we run a Virtual Center Server 2.5. What is the way easier and less painful to upgrade to ESX 4.1

the first step is to upgrade you its modules and vCenter Server.  ESX4.1 must be managed by vCenter4.1

    Hello

I'm trying to update my 2.5 Update virtual Center 2-day 6 and downloaded the zip on the VMWARE site.  When I run through the upgrade, everything seems fine and I click on install, but shortly after, I get:

Windows Installer - another version of this product is already installed.  The installation of this version cannot continue.  To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove programs from the control panel.

Is it not possible to upgrade on top?  You really have to uninstall the old version of VCenter to update to the current iteration?  This is my first Virtual Center upgrade.  Or is that what I downloaded the wrong package?  And is there a smaller package to use for update?

    Kind regards

    Darren

Another version of this product is already installed. The installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove programs from the control panel.

Is it not possible to upgrade on top?

Apparently not... It does not give an error, he specifically told you TO remove it all first.  vCenter 4.0 performs the removal of previous versions for you.

And just info there is NOT such a thing as an 'upgrade' EVERY install, Windows, programs, EVERYTHING a re - INSTALLS the product, some may simply automate the removal of the software if you don't have to do, but NO Windows "updates" package the existing installation, they ALWAYS remove the oldest elements, then replaced with the most recent.

I am trying to upgrade my Virtual Center Server for the update to version 2.5 5. The vehicle is currently version 2.5 build 119598. When I get to the step of database, I get and error that says "the DSN points to an old version of the database repository that requires the upgrade. The upgrade is necessary and it will be incompatible with the old version of product repository." Can I continue safely with the upgrade without losing my current configs?

  • ESXi and Virtual Center

    Hello

I am currently running esx 3.5 and VC 2.5.

I have a lot of spare equipment (thanks to VMware ) and had the idea to install esxi use local storage on some of them and use them for testing.

    (1) can import these boxes esxi in my esx virtual center server to manage (is not part of my clusters) and no intendion HA DRS Vmotion etc and therefore still free licience or do I need a licience esxi VC?

    (2) what I could use to migrate mailboxes to existing test of esx with SAN to my local storage under esxi, converter Enterprise Edition or just simply copy and paste on the network?

    Thanks in advance

    Joe

Don't forget to backup EVERYTHING before you change anything

    (1) manage ESXi boxes requires additional licenses for VC agent on them, you can't do this with the free version.

    (2) converter would be the simplest solution (Standalone v4 is now available, for free, no more distinction between free/enterprise)

  • After changing the IP address of the server licenses and Virtual Center... «not enough licenses...» »

    Hello

We change the Virtual Center and the license server IP (I saw here how to do it stop Virtual Center, change, delete and add servers... etc...). Now the virtual Center its ok, but when Ive tried to make the cluster, virtual center of reports me a "there is not enough licenses", and I lost the connection to the license server... any ideas?... I reread the license server, restart the Center Virtual/license server... restart the hosts... Remove and add hosts again...

    Thanks in advance

  • ESXi (free) and virtual Center.  I have to buy ESXi Foundation to manage?

I have a bunch of servers ESXi (free) and now I want to manage them centrally.  I have the pirce for virtual Center, but I'm not quite clear on whether or not I need to change the ESXi license or not?

    Thank you

    Hey,.

Take a look at page 12, it will show the different types of licenses with ESXi.

You will need to buy at least the basic license to enable management of the VC.

  • ESX 3.5 U3 with Virtual Center Update 4 questions?

Does anyone know of any problems with combining ESX U3 with Virtual Center U4?

    Is - this bad idea?

I'm getting errors when the network configuration "request failed because the remote server has taken too long to respond" I don't know if its network related or associated with mixing ESX 3.5 U3 with VCenter U4.

    Ideas or comments please.

    Thank you

Yes, this client was running ESX 3.5 U3 with VC 2.5 U4.  Only, they began their upgrade to vSphere, but prior had run several host ESX 3.5 U3 with VC 2.5 U4 for more than 6 months without any problem you describe.

  • Using of MS Cluster HA providing virtual Center 4.0

Hi, we currently use ESX3.5 and Virtual Center 2.5, I'm about to start an update on all our services for 4.0 VSphere and virtual Center 4.0.  For the moment, we have a node two MS Cluster to connect to the DAS storage that supports Virtual Center 2.5.  I need to know if 1: VCentre 4.0 is supported running on a MS Cluster and 2: are there documents describing the process to create the cluster group.

I did this several times for VCenter 2.5, but I am not able to find info on VCentre 4 and all my research seems to lead me VCentre Heartbeat.

    Any help is appreciated.

The "Setup for Failover Clustering and Microsoft Cluster Service" for vCenter 4.1 can be downloaded from http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_mscs.pdf and vCenter 4.0 use link http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_mscs.pdf

  • Virtual Center Server not joined to a domain

The environment is ESX 3.5 update 5 and Virtual Center Server 2.5 update 5.

My question is; Virtual Center Server 2.5 can be installed on a W2003 server that is not joined to a domain?

If the installation is possible what are the disadvantages and consequences?

At a later date, the server can be attached to a field and Virtual Center updated accordingly? Thanks,-Jeff

My question is; Virtual Center Server 2.5 can be installed on a W2003 server that is not joined to a domain?

    Yes.

If the installation is possible what are the disadvantages and consequences?

Depends on if you are using ad groups / users to connect to vcenter.  Otherwise, you must use local accounts for vCenter to provide user access to your vCenter cluster.  Adding the vCenter in the field would facilitate this in the future add / secure users.

and Yes, you can join vCenter to the domain at any time, but it requires a reboot...

  • VMWare Virtual Center 2.5 update 3 management ESX v3.5 Update 4 and 5 guests

I'm doing an audit of versions of VMWare and it seems that our cluster hosts are running a later update version as the virtual center server. Virtual Center 2.5 update 3 management ESX v3.5 Update 4 and 5 guests.

Does anyone know if this causes problems. This has been the case since before I started and there seems to be no negative effect I see.

Don't want to update virtual center update 5 as we plan to upgrade to vSphere, shortly.

you are in a supported configuration, so you should be fine

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vSphere4/R40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.PDF

However, with more agents on new hosts, you can see some are disconnects/no response errors for your hosts in vCenter.  In general, I would like to have my instance of vCenter to or superior to the latest version of ESX.

  • Update of ESX4 without virtual center or Update Manager

    Hello

I use a 1 host configuration, where Virtual Center is installed as a virtual machine. I understand that this is not "best practice". Our host in a data center and rack space is limited for us. Anyway, how we would update ESX in this environment? Virtual Center being a virtual machine, it will have to be stopped to host clean up the updates. We cannot provide a physical box at present to perform Virtual Center. Is there therefore a non Virtual Center / Update Manager ESX update mode?

    Thanks as always...

Unfortunately, it will not work with ESX - because updates are done differently. Each update in ESXi update the firmware to the previous version, while in ESX each patch is added to the ESX operating system.

The download link of the last update is here - https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/OFFLINE/release-166-20091202-254879/ESX-4.0.0-update01a.zip

You will have to powerdown your VMS put your host in maintenance mode - install the patch

  • The upgrade of the Virtual Center 2 update 4 update?

I am currently running ESXi on IBm blades and they are running version 3i, 3.5.0 Update 2

We have Virtual Center 3.5 Update 2 installed as well.

We seek to improve our 3i to 4 upgrade ESX and Virtual Center.  I was looking through the upgrade guide, but there wasn't this listed scenario.

    My plan was to:

Take c and inplace upgrade of the Virtual Center Update 2 to 4 update server

VMotion invited out of one of our blades, then update the blade and bring guests.

Am I missing something?  Are there documents more precise that lists how should I do this?

seems good... Just get a full backup of your DB vCenter before starting.

The Upgrade Guide can be helpful as well.

Also, VMware tools for your guest will require an upgrade as well.
