ESXi 4.1 storage path

Hi all

I want to install 2 Server ESXi 4.1 and a Bay EMC Clariion CX4.

In the storage management interface (Unisphere), each server registered with 4 storage (2 SPA and SPB 2) ports. The failover policy is ALUA 4 active/active.

It comes to ESXi on server1 watch 4 storage path (see: Server1_Path.jpg), but ESXi on server 2 showing only 1 way (see: server2_path.jpg).

The question is: why 2 server showing only 1 storage path, and how to trace this issue?

Thank you very much

Andarwen

Why 2 server showing only 1 storage path, and how to trace this issue?

There are ONLY 2 reasons.

Zoning and Configuration.  either you area Server 2 in the same way you configure interfaces on server 2.  If they are of the same configuration, they will work the same.

does anyone have any experience of MS clusters and the loss of manipulation of storage paths. I am doing a project to migrate from a storage Fibre path at a time. We note that MS clusters do not tolerate the loss of paths during storage migration (there are four paths). It is a cluster of SQL 2008 R2. While checking the settings, I found that the strategy of selection of the path is alternating. I found research that round-robin, is not supported on MS clusters (separate hosts). I guess that my first job will be to change the strategy of selection of the path on the physical RDM. I could change the PSP to the path fixed (active/inactive V7000 SAN), using the vcenter client. From what I see, this can be done without stopping the virtual machine? Change the PSP will improve resilience? I could switch also the cluster a virtual machine that is in a different case for the change in storage, to reduce the impact.

From what I see, this can be done without stopping the virtual machine?

His trunk to change RR to fixed during execution. Whereas it is set to MRU is not recommended.

Change the PSP will improve resilience?

It depends on the recommendation of the storage provider. We have to learn the PSP recommended for your storage vendor or VMware HCL. It varies from the version of ESXi.

  • Target iscsi ESXI 5.0, active path connected, mounted, are not not in the data store data store

    HI -.

I am looking for help to point me in the right direction.  This problem occurred after a reboot of the system.

    I'm in vmware esxi essentials 5.0.0 821926

I use the starwind software as my iSCSI target

I use ISCSI to connect to my server from storage to the esxi hosts.

I have 2 warehouses of data showing inactive under clusters of data storage and the data store.  I have a third-party data store on the same server that is loading properly.

I currently have the same behavior on three esxi hosts:

under configuration - storage adapters is the ISCSI path is active. Data warehouses appear under devices and mounted.  In data warehouses, they are inactive. On the same storage server

on the starwind Server - I have

    built a new target

removed and added the databases to the new target

Changed the IP address of the target.

On Esxi hosts, I removed the ISCSI server, discover places BOF dynamic and static and added under the same or IPs news discovery

I can restart esxi hosts & storage servers and get to that same point.

Whenever I find myself in the same place - course assets, devices mounted, inactive in data warehouses

I don't know what else to share, let me know what you need to know to help out me.

OK, incase someone crosses my ramblings, it may help.  My original question was warehouses of data that would not rise.  They were visible as devices in the area of storage under devices and as devices in the scsi adapter.

When I would try to force mount them, add storage, keep the signature, mount they wouldn't mount.  I did some research and my question was after a failed mount attempt strength as got data attached as snapshots warehouses.  I then mounted force them and he tells will data warehouses and I got them back.

I followed this KB to identify and resolve the problem

After several searches, I had in the ESXShell and found that there is no conflict of booking.

On a whim, I took inventory all virtual machines that are now inaccessible.  I then added a DOS virtual machine. Alto! the latency down to version 1.2 a.7 ms for all data warehouses.

ultimately the instructions said you may need to add virtual machines in the inventory, but does not remove all virtual machines first.  I was grabbing vms that were not in stock, so I didn't remove the old virtual machines in the inventory.

    You cannot use a single LUN > (2 TB-512 b) on ESXi 4.0.

First question is the reason for which you build such an older version? I know that the answer could well be related to support for your older equipment.

The general rule is "a disk/LUN = partition = 1 vmfs datastore. If you want to break this storage in two data stores that fall within the limit of 2 TB, you must watch what your storage provider offers around the creation of two small lun. I know with, for example, the HP hardware, you can create a physical RAID array with two "local disks" below to achieve this effect.

  • What makes a storage path ensures relative to assets?

I was looking around our new facility vSphere 4.1 and noticed in the section ways of managing a data store that there are 2 iSCSI connections listed but it said active and told the day before. Wouldn't be better to have two assets so they could be used at the same time? We will add more connections and would be nice to use at the same time. How are you going to change that or which is done by the selection of the path type? (see attachment)

    Here's how it works:

When a storage array is attached, vSphere queries table to determine its capabilities.  Of this, it determines which path to use selection plugin.

Given your screenshots, it seems that you have a form any of the picture of LSI, which most is ALUA arrays.  For a description of what it really means, read my blog post, and then come back to: http://blog.cowger.us/2011/07/03/alua-active-arrays/

Using provides the information in the table, host (vSphere) can determine which paths are "optimal" (and so should be active) and which are not (they would face a sentence of use and must be on standby only).

Under access roads 'Fixed', the host uses only the path defined to send data commands unless its not available, in which case it will change to a secondary road.  When the main path comes back, it passes in return.  Fixed paths is a bit rare these days.  You use only 1 channel and 1 controller at a time.

Under pathing MRU, the host uses the path most recently used to send data commands and passes only when the path in use is unavailable.  It does not back automatically (to avoid some problems related to the intrusions of LUNS).  You use only 1 channel and 1 controller at a time.

Under Robin, the host passes quickly (by default, every 1000 orders) between all the * asset * paths (those reported by the table to be optimized).  You use yet only 1 channel and 1 controller at a time, but you switch between them.

Using the default vSphere Multipathing plugin, there is no way to simultaneous use of more than 1 channel at any time.  To do this, you need a form any balancing of the actual load, which are usually addons.  The only ones I know who don't are the MEM (usable only with arrays EQL) Equallogic and the EMC PowerPath/VE plugin, which can use all the paths to the storage at the same time (with EMC and some other tables).

    I hope this helps.

    (warning, I work for EMC).

  • ESXi short of storage, how to migrate?

    Hello

I have a single physical server running ESXi 2x2.0GHz Quad Core CPU.  We have a single RAID 5 array 3x250GB, and I need to add more storage, however I can not add to my existing due to the limitations of controller table.  I have 3x2TB the disks I would use.  Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I would accomplish moving my ESXi platform on to a new array of 3x2TB?  I'm doing a place in migration mainly and I would avoid reinstall ESXi and the migration of my VM because it would take some time.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm sure someone will have a better way, but I expect it will take some time, no matter what anyone says.  Assuming that ESXi itself is not installed on the same table, my thought would be to:

    (1) get your hands on a 1 TB external hard drive, these animals can be had for $80-$100 on newegg, plug into a PC on your network and create the share to this topic

    (2) card to this share on the PC where your vsphere client is installed

    (3) stop all your virtual machines and start each as an OVF exporting to sharing

    (4) following exports, it is best to remove the virtual machines in your inventory

    (5) after that you can also remove your data warehouses

    (6) also, at some point you will need to set the host mode now, stop the host

    (7) remove your old records and your old raid card, set them aside for now, if things go bad scenario so worst case I suppose you always have everything intact

    (8) install your new raid card and new readers

    (9) create your table

    (10) to start the host and exit mode maint

    (11) should now be able to create a new data store (largest) on the table

    (12) to import your OVFs on the part of back on to the new data store

  • ESXI 4.1 STORAGE

Does anyone know how to cross the 2 TB of storage for ESXI 4.1 restriction?  I have 3 TB of storage, but can see that 2.

What type of storage is it? DAS, NAS, SAN?

You probably have to split the LUN in less than 2 TB junks less 512 bytes, which is the limit for ESX(I) 4.1

  • 2.3 Openfiler as VM on Esxi 4.1 storage space problem

I have my virtual machines, all on a single original hard drive as well as Esxi 4.1 install.  I have installed Openfiler 2.3 as another VM on the same intial hard disk and also have my additional sata drives for a separate Raid 6 array to use for storage on the same machine/machine.  My raid 6, once the parameter configuration software, segmented the total raid 2 TB LUNs, I then added/created a store of data from 2 TB to Esxi to start with (configured in the maximum file size of 512 GB with block size of 2 MB to get a 2 TB data store).

I went in Openfiler to add this storage, but it will only allow me to add hard drives maximum size of 256 GB.  I ended up adding 8 of them @ 256 GB each.  I see them in the Volumes tab under block devices which it will allow me to add as physical disks or add to a range of software.

Now, I want to create a large physical drive, it seems that I have to create a raid 0 array of new software as my only option if I'd end up with 8 partitions of drives that I don't want.  I have large files and if I add 4 TB more storage, which would be a large number of partition drive letters - too much.

Am I missing something here?  I start with a hardware raid 6 (with hot spare), then chop into 2 TB LUN to see/use Esxi, then Esxi will allow only 256 GB max size hard drives to add to Openfiler (so for only 2 TB, I find myself with 8 hard drives attached to the Openfiler VM), so I put back them in an array, this software time raid 0 to get a large drive again?

    Is this correct?

    Qprof Hello,

With ESXi, Max. disksize is 2 TB minus 512 b

However, you will need to create a VMFS with 8 MB block in order to create a maximum size of 2 TB file less 512 b

With a 2 MB block, your size max is 512 GB.

See the maximum for more details

RAID6 or RAID0 is a matter of dataprotection. I would not recommend a RAID0, because there is no dataprotection.

    I hope this helps.

    Hey everybody!

I want to migrate to ESXi 3.5 to ESXi 4. But there is a question that I can't answer by myself.

I use ISCSI storage, what is put in shape with "VMFS 3.31".

Is it Possible to use this storage simultaneous ISCSI of the two systems, also an ESXI 3.5 and a 4 Hostsystem ESXI?

Does anyone have experience in this context?

Greeting of the Germany and thank you,.

    Kay

Welcome to the forums - Yes you can - the migration of high level plan is updated vceneter (it can manage ESX 4 hosts both ESX 3.5)-> upgrade ESX hosts (they can coexist in the same groups and data centers)-> then upgrade the virtual hardware to virtual machines and VMware tools.

The names there are exactly the same (part iqn.*). Is this right?

No - each port iSCSI (initiator and target) must have a name unique iSCSI. Looks like you have confused the name of the initiator (that is usually automatically generated by ESXi) and target name. The name target iSCSI needs to be registered on the page 'Static discovery' (or even does not need to manually enter at all, if you specify the address IP target on the "Dynamic discovery" page, and the target supports the request send targets).

Now, you need make the name of the single initiator once again (and different from the name used by the target itself).

Do I have to follow some important and necessary steps? Does anyone have experience in it?

    Hello

As has already been said the best to do is install ESX in the internal disks of each server and then sharing a logic unit between the 2 servers number, just formats the data store in a server and do a new analysis on the other node.
