ESXi 5.1 on ESX 4.1

Hi, I have installed ESX host, 4.1.0 260247 physics and I tried to install ESXi nested, 5.1.0 1065491.

Successful installation, then I tried to install on a virtual computer on the ESXi embedded, 5.1 when I turn, I got the error

An error was received from the ESX host turning machine virtual WinXP.

Running on a virtual machine VMware ESX requires the external virtual machine is configured to run a VMware ESX guest operating system. You cannot power on a virtual machine, until the external virtual machine is reconfigured.

How can I configure to allow nested ESXi work.

You must add this configuration option to the ESX VM 5.1.  See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1016098 for more information.

  • Memory usage increased on ESXi 4.1 for ESX 4.0

    Hi all

Recently, we migrated about 130 virtual machines to a Cluster of U2 ESX 4.0 to esxi 4.1 u1 cluster and noticed that the memory usage is very high on the hosts compared to 4.0.

The band u2 4.0 was 255GB of RAM between 9 guests and the new cluster has 355 GB of ram between 7 hosts.

use of the memory of the 4.0 u2 was about 60-70% and now on 4.1, on the use of 90%. Can someone please explain this. It is more difficult to understand that there are 100GB more RAM available on the new cluster, but its use all this.

    ESX 4.0 host u2 were HP BL460 G1 - 32 GB each

    ESXi 4.1 u1 are HP BL460 G6 - 48 GB each.

    Thank you

According to me, IT ' was all about GST (Transparent Page Sharing) and your new generation of CPU. This phenomenon is independent of the version of vmkernel. Let me explain briefly,

New processor generation, such as Nehalem, have a feature called hardware support memory management unit, which includes a buffer cache called TLB (Translation Lookaside Buffer). I will not dive into the details but if vmkernel detects that your CPU have this kind of functionality, he decides to use pages (2 MB) memory instead of partial memory (4 KB) pages and also do not use GST as long as a restraint on resources of memory occurs. This is why you have a higher memory usage that you expect to see.

To work around the problem (not a best practice but it is necessary), you can force vmkernel to work with small pages and trigger the GST. There is an advanced for this setting.

  • Cluster of downgrade of ESXi 4.1 for ESX 4.0 Update 2

I have an ESXi 4.1 3-node cluster.  I would now like to come back on a cluster of ESX 4.0 U2.  I guess I can proceed in the same way that I set at level - free up to a single host. Installing ESX 4.0 on the free web host etc.  I know that U2 4.0 ESX and ESXi 4.1 can coexist in the same cluster as was the case when I first upgraded cluster.  Thus, everyone has done something like this before (downgrade a cluster)?  How should I handle virtual machines that are currently running 4.1 tools?  Thanks in advance.

I've never had to downgrade a cluster but the methodology you listed sounds great.  We all know have mixed cluster will break so I don't see it being a problem to downgrade.   As much as your VM tools has always recommended to run your version of ESX so if long-term current tools your going to be on 4.0 can I remove 4.1 tools and return the 4.0 on.

  • ESXi 3.5 to ESX 4 upgrade?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway...

You can switch ESXi 3.5 to ESX4 (not ESXi4)?

My situation is this, I find backup or image of virtual machine software is not compatible with ESXi versions so I have to run ESX.  I am currently running VI3 with two ESXi hosts.  I'll be updating my Virtual Center to vSphere and my hosts to ESX4 and just want to know if the upgrade of the ESX host can be done in a single step or I have to do a fresh install of ESX4 on each host as they are currenty ESXi running.

    TIA - Steve

Steve, please note, if you go for the new installation in the mod text or graphical user interface, all the partitions\data (including VMFS) in the disk\LUN where you install will be deleted. There is no option to preserve the VMFS volumes in the installer of GUI\Text 4.0. So take the back of your virtual machines front of new installation OR opt for an installation by script. Installation script has the ability to preserve vmfs datastore.

  • Use instead of ESX ESXi with vCenter

    Hello.

I wonder if I change all hypervisors to ESX 4.1, ESXi 4.1, some of the advanced features such as HA and FT are still available or not.

    HA & FT are permitted.

    Thank you.

    Hello

ESXi has all the features of ESX when full his license.

Although you no longer have a service console, you will still be able to use HA / DRS / FT / pools of resources etc.

ESXi is not an ESX reduced in functionality, it just has a smaller footprint.

  • ESX to ESXi 4.1 4.0 updating level and question VMFS

I am in the process of upgrading to ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 (rebuild).  I have vCenter 4.1 set level and the first host ESXi 4.1 rebuilt added to the datacenter.  I'm trying to find documentation indicating that ESXi 4.1 and ESX 4.0 host can share the 3.33 VMFS datastore that existing sites on the SAN.  I found the user who publishes say VMFS 3.x will work on all ESX versions, but before exposing the LUN to the new 4.1 server, I just wanted to be sure.

    Thank you.

You'll be comfortable sharing data warehouses.   ESX(I) 4.x may also share data with ESX(I) 3.5 hosts a store and be in a cluster with the hosts.

  • VMware ESXi for ESX 4

    Hello

Someone know if can I upgrade my ESX 3i (3.5.0) to VMware vSphere (ESX 4)?

    Thank you

You can't spend of ESX ESXi... ESX to ESX and ESXi for ESXi only... At least, not as an 'upgrade '. Provided that your host is on the HCL for ESX/ESXi 4 (u1 as well), then you can install it. This will be a facility of cleaning/charges however, wiping the LUN which ESX is installed on.

You might want to stay on ESXi however, given that ESX is pretty much going to end with the 4.x releases (at least this is what I mean)... The released product in 2011 only is not available in two flavors, just ESXi...

The ESX CLI, consider using the device of vMA and element vSphere CLI on your vCenter Server installation. You can also install the PowerCLI element to win these CLI scripting options.

  • investigating the slot sizes and ESX and ESXi 4 4 classic

I was looking for to set the AP following advanced settings option:

    das.slotCpuInMHz

    das.slotMemInMB

The reason why because that I don't use of tickets in a few groups of ESX host, but I don't want the slot by default size to use.  So I have a cluster of the armies of ESXi4 and went in the advanced options of the AH and set these parameters, and when I go under Advanced tab LENGTH info summary of cluster slots have clearly changed.  When I try to do the same process on a classic cluster ESX 4, by adding in the settings for the advanced options of the AH, nothing changes in the advanced performance info.  It's as if the settings do not work with ESX classic 4.  These functions only work on ESXi 4 and not ESX 4 classic?

You can change the size of the slot, but be careful with these settings. Think twice before you edit and do not set a level of memory.

This is the very good detailed explanation how it works: http://www.yellow-bricks.com/vmware-high-availability-deepdiv/

  • I want to move my VM to an ESXi on ESX

    Hello

I have a virtual machine running on one of my ESXi servers.

I want to move this virtual machine (or copy) to another ESX Server.

It is possible to move or copy the same instance of my VM works on ESXi to another server ESX (or ESXi).

However, don't want to do it through vmotion. is there any other way to do this?

Please, help me to know the answer.

    Thank you

    David

You have a few options and here are a few:

1 Veeam FastSCP-> Power Off, Drag Drop, power on

2 vSphere Client--> power off, browse the data store, ESXi download, download on ESX Power On

3 VMware Converter-> Power Off, "Convert" to ESXi for ESX, power on

I don't know there are a few others but this is what jumps out to me the head.

  • Application of ESX or ESXi Standard license or vSphere new purchase

    Hello

I read the following in another thread,

"You can apply any license that you purchase, be it Standard/advanced/business/Business Plus or even packages for small businesses vSphere Essentials and Essentials Plus, ESX or ESXi. Both will give you the same features allowed when it is applied. »

Once the license applies for example to ESX, does this mean I won't be able to change my mind at a later stage and move all my installations to ESXi?  Thanks for your replies.

    Best regards

    Robin

You can't really "switch" from ESX to ESXi - you will need to reinstall the hypervisor. But you will be able to use the same license key for ESXi you used for ESX.

  • Problem connecting vSphere client to a host ESX or ESXi to

I have tried with an ESXi host so an ESX host.  I spent the installation on a square between hypervisors, as well as to try on another box.  I have redownloaded the two hypervisors and check that they match checksums, I reinstalled the customer charge downloads of both vSphere host as well as the www.vmware.com/downloads.

Whenever I try to connect to a host, I get the same error.  First of all, I get:

Error analysis of the file "clients.xml" Server "192.168.2.195".  Logon will continue, contact your system administrator.

After clicking on OK, I get this error:

I would appreciate a suggestion or an explanation of what is the question.
