ESXi 5 in AD / DNS configuration

We are preparing to implement VMware with ESXi. We are an ORGANIZATIONAL unit in an AD environment. I understand that I must have research front and rear, set up in the DNS system. We do not have our own DNS servers, they are managed by the people who run the AD. I asked as the two parameters of research direct and reverse DNS for these ESXi servers. The administrator AD says that since they are not part of ad that it cannot configure reverse look up.

I see a few articles on adding servers to AD ESXi. If I will not be the DNS automatically register as do my Windows servers? Any input would be appreciated; I'm just trying to get a handle on this.

One of the articles I found is listed below.

http://www.virtualizetips.com/2010/07/configure-VMware-ESXi-4-1-for-Active-Directory-integration/

ESXi hosts will not automatically register in DNS.

All they need do is create a pointer to host (A) in DNS for each ESXi hosts.

Please allow points to useful/correct answers

    Hello

How the dns configuration works on OS X (Mountain Lion, if it matters?)

I discovered how the _not_. Your research provides only false or irrelevant information and unanswered questions.

In/etc/etc/resolv.conf, it states that it is not used for most.

networksetup - getdnsservers shows that there is no dns server configured for any "networkservice", even though the dns works perfectly (except in the case that has need of a workaround).

    Then, how it really works?

My best solution would be to send it to a local dnsmasq server that can be configured with the necessary solution, as Linux distributions can do (at least a few years).

In the latest versions OS X (but not alland since returned), translations of DNS occur and are cached through the mDNSResolver service.

Among other means, the current DNS resolvers are listed through the command scutil - dns

What problem or issue or a mistake you are troubleshooting here. What is your specific question?

If you want to run your own local DNS server, OS X Server (.app) is the usual approach, or - for a local network - set up a dedicated computer plug or area Geode or ARMS or some spare x 86, with a DNS server running.    Which could be OS X Server with a Mac alternative around, too.   Running OS X Server here wouldn't be not typical on a laptop, as the servers are fond of the fixed addresses, and most laptops wander networks.

There are around the ' net using DNSmasq with OS X, via Homebrew or otherwise. "  I have not tried.

    Troubleshooting Internet connectivity

1 answer to the first and second troubleshooting Questions:

First Question of troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what has changed between the time things worked and the time they do not have?

The second issue of Windows troubleshooting: what is the status of virus/malware of the machine? If you think it's clean, what programs (and versions) allows you to determine this?

Make sure that the computer is clean - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Many variants of malware will allow a proxy server if you are unable to Internet. Go to control panel > Internet Options > connectivity tab > LAN button. If all is selected in the section Server Proxy, uncheck the box, apply/OK outside.

    2. If nothing has changed and that the computer is clean, what antivirus/security programs are you running? Have AVG 8 or Zone Alarm? These two programs have had updates that caused Internet connectivity problems. I don't recommend either of these programs, but if you want to keep check them on the mftrs.' support websites.

    3. If #2 is not applicable:

    a. unplug the router.
    b. disconnect the modem. (If you have a DOCSIS 3 modem with battery backup, press the Reset button to reset the modem so the lights go out).
    c. wait 60 seconds.
    d. plug the modem (or wait until the reboot is completed) and expect that all the lights are on.
    e. plug the router and wait until all lights are on.

You now have an Internet connection? Otherwise:

    4. connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem. You now have an Internet connection? If so, there is a problem with the router. They do not last forever. Replace it.

If there is no Internet when your computer is connected directly to the cable/DSL modem, call your ISP because something is wrong with the cable/DSL modem or your Internet service.

  • Newbie Question: What should I put in for "Hostname" in the DNS Configuration during install ESXi

Note: I'm not a professional but rather an amateur trying to test the power of virtualization technology. I understand the IP addresses and how to configure my router, Setup static IP address and build my own computer, but I have some limited knowledge when it comes to the configuration of the servers. All I want to do is use this ESXi server locally in my house to run several operating systems on one physical box. I really don't want to have a server on the internet, I think that Comcast doesn't let me run the servers with dynamic IP package I have. In any case, here's my problem:

I followed with the installation of the link video tutorial ESXi in the intro email vmware sends you after registering. I'm around the 14:30 mark minute now where we are the management network configuration in the configuration menu of DNS.

The tutorial guys sets its hostname to something he obviously installation but mine appears as "localhost.hsd1.ca.comcast.net". I do not understand what I do when I set up a host name - and as I said above, I don't want to be put in place a server on the comcast network.

I think I'm a bit confused and don't know what to put in host name. I tried "localhost" and also "localhost.hsd1.ca.comcast.net" but hen t when I chose "network of test management", I got a message of failure for hostname.

Sorry if it's a super newbie question, but I will not continue to implement virtual machines or what then if this setting is incorrect. I appreciate your time in reading this / to help me. Thank you.

UPDATE: Ok, so since I'm impatient, I tried just letting the host name to what it was and continues with tutorial and realized that I could simply type the address static IP address from my ESXi server in my web browser from another computer on my home network to get the VI of the esxi Server client , then I typed just 192.168.1.50 which is that I put it was and it was successful! Is there a reason to set a host name then?

So, my next question becomes: can I run my windows XP 64 OS at the same time as the ESXi Server? Each are installed on different disks in the same physical box, but this computer is one of my main computers that I work on in windows every day so ideally I would have ESXi running but also be able to use the base operating system. Is this possible or am I just dreaming / confused?

Your welcome hardnesses, I think you can try to re-insalling ESXi with the hostanme you want, or you can connect to the existing installation with an unsupported option and try the same thing.

You can also use VMware PowerCLI to add several DNS servers. From the console PowerCLI:

    Get-VMHost | Get-VMHostNetwork | Game-VMHostNetwork - DnsAddress "x.x.x.x", "x.x.x.x", "x.x.x.x".

If want to apply this to all ESX hosts, just remove the :

    Get-VMHost | Get-VMHostNetwork | Game-VMHostNetwork - DnsAddress "10.0.0.1","10.0.0.2","10.0.0.3"»

  • Connection 12:00 ACS DNS configuration does not resolve the address

    Hello

I'm trying to configure the ACS with AD in the identity store but spin the question.

I enter the AD domain name and the user name and the password and click on the button "Test connection" and receive a DNS error indicating that he "cannot resolve network address.

I connected to the CLI and test from there domain name and it works very well.

I am confused any help would be grateful.

    Thank you.

    Hi André,.

In the configuration of Active Directory, make sure that you have entered the full domain name. With this access to the ACS through SSH connection and make sure the time zone and the time the GBA and the AD is the same thing and make sure that the ntp server are configured on the CLI of ACS.

Here are the steps to do:

Step 1: Set the time on the ACS corresponding to AD. Type the command "clock {game} [month day hh:min:ss yyyy]."

Step 2: Configure the time zone. Type the command in the configuration mode ' clock timezone (timezone).

Step 3: Configure the ntp server. Type "ntp server (address IP/hostname).

  • Best way to migrate virtual machines to new ESXi hosts with a different configuration of networking.

We currently have a cluster of 6 Dell machines that move VM 120 or so on ESXi 5.5. Networking consists of a dVswitch with 6 uplinks that map to 6 x 1gig physical NETWORK adapters on each host ESXi... These are grouped into 3 trunks / gal, so we have 2 GB by SHIFTING of the bandwidth and failover. The LAGS are configured as follows:

    LAG1

Traffic to our (NFS) shared data store and management of ESXi. (vmk0)

    LAG2

Access to the network of the VM - groups of different ports on different VLANS

    LAG3

    vMotion (vmk1)

We just bought 6 new Dell machines that have connections fiber 2 x 10gig each. The idea is to bring together in a 20Ggig LAG by machine that will handle all of the traffic, so traffic NFS data store, network traffic from the VM, vMotion and traffic management ESXi.

What is the best way to migrate the virtual machine in the cluster existing to the new machines? Many of the virtual machine are essential, so we cannot stop time.

Can I create the new DELAY on existing dVswitch and put it as an auxiliary card? I'll be able to do it for all 3 of the above both above LAGS?

Thanks for the info Alistar, it's almost here. The bit that was me stumping was that after establishing a new dVswitch I received messages that the new dvSwitch was not reachable on the old host, when I tried to migrate the virtual computer.

The solution (with the permission of VMware Support) was that I need to add the two dVswitches to one of the old hosts, then assign a physical alternative on this host uplink to a temporary 3 uplink on the new dVswitch. I then tag all the relevant VLAN that uplink.

This way I can first migrate the virtual machine to the new dVswitch networking so I can move the computer to the new cluster.

Obviously I can only migrate from old to new cluster with a single host. each virtual machine must be a double for the host with 2 switches, and then to the new cluster. I also had to have the two dVswitches to the same version.

Fortunately, I had a physical rising spare on the hosts of the old, otherwise I would have had to break one of the trunks and re-use of one of these uplinks.

Oh and be aware, impossible to use the same names for groups of ports 2 DV switches, they must be unique!

  • Need to move virtual machines and power over the other ESXi HA and issues of Configuration of power

    Dears

Need to move virtual machines and power on ESXi others using the HA and Power Options

So what are the Options I need activate and deactivate:

    Turn on Vsphere HA

    Activate the tracking host

    Admission control (disabled)

    VM Machine Options

    VM restart priority (medium)

Response from the host of off the power isolation

    VM monitoring (people with disabilities)

    Monitoring of (high) sensitivity

Heartbeat of data store (select one of cluster data warehouses taking into account my preferences) of the data store is checked

    On each:

Start/stop of the virtual machine is turned off

Please indicate the required Options and on virtual machines, we are not turning on?

Just to be clear, that VMware HA will only restart the VMS if ESXi hosts fails - or surveillance of the VM is turned on which will be monitors VMs will they crash or suspend and restart the virtual machine affected.

and just to be clear, that the response of insulation parameter has nothing to do whther THAT HA will work or not - it does come into play if the ESXi host is isolated of the HA - Cluster

xMotion works only between active ESXi hosts that can communicate with the server vCenter - and if the ESXi host broke down or became isolated and vMotion may not work.

vMotion is automated with DRS that vMotion will a VM who need more resources to an ESXi host with enough reosurces.

  • V5 vSphere Client VI - connectivity to vCenter Server via the non-ideal DNS configuration

Here's a theoretical question that I fight for an answer at the bottom.   For example, the question is:
    ..
You have a VI Client in Active Directory (AD) domain n ° 1 with its own DNS, DNS #1 System.
You have a server vCenter and ESX hosts in AD #2 with its own system DNS, DNS #2 domain
The vCenter server and esx in AD #2 servers have DNS entries in DNS as follows #2...
    vcenter1. DNS2.com
    Esx1.DNS2.com
    ESX2. DNS2.com
However, in AD #1 the same servers have entered DNS DNS #1 as follows...
    vcenter1. DNS1.com
    Esx1.DNS1.com
    ESX2. DNS1.com
The VI in AD #1 client must connect properly on the vCenter server, using the DNS #1 name vcenter1.dns1.com.   It's pretty obvious.  However, what happens when you start a console KVM remotely to one of the virtual machines on VMware ESX Server?  I don't think it'll work.  I think that the VI client is trying to communicate with the service console of the ESX Server hosting the virtual machine by using the DNS entry of the ESX Server that is known to vCenter server, IE esx1.dns2.com, which is not a FULL domain name in the DNS # 1 VI client.
I need to review this issue for VC2.5U6 with ESX 3.5U5 and an implementation of vSphere 5, even though I think that it is the same for all versions.   Incidentally, I read KB749640, talking about DNS but I don't think it covers where the VI client is a DNS domain disparate with DNS names of the esx servers different to the one known by the VC server.
I hope the above is clear.  Can develop if necessary
    Thank you, Jan

    ESX host name is esx1.test.com.

In provided customer vSphre the hostname for connectivity is different. for example: esx1.prod.com, however this name is directed to the same host with intellectual property.

To do this, we edit hosts file c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

  • [ESXi vs VMWareServer] How to configure my Apache and IIS?

Purpose: I have to run [PHP + Apache + MySQL on Apache] and [ASP + SQL Server through IIS] on the same machine.

Solution 1: PHP + Apache + MySQL on Windows.

Solution 2: Linux (Apache + PHP + MySQL) in VMWare Server on Windows.

Solution 2 b: Linux (Apache + PHP) in VMWare Server on Windows. MySQL is installed on Windows and is accessible by a Linux virtual machine via the local network.

Solution 3: Windows in VMWare Server on Linux.

Solution 4: Linux and Windows on ESXi.

For 1: I do not take this solution, because non-native Linux environment gives poor performance of PHP and no good url rewrite support.

So, I need to decide between solution 2, 3 and 4.

I understand 4) is the best solution in terms of performance. But I'm new to VMWare. I need easy management. I do not know if something would have mysteryously wrong on my ESXi machine one day.

So my question boils down to [Performance gained by ESXi] VS. [Acquired by VMWare Server Management].

I don't know how much performance I could win using ESXi and harder it will be to use the production environment.

Anyone with experience of the real world in it? Thank you!

Development of VMware Server is dead, to the best of my knowledge, no other patches or versions are coming.

I would never start a deployment on a software platform that is the end of life.

Better performance on esxi is significantly fairer under heavy load, hard equity of this guarantee of resource planning.

Esxi management is like managing an embedded linux or cisco box, it has qualities unixy but cautioned a number of unique and implemented controls.

If you're worred about the overhead of learning and that you are familiar and comfortable with linux in general management, you can also consider esx.

ESX has more commands that feel like rhel 5.2, it is fewer machines than esxi and feels more like a box of special rhel.

When I started with esxi 3.5 only the hardest part was finding how to download a virtual machine.

Everything else was really easy and feasible through the vsphere client.

Using vmware server will work, but this isn't the best solution in terms of performance or future bug fixes.

  • Static DNS records; Bad, good ugly.

    Hello

always when I want to add the new ESXi5 host to vCenter I creat static record on DNS, after this host to join in DC and then add the host to vCenter.

is it possible to join my poor host to vCenter without creating records staics on DNS manually? He can see that when joining ESXi host DC or a way to create the dynamic DNS record?

Unfortunately the-host, these must be manually created in all cases. Take a look at Re: ESXi 5 in AD / DNS configuration where Troy describes the reason for this.

  • Change of identification 5.0 ESXi Hosts DNS

I have a 5.0 vSphere infrastructure not integrated with Active Directory.

Either the vCenter and ESXi hosts have a DNS identification that uses a domain name that is identical to an existing Active Directory domain.

To avoid potential conflicts, I plan to change the domain name in the DNS configuration, as described on page 74 of the manual on the https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-501-networking-guide.pdf page.

Can I just change the DNS domain name without having to restart ESXi hosts?

The domain name DNS influence the affiliation of ESXi in a cluster (not integrated into AD)?

Should I change the name of the DNS domain of the vCenter as well?

Is there anything else I should consider?

    Concerning

    Marius

I recommend you change the domain name on all systems related to the vpshere environment.

Don't forget to also change your dns server DNS records. I guess they are hooked up with the right dns name vCenter?

otherwise, esx server and vcenter server can not see the other...

  • How to reset the configuration on esxi 5.1 which hangs at startup?

Hi, I have a lab at home where I have an ESXi 5.1.0 host configured to turn on a virtual machine at startup of the host. The host starts and I'll see the DCUI for a few seconds before getting a purple screen crash. This started after I set up a virtual machine to use the pass through peripheral PCI. I found 2039030 which explains this bug KB. There is a patch, but as much as I know I can't apply it because the host crashes. Now, I'm a bit of a newb and was looking for ways to reset the configuration to prevent switch off when the host starts the virtual machine. I can't find a way to make this change. I tried the recovery of hypervisor mode during startup (Maj (R) but I get a warning saying there is no other hypervisors for restore. So is there a way I can either apply the hotfix to a host offline esxi (starting with a knoppix USB) or change a configuration so that vm does not automatically turn on, or if necessary just reset the entire configuration (again, by booting to a usb key)? Thank you!

Probably the best way to reset the configuration in this case is to re - install ESXi. Make sure that you select "Install ESXi, VMFS datastore preserve" and - once installed and configured - register the virtual machine to inventory in click with the right button on their .vmx files in the data store Navigator.
