EtherChannel or fiber channel on 3508?

When you aggregate several fibers together on G 3508 GBIC, you configure as an etherchannel or fiber channel? I have looked around online for hours, but can not find what it mentioned anywhere.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

EtherChannel (or link aggregate, or whatever you prefer).

Fibre channel is a data link protocol used in storage networks and a different protocol for ethernet.

  • Two R810s, each with two 8Gb Fiber Channel HBA + MD3620F + MD1220

    Hi people.

I am planning an installation on this end, and I'm tender hand in the hope that the community can help me carry this all together.

To explain, I have two servers Dell PowerEdge R810, each with two 8 GB HBA Fibre Channel adapters.

I also have a Bay SAN of Dell PowerVault MD3620F 8 Gbps, with two controllers.

I also have a Dell PowerVault MD1220 DAS SAS Expander Bay.

I think to connects both R810 servers directly to the MD3620F, in order to consume all ports of four CF on the MD3620F. That is, one in each controller, from two HBAs in each server. (I can do this, or do I need a Fibre Channel switch? The MD3620F has 4 available ports, 2 per controller, so it would seem to be a natural configuration for only these two servers)

Then, I will link the MD1220 to the MD3620F, so that its readers are also accessible through the two R810s on the link of Fiber Channel 8 Gbps. (what is the process to connect a MD1220 to a MD3620F?)

    Thoughts, tips, suggestions?

    Thank you

  • VSphere storage system and fiber channel

I am looking to buy a San fiber channel (HP P2000 G3), 2 switch fabric and 2 servers DL380G7.

I just installed SAN iSCSI so far, so I'm pretty new to Fibre Channel storage.

I'm looking for white papers on VSphere and the P2000 SAN to ensure that it is correctly installed and optimize!

Is that all I need to know about configuring HP P2000 and VSPhere?

Is there a documentation existing on this subject?

    Thank you!

Well, that's something to ask HP and EMC. Maybe with the next Firmware update of recommendation changes policy.

  • How to locate the fiber channel SAN disks on the ESX Server

    Hi all

    Please help on this

How to find and configure the fiber channel SAN disks on the ESX Server

    Concerning

    Vijay

Assuming that you have configured LUNS on your storage space itself you will need to ensure that the ID in the world of fiber HBA on the host ESX (you can see them registered against fiber HBA under storage adapters, WWID) are configured on the switch of fiber access (read and write).

In the VI Client connected to your ESX host, select the storage adapters tab and highlight the Fibre HBA. Right-click and select Rescan. If you have correctly configured the SAN and the Fibre switch, then the LUNS now appear under the fiber HBA. Go to storage and select Add storage. Follow the wizard through to add LUNS and VMFS format. Do this for each ESX host that you want to see the LUNS.

I am pleased that you guessed it running. Thank you for posting to the forum and let us know that you fixed it and what you have done to address them. This information could be useful to some other drive in the forum who will work with these switches at some point. It's this kind of information sharing that makes the forum so useful and valuable.

  • How do I rescan fiber channel without having to reboot host

    Hello

I have a few questions regarding the removal of LUNS and vmotion.  My first question is that I can't seem to be able to delete a LUN in vsphere client 5.  I get the error message but I think it's because guests can still see the LUN.  I unpresented this LUN in command mode and deleted.  Now in vsphere client, the logic unit number shows idle and when I do a new scan task's not going anywhere.  It seems that the host cannot see that LUN more and is having a heart attack.  The worst is that vmotion does not work when this happens.  So to fix this I had to reboot the esx host.  Once the host is back online this LUN disappeared and vmotion works again.

Now my problem is that I have 32 esx host and I don't want to have to restart all the and the fact that vmontion does not work I can not migrate the virtual machine between hosts.  Is there a way to force guests to rescan the channels fiber so that they will not see the deleted LUN more or is there another solution for this?

    Thanks in advance

It sounds as if you did not remove the VMFS datastore before unpresenting/remove the logic unit number!

There are different as KB to remove a datasbase in vCenter Server data store, but those who are for v4.x and I'm not sure if they apply to the v5.0 as well (e.g. http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1026661) maybe a restart of management on hosts agents will cancel the deleted LUN, have you tried this already?

  • PMC Fiber Channel card (IBM server)

I recently installed ESXi 5.5 on an IBM server. The server had a pre-existing HBA FIbre Channel 8 Gbps 4 port card. I'm looking for the correct drivers so that he can work with ESXi.

It is the chipset of the map: http://pmcs.com/products/storage/fibre_channel_controllers/pm8032/

Unfortunately I can't find no drivers of PMC or IBM, not only for ESXi but for anything. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

The driver that you have listed is not a SAS card a Fibre Channel HBA.

However, I just got a reply from support VMware and they said that this driver might work:

VMware ESXi 5.5 adp80xx driver Adaptec of PMC

    https://my.VMware.com/group/VMware/details?downloadGroup=DT-ESXI55-PMC-ADP80XX-11010475&ProductID=353#product_downloads

I have not tried yet, I have already installed an elderly low performing Emulex HBA, but as soon as I get some time I'll try the driver.

  • Using SAN Fiber Channel of SSD

    Hi all

I would like to know if anyone has used the SSD-Fibre channel SAN in the virtualization environment, if so I would like to have some feedback on performance and other factors that are both Pro & Con.

    Kind regards

    Sam

Some tables also make better use of than other SSDS.  3Par tables can move data between levels based on real models of IO observed.  I know that some EMC bays can use as a second layer of cache.

You should contact the supplier of your table to discuss.

(full disclosure - I work for 3PAR/HP.  If you want to talk about how our tables use SSD and are particularly suitable for VMware, feel free to DM me).

  • VCB and Fiber Channel without

    Hi all

I have an interesting problem, and I'm curious to know if anyone else has run into it...

I have a HP DL360 with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Backup Exec 12.5 and VCB 1.5.  The server is connected to a switch of fiber supporting a Compellent SAN.  VMFS volumes are presented to the DL360 ReadOnly and VCB works perfectly.

The question is in a reboot of the power of attorney.  The server is located in the Windows startup screen and never loads completely.  If I disconnect the fiber cable and reboot, it does so very well.  I can then reconnect it, scan the LUN and continue on as usual until the next time I restart the server.  I replaced the HBA already, so just try a different material (I have several of these boxes by flying over the building).

I know that this is not necessarily a problem with VMware, but I thought that maybe someone else ran in this at one point...

The problem is that your LUN is read-only.  Even if VCB should not be written on these discs, windows wants to be able to have this type of access, while it is coming.  So, it will try to open records in R/W mode, that will fail and causes Windows hang.  So, for a permanent solution, your VCB should have RW access to these LUNs.

  • UCS Fiber Channel FI for San switch wiring & config

My question is about the correct wiring & vSAN configuration by the UCS FI switch San (Cisco MDS).

Currently my wiring is as follows:

    Fi1 port 25 - SW1 port 3

    Fi1 port 26 - SW2 port 3

    Fi2 port 25 - SW1 port 4

    Fi2 port 26 - SW2 4 port

On the side of the switch San, our guys of storage configured vlan10 SW1 and SW2 as vlan20. For this reason, I was not able to have a vSAN by FI, I read is recommended, because the VLAN switch cross FIs. Now, when I created vHBAs I have 4 vHBAs per server, 2 by IFS by vlan if I want redundancy with a switch or a loss of FI.

Question: Is this the correct configuration on the side of the SAN switch? Do I actually create 4 vHBAs per server? I do not have my incorrect wiring & I should just be linking FI1 to SW1 on two ports & FI2 to SW2?

Help or advice would be appreciated!

    ~ Tara

    Hi Tara,

There are two ways of wiring of your SAN infrastructure.  It boils down to a design decision. Traditionally the SAN admins prefer to keep their separate/isolated tissue.  In this design THAT MDS-1 only connect to FI - A and MDS-2 would connect only to the FI - B.

Another option is to connect each MDS at each END.  This gives each FI SAN fabric access and allows to create double VSANS (that exists on each FI) rather than separate them.

You don't need four vHBAs by UCS Server - some adapters support no more than two in any case.   What you do is create two vHBA by the Service profile, each host will have access both to VSAN 10 and 20.  What you can do is to shift your tissue of vHBA while 1/2 access your Service VSAN 10 via FI - profiles and the other half access VSAN 10 FI - B.  This will help to distribute the load accordingly.

    E.g.

    First 1/2 of SPs

    vHBA0 - VSAN10 - fabric-A

    vHBA1 - VSAN20 - fabric-B

    1/2 second of SPs

    vHBA0 - VSAN20 - fabric-A

    vHBA1 - VSAN10 - fabric-B

As you can see a bit of a manual balancing can act.  The best scenario would be to isolate (re-cable) to your network SAN fabrics according to the traditional SAN design above.

    Kind regards

  • Fiber Channel - has not H:0 x D:0 x P:0 x 0 0 5

Hi everyone... running into a rather disconcerting problem that we seek to establish our 5.x ESXi hosts FC connectivity an IBM Gen2 XIV.

We will deploy it on two separate with identical hardware sites - record so that a site is running ESXi 5.0 and the other site is running ESXi 5.1.  Two configurations are a number of blades Dell with QLogic talk a Brocade in bladecenter switch ISL would go to our fibre "basic" environment that the XIV hangs directly.  Using WWPN base zoning and two fabrics (two core CF and two FC switches in each center of the blade).

Our problem is that on the site running ESXi 5.1 HBA renumerisations on an ESXi host making * long * term - when we had only a few LUN rescan took ~ 5 minutes... now that we have 20 or so Mon exposed we are up to 35-40 minutes for a new analysis complete.  This makes also host reboots take an excessive amount of time (which makes sense).  On the site running ESXi 5.0, everything is 'normal' - complete reanalysis in less than a minute.

The following errors can be observed in the vmkernel.log throughout the new analysis (and in fact at any time however the day - they seem to be more frequent during the rescan activity):

    (2013 03-29 T 20: 24:32.112Z cpu6:8198) ScsiDeviceIO: 2329: Cmd (0x4124003e56c0) 0x1a, CmdSN 0x73f5a of the world 0-dev 'eui.001738000f86088c' has no sense H:0 x 5 D:0 x P:0 x 0 possible 0-data: 0 x 0 0 x 0 0 x 0.

We have tickets open with the two VMware (which did us to our storage provider, IBM) and IBM.  IBM made a few suggestions (nothing major) that we put in place, but did not help.  From their point of view, our SAN environment seems perfect - no errors on ports, correct zoning, firmware update, etc.  We continue to work around the corner from support, but wanted to throw here in the case of question, someone has suggestions.

At this point, the next steps are more along the lines of fracture and conquer / trial and error.  With the new version of ESXi, there is also a newer version of the firmware on the QLogic there is the site running ESXi 5.0 (where there are no problems).  We can try to downgrade one of guests 5.1 to 5.0 to see if the problem follows.  Next steps to reproduce the problem to one operating system other than ESXi and then maybe a stand-alone host attached directly to the BC switch.  And so on and so forth.  Unfortunately, it's all PRD equipment, so everything must be planned and it'll take some time to get through all the trial and error.

Anything here jump out of anyone who could help us solve the problem of jumpstart?

I'll note that by looking at newspapers, * some * LUN seem to throw errors more frequently than others (and the number of errors is quite coherent throughout in each group).  I thought it maybe had to do with some of the LUNS that is detected as supporting "Hardware Acceleration" and others not (which is also confusing since all the LUNS on the same XIV - why wouldn't they take all over or does not support hardware acceleration?).

    Thanks in advance!

    Ray
