Using SAN Fiber Channel of SSD

Hi all

I would like to know if anyone has used the SSD-Fibre channel SAN in the virtualization environment, if so I would like to have some feedback on performance and other factors that are both Pro & Con.

Kind regards

Sam

Some tables also make better use of than other SSDS.  3Par tables can move data between levels based on real models of IO observed.  I know that some EMC bays can use as a second layer of cache.

You should contact the supplier of your table to discuss.

(full disclosure - I work for 3PAR/HP.  If you want to talk about how our tables use SSD and are particularly suitable for VMware, feel free to DM me).

Well, that's something to ask HP and EMC. Maybe with the next Firmware update of recommendation changes policy.

  • How to locate the fiber channel SAN disks on the ESX Server

    Hi all

    Please help on this

How to find and configure the fiber channel SAN disks on the ESX Server

    Concerning

    Vijay

Assuming that you have configured LUNS on your storage space itself you will need to ensure that the ID in the world of fiber HBA on the host ESX (you can see them registered against fiber HBA under storage adapters, WWID) are configured on the switch of fiber access (read and write).

In the VI Client connected to your ESX host, select the storage adapters tab and highlight the Fibre HBA. Right-click and select Rescan. If you have correctly configured the SAN and the Fibre switch, then the LUNS now appear under the fiber HBA. Go to storage and select Add storage. Follow the wizard through to add LUNS and VMFS format. Do this for each ESX host that you want to see the LUNS.

  • Two R810s, each with two 8Gb Fiber Channel HBA + MD3620F + MD1220

    Hi people.

I am planning an installation on this end, and I'm tender hand in the hope that the community can help me carry this all together.

To explain, I have two servers Dell PowerEdge R810, each with two 8 GB HBA Fibre Channel adapters.

I also have a Bay SAN of Dell PowerVault MD3620F 8 Gbps, with two controllers.

I also have a Dell PowerVault MD1220 DAS SAS Expander Bay.

I think to connects both R810 servers directly to the MD3620F, in order to consume all ports of four CF on the MD3620F. That is, one in each controller, from two HBAs in each server. (I can do this, or do I need a Fibre Channel switch? The MD3620F has 4 available ports, 2 per controller, so it would seem to be a natural configuration for only these two servers)

Then, I will link the MD1220 to the MD3620F, so that its readers are also accessible through the two R810s on the link of Fiber Channel 8 Gbps. (what is the process to connect a MD1220 to a MD3620F?)

    Thoughts, tips, suggestions?

    Thank you

  • Use of the COMPENSATOR for SSD

Can someone enlighten me on how to use the TRIM for my SSD function? According to Windows, the TRIM is enabled. What I need to know, is if it is a function that is called and executed automatically by the system? Or is this something that I need to manually call as a routine preventive maintenance (similar to the use of defragment)? Thanks for any advice.

Remember - this is a public forum so never post private information such as numbers of mail or telephone!

    Ideas:

    • You have problems with programs
    • Error messages
    • Recent changes to your computer
    • What you have already tried to solve the problem

Useful information for SSD users with NVIDIA motherboards:

Even if the Trim is enabled in Windows 7, mothers nForce NVIDIA cards do not send the order to the SSD TRIM.

You can uninstall the well Nvidia controller in Device Manager and install the controller IDE from Microsoft, that allows to send commands to COMPENSATION for SSDS.

Head to the Device Manager (menu start open, type Device Manager), and click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and you will see 3 Nvidia Serial ATA Controllers. Right click on one of them and click on 'Properties' and go to the tab 'Pilot' 'Update Driver '. Click on "Browse my computer", then "Let me choose". You will see the option to choose "Standard dual channel PCI IDE Controller". Click this button and click on 'Next' and let it install.

Do the same for the other Nvidia controllers in Device Manager, and then restart your system. After you have installed the controllers, you will be asked to restart again.

SSD will have now a slight performance gain with the TRIM command, and ordinary hard drives also have a slight increase as well.

I have an ASUS P5N - D 750i SLI motherboard and now my Trim actually works.

  • EtherChannel or fiber channel on 3508?

When you aggregate several fibers together on G 3508 GBIC, you configure as an etherchannel or fiber channel? I have looked around online for hours, but can not find what it mentioned anywhere.

EtherChannel (or link aggregate, or whatever you prefer).

Fibre channel is a data link protocol used in storage networks and a different protocol for ethernet.

  • 4.1 and vCenter ESX only allows to use 1 Fibre Channel LUNS

    Hello

I have 8 blades ESX 4.1 (build 348481) in a Cisco UCS 5108 chassis. Each blade has 2 x HBAs available. I also have a fiber channel storage array that is configured to provide 2 1.8 to LUN (for now and in the future).

When I go in vCenter and select one of the ESX servers under "Configuration"-> "Storage adapters"-> "Rescan all...» "each server detects the table (and several paths towards it) but only shows a single available LUNS (LUN 0) when 2 LUNS should be available (LUNS 0 and 1 logical unit number). See the image below.

Now, the thing that confuses me is that when I get on the command-line of the ESX via SSH server and run "esxcfg-mpath - b", I see a list of all the paths including the paths to the LUNS 0 and 1 logical unit number (see output below). Any ideas on why ESX and vCenter authorizes me to LUN 1?

Its because the table shows two LUNS have the same value of ID of Page 83, ESX both think you have 2 paths to the same LUN.  Paths multiple ESX driver uses the value of the ID of Page 83 to determine if 2 LUNS are the same device.

It was a problem with that code, that it resembles yours-based Solaris beginning according to the tables and other tables that used code based on Solaris pre-COMSTAR, as well as tables that use SCWIST.

There is really nothing you can do about it, because it is a bug in the software of the array (it shouldn't be exporting 2 LUNS different with the same ID value of Page 83 - it is a violation of the standard).

  • How does the predator AG3 used together the 128 GB ssd and hard drive 2 TB

I am considering buying a predator AG3 at Costco.  It comes with a 2 TB HDD and ssd 128 b.  How the system is used both in combination?  The ssd is only for boot?  Windows will be on the SSD.  The system will know to go on the HARD disk for programs not on the SSD drive?  I have no experience using a system with two disks of a different type.

SSD is usually used as installation of the OS and some heavy load programs (editing - audio - video)

HARD drive is used as data storage or install programs of large size (for most games).

System does not know where you want to install it that way, he asks during installation

    example of

    C:\Program Files\gamenameXYZ

You can tell the installer to use instead of C: on SSD HARD drive, so you will change from C to D (if your HARD drive is D: letter of the system)

    D:\Program Files\gamenameXYZ

  • UCS - san-port-channel on vpc

    Hello

I hope someone can help with this,

I have a Setup with 2 Nexus of 5548 connected via a link of vpc peers and a keepalive, these two nexus switch have a link of standard VPC to a 6500 upstream. It works fine,

Then, there are several native FC connections of the 5548 to of 6248. I know that there is the possibility to configure the channel port of CF on the UCS 2.0 but it is possible to link 5548 CF interfaces in a port channel san through a vpc between the nexus of 5548.

so, for example, I can port-channel which follows through a vpc or is a channel of port san, limited to the same nexus only switch ports.

    Fc1/31 & fc1/32 fabric sent to-> NX5K - 1 Port fc1/31 & NX5K - 2 Port fc1/32 (san port-channel 10 on a VPC)

    Fabric B fc1/31 & fc1/32 passed to-> NX5K - 1 Port fc1/32 & NXFK - 2 Port fc1/31 (san port-channel 11 on a VPC)

It is not possible. VPC is the only Layer 2 ethernet port channel. Port channel San cannot be built through vpc

  • Why windows.edb uses half my 512 GB SSD

I use Windows8 64 bit and my main HARD drive is a 512 GB of HARD drive.  This is the C drive and contains Windows itself over all my program files.  Data, including multimedia files, downloads etc. are on my drive D, a 2 TB HARD drive.  Relatively standard setup I think.

I find the windows.edb (in programdata\microsoft\searchdata\applications\windows) file is actually using 211 Gb of my SSD!  Exact number is 210 825.1 MB

He is half of the total use as I'm up to 40 GB freespace.  What is happening and what can I do about it without having to buy a larger HARD drive? !!

Go to settings / change PC settings / search...  There is a search button cleaning history.

I could also go to control panel / indexing / advanced... and press the Refresh button.

  • Can I download, activate, and use Adobe Cloud on 2 SSD on the SAME computer?

    Hello-

I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro with two separate disk with operating system drives bootable. A bootable disk drive is for general use.  This disc also contains the program Adobe cloud and all downloaded programs. The other (new) disk drive is ONLY dedicated to my audio and video programs and is kept clean and well optimized. However, I still have to download Adobe Cloud on it. So here's my question. Can I store and use Adobe cloud and all its programs on TWO startup disk drives located on the SAME computer? Obviously I can only boot to a hard drive at a time. (Eventually, I'll remove Adobe Cloud & programs on the bootable disc General once I am convinced that everything is installed and configured correctly on the second, devoted by car.)

    Thank you.

Number of activations of CC is based on the Machine ID & the Adobe ID, with which it is connected.

So, I think that if the machine ID is same & Adobe ID is same so you can use CC on even 2 SSD from the same computer.

It would be preferable to the expert opinion by contacting the Adobe Support via Contact Customer Care.

  • Anyone use SAN SSD for view (assessment xlr8r Whiptail)

    Hello

We look at our environment seen running on a SAN - specifically a device XLR8R Whiptail - 1.5 to SSD and it dedupes so we should easily be able to adapt our fast environment on it at great speed. However, it is not certified by VMware (even if they can show me those who use it successfully). It's Citrix certified well and results were impressive.

So, no matter who uses a Whiptail or have general comments on SSD SAN to see?

    See you soon

We have about 250 workstations running on replicas stored on disks SSD EqualLogic. We chose the SSD to eliminate any possibility of thunderstorms start because of disk bottlenecks. So far, we have seen no problems with them, and in fact, complete desktop computers, no cloned disc seem to run pretty instant. I have no knowledge of the device of Whiptail, well that sounds interesting with dedup functionality.

Do you have specific questions about SSDS?

  • UCS Fiber Channel FI for San switch wiring & config

My question is about the correct wiring & vSAN configuration by the UCS FI switch San (Cisco MDS).

Currently my wiring is as follows:

    Fi1 port 25 - SW1 port 3

    Fi1 port 26 - SW2 port 3

    Fi2 port 25 - SW1 port 4

    Fi2 port 26 - SW2 4 port

On the side of the switch San, our guys of storage configured vlan10 SW1 and SW2 as vlan20. For this reason, I was not able to have a vSAN by FI, I read is recommended, because the VLAN switch cross FIs. Now, when I created vHBAs I have 4 vHBAs per server, 2 by IFS by vlan if I want redundancy with a switch or a loss of FI.

Question: Is this the correct configuration on the side of the SAN switch? Do I actually create 4 vHBAs per server? I do not have my incorrect wiring & I should just be linking FI1 to SW1 on two ports & FI2 to SW2?

Help or advice would be appreciated!

    ~ Tara

    Hi Tara,

There are two ways of wiring of your SAN infrastructure.  It boils down to a design decision. Traditionally the SAN admins prefer to keep their separate/isolated tissue.  In this design THAT MDS-1 only connect to FI - A and MDS-2 would connect only to the FI - B.

Another option is to connect each MDS at each END.  This gives each FI SAN fabric access and allows to create double VSANS (that exists on each FI) rather than separate them.

You don't need four vHBAs by UCS Server - some adapters support no more than two in any case.   What you do is create two vHBA by the Service profile, each host will have access both to VSAN 10 and 20.  What you can do is to shift your tissue of vHBA while 1/2 access your Service VSAN 10 via FI - profiles and the other half access VSAN 10 FI - B.  This will help to distribute the load accordingly.

    E.g.

    First 1/2 of SPs

    vHBA0 - VSAN10 - fabric-A

    vHBA1 - VSAN20 - fabric-B

    1/2 second of SPs

    vHBA0 - VSAN20 - fabric-A

    vHBA1 - VSAN10 - fabric-B

As you can see a bit of a manual balancing can act.  The best scenario would be to isolate (re-cable) to your network SAN fabrics according to the traditional SAN design above.

    Kind regards

    Robert

  • Correct configuration for access Fiber Channel AAA

On the side of the ACS, I have cisco-av-pair = shell: roles = 'admin network' for the command set.

Groups in the switch are the remains of the previous configuration; However, I can't find the setting anywhere in the old ACS version 3.3.

  • Can satellite U50t-A10F - I use partition 7 GB on SSD for Ubuntu

    U50t-A10F has a SSD (32 GB) and a (750 GB) HARD drive.

The partition on the SSD drive information show 7 GB allocated and him remains unaffected.
Is this "unallocated" section used for something else, or I can use it to install part of the Ubuntu root file system.

I read that on Windows, the SSD is used as a form of cache extended using a falseraid implemented.

So, is it more a "unallocated" partition a part of and GPartEd simply do not correctly identify?
He even appears in the windows "Drive Manager".

    Hello

I can't say I don't know this model but I have seen and tested similar configurations on the U940 and U840.
The two had a HARD drive and an additional 32 GB of SSD used for Windows OS-specific reasons and no palpable by the user somehow normal.
Only a part of the DSS has been used and the rest was empty but totally in "empty."
It was due to the specificity of the soft raid configuration.

So as long as the raid - the installation program has been left as what, the SSD was not usable for anything other than swap/put into hibernation.

If you don't mind tthings "break", it's pretty easy to remove the raid configuration that will allow the use of the SSD...
However, be very catious! Although it is easy to remove the RAID seup, is not at all easy to restore it!
Reconstruction of the raid on the U840 and U940 need attention ASP which will cost money.
