Exchange 2007, P2V or migrate the mailboxes?

We have our Exchange 2007 running on two servers environment. A server is to access to the client and one for the letters/hub transport boxes. Months ago we did a P2V on the client access server and there work very well since. Next week we want to virtualize our box at the letters/hub transport server. I got two options:

1. perform a P2V with VMWare Converter making a cold conversion

2 set up a new server instance of the letters/hub Exchange 2007 under VMWare boxes and then migrate the mailboxes. It would involve a new installation of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise (64-bit) and a new installation of Exchange 2007 under VMWare and then using Microsoft tools to migrate the mailboxes.

Any thoughts on how we should go?

We run what ESX 3.5 fully patched. Our current box the letters/hub Exchange Server works on a blade in my IBM BladeCenter. We present this server with two LUNS of my Netapp FAS3020, one for the mail store and one for the log files. The disks we use currently in the Netapp are SATA. Monday we're going to bring online a new tray of fiber channel disk, and this will be where the data for our virtualized Exchange servers store will reside. In the end, it would be easier if the virtualized Exchange Server had the same IP address and the host name, otherwise I have some additional work to do with my ISP and my Barracuda Spam firewall. If we move to the second track, I don't know if this part will be delicate.

We have about 600 mailboxes and our database of mailboxes is about 90 GB in size

Migrate the mailboxes - fully phased in with little or no risk and roll back is a snap.

  • Exchange 2007: HA solution for the mailbox role

    Hello!

I'm a new infrastructure of Exchange 2007 on VMWare vSphere 4.1 design... My question is about HA for servers with the role of box mailbox.

I need to no (or little) downtime, so HA vSphere isn't enough... in design documents, I found two solutions:

-two VM clustered Windows 2008 (part of witness) + CSC Exchange (CCR)

-a single VM with vSphere active FT

Which is the best solution in your opinion / experience? I would use FT but I'm worried by the limit of 1vCPU.

    Thank you!

The amount of required CPU will be directly linked the number of mailboxes, that you intend to host the mailbox profile.  A single vCPU should be plenty for up to the mailbox of 750-1000 of a medium profile (100 messages sent/rec'd by day).  The MS Exchange team has a calculator that you can use to determine the exact cpu and memory required for your configuration (http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/07/05/445802.aspx).

EMC has conducted trials of a unique virtual machine running 1000 mailboxes and protected by FT (http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/technical-documentation/h6237-virtual-infrastructure-clariion-cx4-120-vsphere-reference-architecture.pdf).

Which solution is right for you will depend on what you are trying to protect and how much you want to spend on the solution.  FT will be work very well protect against hardware failures, not need business licenses and have no service interruptions but as failover, is limited to a single vCPU.  Exchange 2007 CCR will protect against hardware and software failures (awareness of the Exchange), but you will have to maintain two virtual machines / systemes systems operating, requires twice the storage and requires licensing of the company.

  • ESXi 5.1 - Exchange 2007 - file Page memory and CPU allocation

I'm currently migrating a class Cluster CSC Exchange 2007 running on vmware on windows 2008, 2003.  It is also a SCC Cluster.  I followed all of the vmware and MS best practices, but not sure of one thing IM is the size of memory and CPU allocation page/swap file.  I have 5 Esxi hosts and each is running only Exchange 2007 comments according to vmware and MS recommendations when you use the Clustering of CSC.

Each host has 2 CPUs to 6 cores per processor and 48 gb of Ram and that each host will have only a guest, would like to send it to the guest.  I read somewhere that it is recommended this page exchange 2007 memory size + 10 mb file.  Do I really need to get the page to the size of the file?  250 GB of disk space is a lot for swap files! IM also not sure what to set the allocation processor too.  If someone can point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

    Thank you

    Hi dlargeit,

First of all, off - welcome to the VMTN forums!

I'm with Josh26 I've ever seen any recommendations indicating that when a CCS cluster virtualization virtual machine by host is taken in charge. It is recommended to keep only a single node SCC by host (which is true for all virtual clusters or technologies like Exchange CSC/CCR/DAG), but there is nothing specific regarding the keep only a single virtual machine by host.

On the file page, you are actually right on that.  For Exchange 2007, the paging file must be on the amount of memory configured as well as 10 MB to account for overhead costs of the kernel.  It is recommended by Microsoft and it is planned to provide enough space page Exchange should exchange more provide the necessary overhead if meet you a server failure and need to create a complete memory dump.

You can find this recommendation here: http://technet.microsoft.com/library/aa996719 (EXCHG.80) .aspx

In terms of CPU allocation, which should really be made according to your individual needs rather than just give all the resources the VM on the ESXi host.  Microsoft lists the maximum recommended for processor resources (Planning Processor Configurations: Exchange 2007 help) and it says that 12 hearts is the maximum for mailbox or Hub Transport box.  Is your really big enough environment need a lot of CPU resources?  Why not start small and increase it if necessary?

You are in control of your own destiny in some of these configurations.  If you know the recommended page file size is 10 MB of RAM +, do not give the server more RAM is really needed, or you will have to pay for it in the consumed disk space to host the pagefile.  See the guide to memory resources (Planning Memory Configurations: Exchange 2007 help) to understand the maximum rates of memory for Exchange.  You will see that the maximum memory is 32GB, so there are very few reasons to assign all 48GB of RAM on your server, if it can even use.

In short, the size of the server based on the real needs and I am confident, that you will have a virtualized Exchange system that performs as well as physical.

  • Disable the mailbox exchange 2007

    Hi all

I had the requirement not only disabled accounts in Active Directory but to disable their mailbox as well. So they should not be able to receive messages so that they are unable to access their mailbox.

I'm a lucky guy, so I found this entry in the changelog, regarding Patch 10 for 8.0:
"21203 exchange 2007: to disable a mailbox without deleting AD user.

This looks exactly like the solution to my requirement, but unfortunately I did not find any documentation? It is so nice that I am able to disable a mailbox, but HOW can I do this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    CU,
    Patrick.

    Hi Patrick.

I think that what you want to do is: discover the 'RecipientType' for users in questions and change: 'UserMailbox' to 'user '. This should clear the mailbox without deleting the user from the AD. It's the change functionality / caused by the bug # 21203.

You will need 7.1.1.18 or later 8.0.0.10 or later version, or later version 8.1.0.4.

    Kind regards
    Alex

  • Exchange 2007 Cluster CSC - P2V

We are currently running two physical servers to Exchange 2007 in a SCC cluster.  The Exchange mailbox DB are housed on a LUN in a SAN EMC.  Currently, the two physical servers have access to the LUN, but only the active node of SCC will go up the disks.

We would like to P2V servers on our farm in VMWare (ESX and vSphere 4).  The SCC cluster has too many pieces attached to it (certificates, Outlook clients connect on behalf of the cluster, etc.) so we don't want to set up a new server and then migrate the data.  Are there special aspects we need to know?  Most of the documentation I've found is CCR and SCC No.

In the past, we ran into issues when more than WIndows servers had access to a SAN logical unit number.  In fact, this caused the corruption of our Exchange 2007 databases when firstly, we migrated from Exchange 2003 to 2007.  We will encounter this problem even if our ESX farm all have access to this LUN?  This is necessary because we also run vMotion.

    Thank you.

Yes, the new virtual machine will be the 3rd member of cluster, not the server of the mailbox 3rd (just to be clear).  In order for this virtual machine be eligible, you need to make data visible LUNS per ESX host.  Once added to the cluster, you will be able to move the EVS (your mailbox server resources) for the virtual machine (3rd member of the cluster).  Note, all in are not normally the case, I've seen a situation when the VM could not meet the disks shared online.  To fix this I had to turn off the physical host computers having locks on shared disks.  Once I turned off the physical nodes I could put the Exchange virtual server online and then put on the physical nodes and freely moving resources between nodes.

If you look at the guide I linked in the previous post, you will see the section that describes the parameters to create a cluster of physical to virtual.  Once the virtual is online and you have confirmed that the Exchange virtual server can freely migrate from the physical to the virtual nodes you can expel one of the physical nodes.  You can then set up a second virtual machine and add it to the cluster.  Once you have verified that the Exchange virtual server can migrate freely between the two virtual nodes you can then remove the remaining physical node and you end up with a virtual two-node cluster.  Also, note that you cannot have two nodes in a cluster failover windows running on vSphere.

    I hope this helps.

  • Cluster of P2V existing Windows 2003 two nodes exchange 2007

    Hello

I want to know how I can create a cluster of the P2v of my production windows node cluster on a host two unique esx4i. It is only for purposes of laboratory and test. The reason why I've done a P2v is I want to imitate my production environment, and as production data.

I've done a p2v of my node Exchange 2007 cluster two production Windows 2003 64-bit.  How can I reconfigure disks (quorum, data) for the cluster?

I've seen a lot of e of documents telling me to remove the discs and re create, but I want to keep the data.

I would like to know if someone has done with success the P2v cluster.

    Please notify.

I understand you want to keep the data - this guide will give you necessary for nodes in vm configurations and storage relavent - if you want to keep the two nodes in the cluster on separate from ESX boxes, then you will need to maintain a quorum and the shared data on the physical SAN LUNS and allows to connect to storage RDM - if they all exist on the same ESX Server I shute evrything down - P@V primary node with the disk data and shared quorum, then P2V system disk of secondary nodes - in both cases follow the configurations described in the guides and you should be good to go-

  • Delete the mailbox Exchange special letters is not get fired

    Hello
I use the custom to Exchange 2010 supply adapter. All custom tasks and tasks such as user to disable by default, allow the user properly. But delete the workflow user does not work. All enable, disable, and delete jobs are mapped to the system card-tccomplete task. When I delete the user account in the IDM, then AD gets deleted (revoked) successfully but Exchange still shows as active (provisioning). The status of all jobs, in the terms of trade, shows Canceled. I don't see my task deleting user in the context of resource Exchange but all other tasks changes status to cancelled.
A few days before it was working fine, but today is not.

Am I missing any configuration of the task? Please help me in this regard.

    Thank you.

The task to remove is triggered off the coast of the tab Undo/recovery jobs. This is usually set to the task of creating a user. Check to see that your task to remove the mailbox exists here. If it does, then open your diagnostic log and check the logs at the time where you performed the deletion and you should be able to see the question.

  • Exchange 2007 SP3 increase in message size does not work why?

I have a windows server 2008R2 with Exchange 2007 SP3, currently the maximum to send and receive message size is 30 MB. My MD needs to send an email which is 60 MB.

I went through and changed all the parameters in which I expect to do. If I run best practices, it signals that the Send connectors and the receiver are high at 60 MB. Fine, I said.

I open Microsoft Outlook 2007 and try to attach several files to 5 MB per element. Outlook has that attachments are great when I get to 29 MB.

This is only a temporary job, so not worried, but can, my concern is what's wrong.

We had Exchange 2007 running on windows 2008R2 who say it cannot be done while we had a server crash. I had to transfer exchange on a temp server. I've migrated on the main server which is brand new but this time, I installed Excahnge 2007SP3. I don't know if this migration has nothing to do with it.

    Any help would be great

  • Migration of mailboxes unity 4.0 (3) Subscriber

I have a question about migration offbox mailboxes of current subscribers the unit of an Exchange 2000 Server to another server Exchange 2003 by using the same Alias Exchange. The two exchange servers are under the same ad as the unity server.

In each existing subscriber account the unit, the unit stores its Exchange Alias matching the location of the server and the Exchange mail store. I would like to know that during the migration or spend these Exchange accounts of a mail store from one Exchange Server to another e-mail from another Exchange Server store, how can update us of existing subscriber accounts Exchange server and mailstore information without deleting the existing account and import the account using the Exchange account using the new Exchange Server with new mailstore? (The Subscriber always uses the same AD user account and even Exchange Alias all right)

    Thank you

    Hi Raymond,

You are migrating users from one constituency to another normally, then you will need to re-run the configuration Assistant message store to point the unit to use as a partner Exchange Server 2003 server.
