Expand the disk while online server?

Running vSphere 5.5, VM ESXi 5.1 and later (VM version 9) running 2 k 8 R2.

Can I extend a no system on iSCSI disk without having to restart the server?

Yes. as windows 2008 and especially the extension of support to the disk without rebooting. So go ahead and do it.

  • How can I safely expand the vdisk my vCenter server located on?

    Hey all, I'm a fairly recent convert to VMware and I really like what it has to offer. I'm still learning about it even after my class a week about a month ago. My current dilemma is that my vCenter server is a virtual machine sitting on a 120 GB vdisk but when I go to the summary page for this virtual machine storage usage is 124,17 GB. I was going to close vCenter and vSphere Client software to increase the size of the disk, but I was afraid that that affect my running virtual machines? I tried Googling and couldn't find anything definitive either way. So, can I safely stop vCenter and increase its size to drive this way? If this is not the case, what is the best way to increase the size of the disk?

    Thank you

    Joe B

    Assuming that it is a virtual Windows machine (vCenter Server is also available as a Linux-based appliance) you don't need to shut down the guest operating system. Just resize the virtual disk of the virtual machine in the virtual machine settings and then increase the size of the partition in the disk of the guest Manager.

    BTW. used 124 GB drive space intended to trade files of the virtual machine, and a few configuration files.

  • expand the disk error using the cmdlet set-hard drive

    Hello

    I will try to extend a vmdk with the command set-hard drive the rcli installed to my latptop througth, but I'm getting some sort of syntax error, I think.

    I connect the vCenter and can run commands very well...

    I use the following commands in the process:

    PS C:\ > get-disk hard-vm xxx_teco

    CapacityKB persistence Filename
    ----------                     -----------                                                    --------
    persistent 31457280 [brjgs163_Storage1_Local] xxx_teco/xxx_teco.vmdk
    persistent 5242880 [brjgs163_Storage1_Local] xxx_teco/xxx_teco_1.vmdk

    then:

    PS C:\ > set-hard drive - vm xxx_teco - hard drive ' [brjgs163_Storage1_Local] xxx_teco/xxx_teco_1.vmdk "-capcity 10485760

    then, got the error:

    I have tryied somehow different to specify the disk hard but without success... always get these errors of messages...

    any help, please.

    The cmdlet Set-HDD wants something, such that returned by Get - hard drive to the hard drive setting.

    Easier is to use the pipeline (see also example 1 on the hard disk-Get help).

    get-disk hard - vm xxx_teco | where {$_.} {Name - eq ' Hard disk 2 "} | whole-disk hard-capcity 10485760

  • You can expand a disk on a Linux VM online?

    On Windows since at least 2008, you have been able to expand a disk on a VMware virtual machine (or any other virtualization/SAN LUNS), then expand the disk/volume in Windows without needing downtime and maintenance.

    We have SLES 11 VM with ext3 partitions in their LUNs.  I'm sure there must be a way to do this.  Is this possible with ext3, do I have to use LVM, ext4, btrfs, I don't know.  I keep looking for it on the web and as soon as I think I found the answer there is a "now reboot the virtual machine" in there.  Sorry I don't have much Linux live as I do Windows.

    http://www.timoudin.com/2009/12/19/resize-a-non-LVM-ext3-partition-after-increasing-size-of-virtual-drive/

    This could work, but its not recommended without a reboot.

  • Need to create and add RDM disk while calling reconfigVM

    Hello

    Now I create RDM disk help createdisk method and then added the disk of the virtual machine by using the reconfigvm method using vsphere sdk in c# but I need to create and add the disk while calling the reconfigVM only. I searched and found a code as example.

    diskSpec.operation = VirtualDeviceConfigSpecOperation.add;
    diskSpec.fileOperation = VirtualDeviceConfigSpecFileOperation.create;

    ". According to my understanding, vmdk file can create while adding the LUNs as disk RDM using both add and create function, but then I try these i couldn't succeed. If anyone has tried what can you share your code or suggestions please.

    Thank you

    Vijaya

    Vijaya,

    I guess that how you specify the devicename property is invalid. You just need to assign the devicename you recovered in QueryConfigTarget to the devicename of the backup file.  Please refer below snippet for adding disk:

    Request for more information on specific devices that can be used to back up virtual devices

    CTAR ConfigTarget = cb.getConnection () .getService () .queryConfigTarget (envBrow, hostmor);

    VirtualMachineScsiDiskDeviceInfo [] arrSCSILun = (VirtualMachineScsiDiskDeviceInfo []) ctar.getScsiDisk ();

    HostScsiDisk drive;

    If (arrSCSILun! = null) {}

    for (int i = 0; i)< arrscsilun.length;="" i++)="">

    disc = arrSCSILun [i] .getDisk ();

    If (disk == null) {}

    continue;

    }

    else {}

    deviceName = arrSCSILun [i] .getDisk () .getCanonicalName ();

    }

    Add a disk
    VirtualDeviceConfigSpec diskSpec = new VirtualDeviceConfigSpec();

    diskSpec.setFileOperation (VirtualDeviceConfigSpecFileOperation.create);
    diskSpec.setOperation (VirtualDeviceConfigSpecOperation.add);

    VirtualDisk disk = new VirtualDisk();
    VirtualDiskRawDiskMappingVer1BackingInfo diskfileBacking = new VirtualDiskRawDiskMappingVer1BackingInfo();

    diskfileBacking.setFileName("");
    diskfileBacking.setDiskMode ("persist");
    diskfileBacking.setCompatibilityMode ("physicalMode");
       diskfileBacking.setDeviceName (deviceName); It's the devicename you got above
    System.out.println ("DeviceName assigned is" + deviceName);
    disk.setKey (new Integer(-101));
    disk.setControllerKey (new Integer (diskCtlrKey));
    disk.setUnitNumber (new Integer (0));
    disk.setBacking (diskfileBacking);
    disk.setCapacityInKB (1024);

    diskSpec.setDevice (disk);

    People,

    Hello. I use 3 Player VM and Guest OS Windows Server 2003. The host OS is Windows 7. I need to increase the size of the VM disk, so who can install several systems in the guest OS. If something bad happens during the expansion of the size of the virtual disk, the guest operating system and its Applications will not work. First of all, if something bad happens during the expansion of the size of the virtual disk, the guest operating system and its Applications do not work. Can I just delete the folder 'VirtualMachine' in the host operating system?

    Secondly, the problem of the first question does not affect files in the physical hard disk to host operating system?

    Yes.

    That's right, as long as you have not added and other virtual disks of different folders on the host of the virtual machine, you can probably did not.

    After developing the size of the virtual disk, you must also change the size of the partition in the guest operating system.

  • How to expand your virtual hard disk while host hard disk space is not enough?

    People,

    Hello. I use VM Player 3. My host computer is Windows 7 and VM is Oracle Linux 5. I need to expand the virtual hard drive Oracle Linux 5 from 100 GB to 150 GB. When I click on VM > Settings > hard drive > utilities > expands...

    The error message:

    There is not enough space on the file system for the selected operation.

    To after my understanding, we have enough room to store the VHD original more expanded VHD.

    This means that the free space on the host needs to be 100 GB + 150 = 250 GB

    The total size of the hard disk of the Windows 7 host is 284 GB. The VM already occupies 100 GB of 284 GB. The maximum free space is 184 GB less space and boot OS. This means that I can't develop the 100 GB to 150 GB VHD.

    But I have to expand the virtual hard disk! I don't know if there are other ways to expand the virtual hard disk.

    My question is:

    Folk understand some ways to expand the virtual hard drive ranging from 100 GB to 150 GB drive hard host is only 284 GB?

    Thanks in advance.

    You explained, it is the behavior with monolithic virtual disks, which is a unique hard file. Because the file requires more space for its metadata at the beginning of the file, all the blocks of data must be copied to a new file. With the format of sparse file 2 GB virtual disks can be extended without the need to copy the data into a new file hard, because each the hard contains its own metadata. In case you don't have at least ~ 100GB of disk space you can use vmware-vdiskmanager convert/clone the virtual drive command line utility in a format of 2 GB sparse file, delete the original virtual disk (after saving), then use vmware-vdiskmanager again to rename the new virtual disk to the old name. Once done, you will be able to expand the virtual disk as required.

  • Expanded the bad virtual disk but not Guest OS - Shrink?

    Not quite another question generic "shrink the VMDK.

    I accidentally spread the bad virtual disk in vCenter 725 GB to 1 TB. Fortunately, I realized that until I expanded the partition to use the new space in Windows. Is it possible to reclaim that space? In the virtual machine settings, I have the options of arrow to "reduce" the size down, but I'm not sure on the impact at the prompt to do. Certainly if the guest has not been extended to consume this space then it should be recoverable?

    as you're talking about: the option arrow in the virtual machine settings

    This does not leave you reduce (Shrink) the size of the virtual disk, which has already been strengthened. This option is useful in the case when we say you went into settings of the virtual machine, the disk size increased from 10 to 20 GB, but not yet committed that change and you want to return to 15 you can then use this arrow to do.

    Please visit following KB, is the answer to your question, use VMware converter.

  • Cannot expand the size of the disk

    I'm coverting a VMware machine that created via VMWare Player 3.0. It's a Windows 7 VM 15 GB. I made this ttimes number but for some reason any on this virtual machine I don't have the option to extend the size of the disk. Usually, there is a fall downwards according to the size of the disk where I enter the number to Go to the new size of disk, but there is no list drop-down option. Currently there are 1.5 free space on this virtual machine. Ideas?

    the exapnd utility will expand the HARD disk you selected, not add another drive.  In Windows, you have unallocated space at the end of the partition, you can then use disk management to extend the volume.

    Is the drive in FAT32 formatted accidentally? If so, you can only restore up to 4 GB for a single file. Try to make a TIFF sequence instead. Tip of litte - press the LZW compression checkbox in the options for a lossless compression format, this allows you to keep the path file size down.

  • Expand the C partition in Windows Server (not not using diskpart)

    Hi Experts,

    I have an of Windows 2003 virtual machine that has a 12 GB C drive only. I need to decompress. I know that we can use diskpart to extend the drive, but the problem is here that the hard disk is divided into two partitions (C and D), because of which even if I increase the size under the ESX, I don't then expand in Windows using diskpart as it is said there are two partitions on the same disk. Hello!

    Normally, you will only be able to extend the partition that has free space immediately after it on the drive (and this is where the free space is added when you expand the virtual disk). So, if your disk layout is like this:

    DISC

    (block0 |) Partition1... | Partition2... | Free space.........................................| last block)

    you will only be able to extend Partition2

    This is why it is recommended to create a partition per virtual disk.

    In your case, I'd watch if it is possible to:

    (1) add another virtual disk to the virtual computer and create a partition (say f :)

    (2) move the data from the disk D: (Partition2) the newly created disk (if the existing D: holds a swap file, you need to create a swap file on the new drive, and then delete D: pagefile in computer properties > Advanced tab > performance settings > Advanced tab)

    (3) change the drive letters in the Disk Manager (change the drive letter to D: in a free r: one, for example, then change to your new drive d :) drive letter)

    (4) possibly restart the virtual machine to see if all the services are running as expected

    (5) use of the Disk Manager to delete the Partition2 (after this your vdisk that holds Partition1 should have lots of free space immediately after Partition1 and it is expandable)

    (6) use diskpart, extpart or any other utility to develop the Partition1

    (7) avoid creating multiple partitions on virtual disks in the future

    I hope this helps.

  • Move the disks from 4.0 to 4.1 Server

    Hello all-

    I was wondering what to expect with my migration to a new server esxi 4.1. I am running esxi 4.0 with two disks of data with all my s vm in data warehouses. The 4.1 server is built and ready to go, can I just physically move the disks to the new server and it will recognize that they are already setup with data on board or he'll want to reformat the discs when he sees them? I hope that it leaves everything intact and I can just reattach the existing virtual machine. I have all the vm saved in any case to another location on the drive just in case.

    Thanks for any idea that you can provide.

    John

    It should work exactly as you described.

    After setting the record, ESXi should be viewed as VMFS in "Configuration" data warehouses--> "of storage. All you have to do is to add virtual machines to inventory, by right clicking on the vmx files.

    André

    EDIT: I guess that you have single disks. If you have a RAID configuration, ESX hosts must see logical volumes after reboot.
