Expand the C partition in Windows Server (not not using diskpart)

Hi Experts,

I have an of Windows 2003 virtual machine that has a 12 GB C drive only. I need to decompress. I know that we can use diskpart to extend the drive, but the problem is here that the hard disk is divided into two partitions (C and D), because of which even if I increase the size under the ESX, I don't then expand in Windows using diskpart as it is said there are two partitions on the same disk. Someone help me!

Hello!

Normally, you will only be able to extend the partition that has free space immediately after it on the drive (and this is where the free space is added when you expand the virtual disk). So, if your disk layout is like this:

DISC

(block0 |) Partition1... | Partition2... | Free space.........................................| last block)

you will only be able to extend Partition2

This is why it is recommended to create a partition per virtual disk.

In your case, I'd watch if it is possible to:

(1) add another virtual disk to the virtual computer and create a partition (say f :)

(2) move the data from the disk D: (Partition2) the newly created disk (if the existing D: holds a swap file, you need to create a swap file on the new drive, and then delete D: pagefile in computer properties > Advanced tab > performance settings > Advanced tab)

(3) change the drive letters in the Disk Manager (change the drive letter to D: in a free r: one, for example, then change to your new drive d :) drive letter)

(4) possibly restart the virtual machine to see if all the services are running as expected

(5) use of the Disk Manager to delete the Partition2 (after this your vdisk that holds Partition1 should have lots of free space immediately after Partition1 and it is expandable)

(6) use diskpart, extpart or any other utility to develop the Partition1

(7) avoid creating multiple partitions on virtual disks in the future

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's showing as unallocated, but because it's a system (C:\) drive I can't extend it by using Diskpart utility I can do for other readers.

There are different ways to do this for Win 2003 (easy in 2008, has expanded in the GUI). For Windows 2003 you could close the virtual machine, get the VMDK on another Windows Server, use Diskpart or another tool to extend partition here - since it is not the system partition / boot. Then mount it in the original virtual machine.

Official VMware training, they recommend a free tool from Dell, called extpart.exe. Simple tool command-line which allows to extend the system partition / boot when the virtual machine is running. Check it out and try if you wish.

It is on the FTP of Dells site at ftp.dell.com/app, any logon not required.

  • cannot expand the c partition in unallocated space

I have a HP Pavilion dv5224nr laptop running Windows XP.  I've been low on disk space, so I came on this forum to find out how to remove the recovery partition, since I have the recovery CD from HP.  Now that I deleted the partition through disk management, it only allows me to expand the C partition in unallocated space left by removing the partition D.  "Extend partition" is not an option in the menu when I right click.  I also tried going through the "diskpart" command prompt, select the volume and him asking to "extend".  I received a message that it was unable to extend the volume.  How can I recover the 12 GB of space on my C drive?  Thank you.

I downloaded a free utility called Easeus Partition Master and it worked very well for resizing my partition C.  I also used explores the function to watch the 1 gig unknown partition and it wasn't empty, so I left it alone.  Thanks for your help!

  • Hard drive to expand the C partition

    Hello

How to expand the C partition on the hard drive. For the C partition option is grayed out in Disk Management extend it.

    Dell Inspiron 1564, Windows 7.

    Photo of attached disk management.

For some reason I didn't your answers on your other thread.

You can only expand in the unpartitioned space on the right of the partition that you extend. You deleted the D: drive, but the space is not the unpartitioned space. Because you can have a maximum of 4 partitions on an MBR disk, the last of them is typically created as an extended Partition, that allows you to create additional logical drives inside. It is a goofy configuration if this is how he got from Dell. You must also delete F:, then delete the Extended Partition. Then you can extend C: you have unpartitioned space where was the Extended Partition.

  • Impossible to expand the C partition after the reduction of the DATA Partition

I dropped my DATA partition to increase the size of my partition Vista (c), but I can't extend C: (as far I understand it) because it is more than a single partition to the right.

I can reformat the free space and I have another partition, but I would rather extend C:
Is there a way to do this?

Also, I wrote my recovery disks, but the DATA partition again should he be there? Also if you do not delete the DATA partition and that do it again you?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

The problem is that your data partition was created after the C partition.

If you reduce a partition, the free space appears after the shrivelled partition and so you can not add this free space to the other partition of C that is placed behind the partition Data (D).

The only way to expand the C partition is to delete the partition D and then to add this free space to the C partition, but I wouldn't delete the DATA partition because it has a record of recovery that is necessary to create the Toshiba Recovery DVD

But if you have already created a Toshiba Recovery DVD then the deletion of the DATA partition is not a serious problem because the Toshiba Recovery disk would format the whole HARD drive and would create 3 new partitions (hidden WinRE partition, partition C system, DATA partition).

  • the installation program could not use the existing partition because it does not contain the required free space

I google search for the solution but could not find so I install the windows partition 8 on my system reserved.

    Hi Lawren,

Thank you for your update on the issue.

In this case, you may need to format the entire disk, clean the partitions and reinstall new windows as suggested before. However, I suggest you to contact local support for the backup of your data from hard disk partitions.

  • How to activate the Internet connection on Windows Server 2003 is installed in the virtual machine in VMware Workstation 8?

I have Windows Server 2003 is installed on a virtual machine in VMware Workstation 8. I need it to learn and practice the use of the Active Directory. I've also set up 3 Windows XP workstations connect to it, which means that they can communicate with Server 2003. What is lacking is the Internet connection on all of them. When I run ping 8.8.8.8 in one of these virtual machines, I get, 'Destination host unreachable.'

I'm not sure, what if the problem comes from the settings in Windows or the settings of the virtual machine.

    Can someone help me?

Thank you, guys. I was finally able to put in place. It was quite an ordeal to deal with IP addresses and virtual networks. Here's how I did (in the screenshots) in case someone else needs it.

(I also confess that it is perhaps one of the ways to implement. Maybe there is an easier way to do it with DHCP...)

    1. in your computer where is installed VMware Workstation 8 begin the "Virtual Network Editor." It is located in the folder of installation of VMware Workstation. And implement the network following (VMnet2 in my case):

2 then in VMware Workstation itself in the virtual machine when Windows Server 2003 is installed set up two network as connections:

This one is for external access to the Internet:

And this one for intranet communications AD:

    3. then in the machine virtual de Windows Server 2003 set up what follows for two network adapters:

    For Internet access:

Then, you need allow this connection to share:

And then for the ad access to workstations (ensure that the static IP address is in the range specified in the virtual network over VMnet2 network editor). I've also set up DNS to 127.0.0.1 because I installed on this Windows 2003 DNS server:

    4. from the Windows 2003 VM try ping 8.8.8.8. It should work now.

    5. go to each workstation, in my case, Windows XP, each in its own virtual machine and set up the network in the VMware Workstation as follows:

    6. then in the virtual machine, configure the network connection for Windows XP workstation. Don't forget to assign a new static IP address for each workstation, which not coinside with IP of the domain (this IP address must come from the range specified in the virtual network over VMnet2 network editor):

    7. try first ping the domain, in my case ping 192.168.237.128. And then Internet, ping 8.8.8.8. The two should work!

    Continue with steps [5-7].

  • Defragment the exFAT partitions in Windows 7 Ultimate x 64

    Hello

Is it possible to defragment the exFAT partitions in Windows 7?

    I have a 1 TB hard drive, acting as a storage/backup drive.

(average file size is greater than 2 GB)

It is formatted as a single partition. And formatted exFAT file system.

But after filling the disk with data, moving, deleting files, performance declined, which is normal and would require a simple defragmentation.

The problem is simple - how defragment my partition exFAT?

    Hello

Unfortunately, you won't be able to defragment a disk with a partition exFAT.
