Experience of Vista with a Satellite U200-115

Hi.Just a little of my experience since the upgrade to Vista, in the hope of an orientation.
U200 only bought it 4 months with XP Pro loaded. used Express upgrade to Vista.
I think that I loaded the new Bios & drivers ok, but very fast, everything works no more. I could not repair the Vista installation had to install on my second partition. This led to 2 choices of vista boot up which I just discovered how to stop.
Vista looks nice but...
I keep losing my optical drive, I have to uninstall and then restart your computer.
It crashes IE with the program image. Firefox blinking on the screen like crazy. Can only stop with the prolonged use of button / stop.
Utility flashcards... what that all about?
recovery when opening lid, slow, maybe needs to restart.
Wireless, can make his choice if there is or is not all available networks... reboot again.
I wonder if I can use the recovery cd to put XP on the original OS partition and back to Vista next year!
Any comments appreciated

HM, it sounds not very positive, but the crazy thing is, I have to admit your 'report' it s not pilot stuff, plus the operating system itself. I think that if they 'closed' with their OS werenâ´t they hadn´t so much probs thereafter. The manufacturer can provide some proper drivers and the system could be running.

Thus, we can have some faith when they release SP1 for Vista. I think a lot of people waiting for MS.  :) Me too...

Welcome them

  • Incorrect operating system on the new recovery disc - Satellite U200-115

I have a Toshiba Satellite U200-115 model No.PLUA0E - 0970372N which ran from Windows XP Professional. Stupidly, I decided to reformat the hard disk to clean. When I got to use my original recovery disk I found that it was badly scratched and unusable. I just got a new recovery disk, but he installed Windows Vista not what the machine came with.

It says "this copy of Windows is not genuine" and that the "product key is invalid for activation. I don't have a product key for Vista only for XP Professional!

Is your laptop comes with WXP Pro. In my opinion, you should communicate with Bertelsmann (https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx) and ask what is the problem.

  • Satellite U200-115 - CD Rom error - cannot activate windows player

    Hello world

I am having some problems with my player on my Satellite U200-115 DVD burner.
It works very intermittently, and everytime I turn on the machine, the first notice I get is 'CD error' even if there is no disk in the drive.
I can not activate the drive of windows (icon in the system tray).
There is the odd occasion when the drive does not work in windows but it's so rare that I don't remember the last time (I think it was in Nov 08).

I want to restore the system as I get a lot of windows, icons of file instead of the appropriate icons for images for example pdf, doc, etc., but am worried that the reader will not read the disc or will stop working during the recovery process.

    Any ideas would be welcome.

    Best wishes

    Nick

If there s a problem with the player software won't stop working during the recovery procedure.
That you get a CD-ROM error in Windows?

You can try to boot from a Linux boot disk. If it works, it would be a software issue and not a hardware problem.

  • Satellite U200-115: how to reach the return key on the keyboard

    Hello.

I recently bought a Satellite U200-115 and have a quick question. I was typing earlier today and I accidentally eliminated one of the keys to its position. I then spent the last 3 hours trying to attach it to the laptop.

I was just wondering if the mechanism of how the keys are placed on the base of the keyboard has a special technique to be applied on the keyboard?

The key is divided into three parts, and it looks like not to I broke one of these parts but im having rear attatching boredom. I would be grateful for any help you are able to provide.

    Michael

    Hello

AFAIK there is no special technique. You simply press plastic key. It will click and the key will be placed as before.

    Hello

Satellite U200 is known to me, but I didn t try to install Vista on this laptop. Have you installed drivers all listed on the download page of Toshiba for Vista?

  • Upgrade Vista on the Satellite U200-126

I would like to tell my experience with the updated BIOS with my Satellite PRO U200-126.
I bought this computer last year, this is a Core Duo, not a Core 2 Duo processor. It has been working perfectly with Windows XP Professional.
All my problems began when I tried to upgrade to Windows Vista.

I bought an upgrade of RAM, because my computer has only 512 MB. I removed the keyboard and installed the additional memory module... It is ok. I bought a new SATA hard drive 160 GB, to install the new operating system on it. I bought Win Vista DVD. I downloaded all compatible applications and drivers from the TOSHIBA web site. I put the upgrade, so I started.

The first step was to upgrade the BIOS. My U200 had BIOS version 1.40 installed, and I flashed the computer with version 3.40 available in time on the Web from Toshiba website. I installed the new hard drive and started a new installation of Windows Vista.

The installation went smoothly. I upgraded to Vista with the patches required to MS and installed all Toshiba drivers and applications in the recommended order.
It was weird that the Toshiba web site had the drivers for Atheros WLAN card, while the U200 uses the Intel 3945ABG. I skipped installing these drivers. Today, I see that they have been removed from the web site. Good shot, indeed, Toshiba.

The first thing that I noticed that the ConfigFree and Intel Proset application have been crippled, if compared to those that are available on Windows XP. The ConfigFree Radar, for example, showed that the WiFi network name, not the single Access Points. Intel Proset was not showing the name of Access Points. It's ok - when a WiFi network has only one access point, but the majority of WiFi networks has several access points...

I learned that it is because Windows Vista manages directly, roaming access points while under XP, this operation has been completed the network adapter and its driver.
Since all software WiFi for XP (Netstubler's) work doesn t under Vista, the only way I was able to locate access points was by typing a command netsh prompt.
In my view, that Toshiba should redouble their efforts on their new software WiFi for Vista.

I was also confronted with other issues, but those issues Vista and not Toshiba. I want to only quote the new Vista network discovery protocol, the NTLM 2, which is incompatible with existing network resources like XP - 2 K based computers and Linux - NAS function. Editing the registry shown on MS Technet for that matter, t has failed. If all goes well, a MS Service Pack, in the future, may solve this problem of backward compatibility.

I also noticed that the Toshiba power management utility had become a subset of Vista power management, it was more than the very neat screen that I liked a lot. In addition, the default value of mapped Windows Vista power button suspends - and not offshore.

Next - I noted that the Fn buttons didn't work unless Toshiba Flash Cards have been loaded and activated. I didn t like Flash cards, because they use a huge 50 MB of RAM. This problem has been resolved with a different BIOS upgrade to version 3.50, I found on the Web from Toshiba site.

Then I started to use the computer. I loved the Aero Interface and the robustness of Vista. I had to disable user account control, since then has been a little too much security, at least for me.
Then using the computer on battery power, closed the lid, and computer is spent in standby mode. Later, I opened the lid and started working again.
Here, I realized something was wrong. To make a long story short:
    1. after suspend and resume, the computer will turn off more.
    2. after him suspend and resume, battery life has been reduced.

It didn't take much to realize it was a BIOS problem. I did a clean reinstall of Vista and the problem remained. I had to physically turn off the computer with the hardware button, because it does not turn off when asked so, but only after an interruption.

At this point, I put in the old hard drive with Windows XP. The computer started fine, any recognition of the fingerprint was extinguished.
BIOS upgrades kill association of OS fingerprints, even if doesn't erase the fingerprints of the probe, information stored fingerprints are no longer usable which is from a pint of view security.
Then, I closed the lid of the computer, and he went to suspend. In XP, the computer with BIOS version 3.50 would not again. It would be rather reset and Windows XP was perform a restart of the recovery thereafter. The Bluetooth radio has been messed up on every reboot.

At this point, my U200 was not usable on Vista and XP. Toshiba Europe web site doesn't allow you to download of old BIOS, neither Toshiba offers a utility to save the old BIOS before flashing a new. I was ready to send to the home computer.

Fortunately enough, I found BIOS version 1.40 on the Toshiba US website. It was not exactly the same as I had before because it showed a generic start-up Logo Intel, while my original BIOS showed the Centrino Duo logo. The version and date were OK, and I flashed the BIOS on my computer. He went everything is OK

With BIOS version 1.40, Windows XP worked perfectly as before. Under Vista, the computer turning off after an interruption / resumption.
The Fn buttons work properly even with loaded flash cards with BIOS version 1.40 under Vista, the brightness of the screen was not controllable - even from the utility to save energy.

At this point, I left 1.40 BIOS and XP on my computer. I'll wait for Toshiba release a compatible BIOS back and the MS to release a Service Pack or a hotfix for the problem network.

At the end of the story, I would like to add a few comments.
I saw the sale the new U200 with Windows Vista preinstalled Toshiba. The new U200 has a Core 2 Duo processor, so I guess that the motherboard will be somewhat up-to-date.
I put t have a new U200, but I think that this new version doesn t suffer from the issue of suspension-recovery.
If anyone from Toshiba is reading this post, I would like to be sent by electronic mail to the original version of 1.40 BIOS that was installed at the factory on my machine, I mean the BIOS showing the Centrino Duo logo colorful start. My email is: antonio.maglione15 (at) libero (dot) it
Also, I ask Toshiba for check the BIOS version 3.50 on an older U200 with processor Core Duo and provide to the public a compatible version back from the BIOS.

    Kind regards

    Antonio
    ROME (Italy)

    Dear Antonio

Thanks for you long interesting history.
As you probably know not this forum is just a user-forum user and I'm afraid that you won't find anyone from Toshiba here m.
Anyway, as you said on the Toshiba page you will find only the latest version of the BIOS and the older versions are not available. This real s. Several months ago, I tried an older version of BIOS for my laptop but without to succeed.
A hint; The authorized service provider may downgrade the laptop to the old version.

In any case, I guess many Vista tools and utilities that are on the market are in a first time and updates might solve some strange behaviors.
I noticed that the BIOS updates are published from time to time. Maybe the next update of the BIOS will provide some improvements.

PS; Don't download and install the BIOS from other sources. European portable computers to use the BIOS from the Web of Toshiba Europe site!

  • Satellite U200-115 request PASSWORD on start up

    Hello

For the first time ever and for no apparent reason my U200-115 has decided to ask for a password (BIOS I believe). It was working quite happily last night. I stopped as normal and kicked as always this morning. He's going theough the Toshiba start screen and then goes to a white screen with PASSWORD = I have no idea what the password and have never set one, can you help me?

I have download Office updates before shutting down then last night, I don't know if this is relevant.

Any help would be appreciated, and bear with me as I am a newbie to this!

    Thank you

    Wendy

    Hello

Do you mean this password it resembles a BIOS password?
It's very strange and not understandable to me.

If it is a BIOS password, then you will need to contact the ASP in your country for deleting and updating the BIOS.

I think you need to contact the ASP as soon as possible and should explain your problem.

    Good luck

  • How to develop the Satellite U200 - 115 RAM?

Are there clear instructions anywhere on the access to the expansion of the U200-115 RAM slots?
I would like to add some more RAM, but can not find how to get to the openings to do.
Reference to a manual with diagrams would be a * much * help.

    See you soon.

    Hello

Upgrading RAM is not really complicated, I think you could get access to the memory locations that very easily slots are placed at the bottom of the device, as far as I know the slots are guaranteed by a screw, remove the screws and you should be able to remove the cover

Both slots can handle DDR2 533 MHz (PC2-4200) 200 - PIN SODIMM barrettes
Usually, you can use modules of different manufacturers I m using Kingston modules and I convinced m

Anyway, as Akuma suggested, it would be useful if you check the user manual you will find a few pictures and a short instruction how to insert these modules

    See you soon

  • Satellite U200-115: recovery disk contains WinXP

The disc above also (XP) the windows software of exploitation? or should I make another record of backup?

    Hello

The Toshiba recovery disc usually contains an operating system, Toshiba drivers, tools and software such as WinDVD, for example.
If your laptop comes with Windows XP, then the recovery CD will contain Windows XP.

If the laptop came with Vista, then the Vista operating system has been placed on the recovery CD!

I hope everything is clear now!

  • Satellite U200-115 fail to start

Suddenly, our old Satellite of 2 year won't start.
    Power supply is OK
I have a 'product' recovery CD, but this seems to destroy all data and programs.
I've never had a boot disk
I am running (working) Windows XP

    Any advice welcome.

    Hello!

That means with won't start? You have the black screen, or you see anything?

If Windows does not start (but) I would reinstall it with the recovery disk. Of course all programs and data will be deleted, but you can save, if put the HARD drive in an external HARD disk enclosure or a boot with a Linux CD and back up the data on an external HARD drive.

The recovery disc to factory settings. This means a Windows preinstalled with the drivers and tools of Toshiba.

    Good bye

  • Drive recovery damaged for Satellite U200-115

My Satellite worked very slowly so I decided to reformat and start again using the recovery disk. He got 65 percent and stopped. I tried a second time and it does the same thing. When I watched the disc, I found that he has a deep scratch across it. Have now left me with a reformatted hard drive but not bone. Any advice would be welcome.

For me, there are two options for you:
-You can try to restore disc original order under https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
-Install the operating system using the Microsoft installation disc
All the necessary drivers, tools and utilities that you can find on Toshiba download page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
