    I finally solved my problem with the update kb2756872 ("update failed, returning of changes"). It was caused by the reserved partition Windows is not set to active (I dual boot using GRUB). Go to the Control Panel-> administrative tools control->-> computer managementdisk management and make sure that the reserved partition is marked 'Active'. This also solves many other problems I experienced as not able to activate Windows startup settings.

    Windows update no longer works for systems with SP2 or less. To check your systems service pack level, click on Start, run and type Winver in the Run dialog box.
