my computer is in FAT32 instead of NTFS file system and it won't let me format it, what should I do?

First of all. Note that your * computer * is not FAT32, it is your hard disk which is FAT32. You may have several diosk readers and some could be some FAT32 and NTFS.

Second, you cannot format your drive from Windows; It is like cutting the branch of a tree, on which you sit.

Third, why do you want to get in shape? To reinstall Windows or simply to change to NTFS? If you want to reinstall Windows, boot from the Windows CD and follow the instructions for a clean install. It will begin by formatting the drive for you.

But if you just want to change your drive to the NTFS format, use the CONVERT command. But first read http://www.aumha.org/a/ntfscvt.htm because there is an important question about the size of cluster that is not obvious.

Note also that conversion is an important step, touching everything on your drive. When you take a big step, no matter how unlikely it is always possible that something can go wrong. For this reason, it is prudent to make sure that you have a backup of everything you can't afford to lose before you start.

    Hello
I recently bought nine Transcend (TS1TSJ25M3) 1 TB External Hard Drive

who is in the FAT32 file system. There are currently 930 GB of free space available. I decided to convert
it to NTFS File system. So first of all, there is no data in thePlayer(it's free)
Second, how much space will get after the formatting in NTFS file system?
And third: is it possible to do it on Windows 7 64-bit OS, or do I have to use another OS?
Please I need answers to my doubts.

In Windows Explorer, right-click on the drive and select Format. Choose NTFS as method in shape.

You will have 930MB after formatting. The rule is that you have 7% less space than the nominal capacity, which allows the difference between the ability of manufacturers of discs (1 GB = 10 ^ 6) and the ability of Windows (1 GB = 2 ^ 10) and space unusable, drawn upward by the method in shape.

  • Why can't I convert my FAT32 to NTFS file system in Win XP SP3?

I want to move to Vista and Windows 7.  When I ran the upgrade for Vista, I was told that I had to do a clean install and upgrade option has been disabled due to the FAT 32 from my hard drive file system.  I can't wipe my drive because I have a bunch of stuff and I don't have the storage means to do so.

I followed the instructions on how to convert without data loss, but when I arrived at the command line and entered ' convert c: / fs:ntsf "I got a message that the drive had to be dismantled and that it translated when I rebooted.  So I've done that and restarted.  The blue screen came and began to convert.  Then there were a bunch of error messages regarding bad sectors or bad files and that it could not be converted.

I then ran chkdsk and chkdsk /f.  The first chkdsk says that there are errors, but they would not fixed because I didn't run with the extension/f.  So I did this and then said that he had to do a restart.  So I restarted and the chkdsk took forever.  When I got back to my office, I ran the line convert again and now I get something along the line of FAT32 and NTFS conversion are not available.

So in addition to abandon and wipe my drive, how can I fix my drive?  Of course, chkdsk /f has not helped and not more than chkdsk/r.  I tried the magic of partition, acronis, and anything else I can get my hands.

    What should I do now?

    Hi sweetp267,

Try these steps and check the result.
    a. connect to the admin user account.
    b. Click Start, run, type cmd and click ok.
    (c) in the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER: CONVERT C:/FS: NTFS /V
    d. check the difference.

The /V will verbose mode and can give more information, if it fails. A restart will be required because the drive is currently in use by the operating system.

  • Can I transfer files from computer XP with FAT 32 file system to computer XP with NTFS file system?

I'm trying to transfer files from one computer to the other, both with XP.  Former is set up with the file system FAT 32. new using NTFS.  When I copy the files on thumb drive FAT 32 to and try and transfer to computer NTFS, files transfer, but nothing in them.  This does mean that I can't make such a transfer, or is there something I am doing wrong.  THX.

Y at - it files of 4 GB or more large size?  It's the only thing I can think of that could cause a problem, but I only expect to see only when copying from NTFS to FAT32.

When the files disappear?  They are on the Flash DRIVE?

How did you copy the file to the USB of the first computer?  How do copy you them from the USB drive to the second computer?

  • How can I change the NTFS file system to say fat so my TV will read the HD Ext USB files? Thank you

Using Vista, downloaded a movie on 2GB USB flash drive and Iomega 1 TB HARD drive then strove to connect both in TV Grundig.

Read file ok but wouldn't play film "says cannot read the file format" all clues please? For your info I have 63 years if my grandson was here 6 years old it would probably sort fast time, but I can't! :)

    Hi Norman,

After you convert a partition to NTFS (New Technology File System), you can not convert back. If you want to use the FAT (File Allocation table) file system on the partition again, you will need to reformat the partition, and this will erase all data on it.

Click on the link mentioned below as reference.

  • Use restore disk errors impossible C and error checking failed to open NTFS file system. Pleas help

I try to use System. restore and it says drive C contains errors, you should check the drive for errors before you can restore it. When I run an error check it say this type of file system is NTFS: cannot open the volume for direct access. Thanks for any help.

    Hello GregID,

My recommendation based on your response is to do the following:

    1. Click Start and type 'CMD' in the search bar.
    2. Right-click on the cmd finds it and choose "Run as Administrator"
    3. Type ' CHKDSK/f' and press on it, if it says restart.

This should allow the system to run CHKDSK in the window that is already open.

    Best regards

  • Corrupt boot drivers and XP NTFS file system

The system event log shows that I have files corrupted ntfs and suggests also I have the drivers corrupt boot and MS says I should check and repair if necessary - but how do I do this?  There seems to be nothing in the knowledge base on this issue. I have also a no momentum for a service of IP security, but maybe it's just the result of corrupted file system and I will need to recheck once I fixed the underlying problem. Advice please?

There is also a logon successful for 'Anonymous' on several occasions that may or may not indicate a virus, but may also be the result of damaged files - messy!

    Hello

I suggest you try to perform the clean boot and check if it helps:

NOTE: When you are finished troubleshooting, make sure that you reset the computer in start mode normal such as suggested in step 7 of the above article.

    It will be useful.
