My 8 year hard drive seems to have died. I love HP and particularly in this case and the mobo to work well for me, so I plan to replace my Vista 32 bit w / 64 bit W7 and install a 1 TB WD HD that has a warning on the label that it is a format disc advanced.  It means the Web of WD site for more information.  This whole process looks like defusing a bomb for me so any advice to avoid the traps will be appreciated!

    Webbww, welcome to the forum.

Advanced Format drives don't work with old HP computers.  I suggest buying a standard SATA, 7200 RPM.  You can use disks to 6 Gbit/s because they are backward compatible.  Also, here is a good guide to help you to restore the system after replacing the drive.  It will help to defuse the bomb.

Here are the upgrades are advised by Crucial memory for your computer.  You can try one of them to increase the performance of the SSD.  You will have to buy one at least 128 GB to work with recovery disks.

  • Impossible to reinstall format drive "C" for XP

Told me to reinstall Windows XP on my pc to solve a problem of 'hijackware', but I can't get past formatting the C drive I get a message telling me "unable to format drive C as another is privatisation it" - or words to that effect - so, how can I get around this.

My BIOS is set to 1) cd read

    (2) - hard drive

    (3) diskette

... then why can I do?

Also, when I boot from the cd, it ends by takes me to the Windows XP Welcome screen and gives me 4 options i.e. install Windows XP - but when I click it I get a message saying "unable to install WXP this version of XP is older than your current installation" - what do I do now?

I printed out the HOW TO do a clean install of WinXP and also steps to Clean install XP but cannot use them because I can't format the C drive, and when I boot from WINXP CD it askes me what I done said then I can't do it because it's an older version I am trying to load!

I might have misunderstood the problem. Assuming you follow these instructions:

    (for SP2 or SP3)
    (or for older children)
you're able to follow the guests, specifically:
"Press any key to boot from the CD-ROM...".
Press 'ENTER' to begin the installation.
When you see the license agreement, what happens when you press the F8 key?
Some keyboards/PCs, you will need to press the following combination:
Fn (or key LOCK) key + key F8
It works (assuming that your keyboard has a Fn or a LOCK button F)?
If 'all' key and the key of the entry but book the F8 key does not work, I think you should try a different keyboard.

"Windows cannot format this drive. "Leave all utility disc or other programs that could use this drive.

    Hello

Check if you are able to format drive C in a clean boot state.

From your computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine if a background program is interfering with your game or program. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot".

    Reference:
How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" State

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
    1. click on start and then click Run.
    2. type msconfig and click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.

    3. click on the tab general, click Normal Startup - load all services and device drivers and then click OK.
    4. When prompted, click on restart to restart the computer.

  • Format drive C on my Satellite 1410

    Hi all

I was told that it is better to format your c: drive before you do a reinstall of Windows. Is this true?

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1410, Windows XP Home Edition and you want to reinstall windows since according to the guidelines of my ISP, my laptop seems to be used as an open relay.

What are the steps to take to a Format your hard drive in any case. I saw an article on Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313348) and that worried me a little. For a how to check the BIOS settings...?

    Appreciate all the advice!

    Thanks in advance,
    Ellen

    Hi Ellen

If you want to reinstall your laptop, please use the Toshiba Recovery CD and the C drive will be formatted automatically. I suppose you have multiple partitions on the HARD drive. In this case, please use the installation in Expert mode, because on this path, it is possible to install the operating system on a partition.

More details you can find on http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2513&tstart=30.

  • Formatting drive takes hours?

What is the average time format a Seagate 1 TB drive using Mac OS extended (journaled)?  A few hours ago Linc recommended I have backup my system and upgrade to El Capitan Yosemite because of the panic log information, with him "hope this will fix a possible OS X bug, or even a hardware failure in the module wireless, the logic board or the boot drive." The Seagate drive I bought yesterday said it will take up to 4 hours to 'Wipe free space' and this number continues climbing. Before formatting, I did a disk check/repair top (it should fix). And what do I do if my computer falls down while it is formatting?

    Thanks - Kim

LINC tell you to erase free space? Because simply erase the hard drive should be done pretty quickly, but erase free space can take a long time to complete. I don't know what is the average time, but considering that you have a 1 TB hard drive, I'm not completely surprised that she was taking 4 + hours.

While it is safer to delete the free space, it is not really necessary unless you remove documents which are a matter of national security. A regular delete will suffice, unless you're paranoid, your documents under restoration. (The only other time, it may be necessary if you can't wipe your hard drive using a normal deletion, or if your hard drive is defect and must be reformatted. Sometimes a secure erase works when a normal deletion is not)

In addition, there are a few options to "Erase the free space," which takes a long time. See Apple article just erase the free space. LINC Davis is a person very knowledgable on this support site, so if he's told to do something I'm sure it was the right thing to do.

  • Re: Format drive on a Satellite A200 - 1 H 2

I found a lot of visits to the problem of not being able to format a HARD drive on the A200 series. Once installation has started, the dropouts and wrote:

I'm still not sure what to do; install the new drivers? change the bios settings? Press F6 during installation? I looked on the site toshiba driver but I can't find the HARD disk drivers and it's really hard for me to choose the right model, since there are so many A200. I know that my cell phone as being an A200 1 H 2...

The answer to this problem is probably given a few times before on this forum, but im having trouble finding. Thanks in advance

    Hello

It is a common problem if you are using non OEM Toshiba discs to reformat. Windows XP not drivers SATA integrated into the drive wherever the Toshiba OEM disks are.

You will need to install the drivers using a diskette and pressing F6 when you are prompted during the boot from the disk. Toshiba call these Storage Manager or Intel Matrix Storage drivers (depending on where you go for the drivers). You can find which model you have by looking at the Toshiba sticker on the base of the laptop. This number will normally be a reference number or a model number (must be above the serial number).

Alternatively, there is a program called nLite that allows you to intergrate the SATA drivers in a XP disk install.

    I hope this helps. :)

  • Satellite P20 - formatting drive HARD and the installation of Windows XP Sp2

    Hello world

Beforehand, I want to thank you for taking the time to help me with my questions.

Due to system problems I'm trying to re - install Windows XP SP2.

Based on the installation process, I have two questions:

    1. when I start the PC, the operating system Windows XP installation CD in the CD drive, I am unable to run it directly. Instead the old operating system (which I want to remove) starts. Is there a specific key in the Toshiba P20 notebook that runs the CD automatically? I understand that when the Windows XP installation CD to run it gives me the option to format the HARD drive.

    2. If I want to format the HARD disk directly, what is the best way to do this?

Once again, thank you very much for the help

    Best regards

    Q.

    Hello

I assume that you have the original CD of Microsoft Windows XP.
To install a new OS, you must start on this CD.

Insert the CD and after laptop starting immediately press the F12 key.
This will enable the Startup menu, and then you may choose the CD/DVD drive as the boot source.

    As to question 2;
During the installation of XP Setup will ask you the HARD drive formatting. Simply to choose this option and the HARD drive will be formatted.

    Good bye

I have a 250 GB external hard drive that I had for a few years.
Recently, one of the folders on it ask format me so therefore I can't access the stuff in it.
There are about 50-60 GB of music in there.
Is all the same to recover this music that I do not particularly losing everything?

Other files with movies and photos it seems to work ok, I don't really understand

This seems really not good man.
I personally didn t notice of similar questions on the external HARD drive, but who knows maybe the HARD drive contains bad sectors, and so you can access the external HARD disk
Is it possible to run chkdsk on this external HARD drive? If not, I don't see any great chances to access the HARD disk and save data from damage.

    Hi hsu.

    You can view this guide,

    http://www.TechRepublic.com/blog/window-on-Windows/restore-Windows-8-with-system-image-recovery/7464

This allows you to create a backup of your windows image and save it to CD media or a disk for later retrieval use drive.

I think this will copy what you have now on the computer and save it on a disk, it is a good alternative to your lost recovery partition

    Hope this helps,
