Free ESXi hypervisor using

Hi all

We intend to use the free hypervisor on a server into one company. I want to be sure that this thing is possible with this free version:

-Import virtual machines from vmx and vmdk files or directory

We want VMs backup to NAS external. To do this, add us datastore in vic and copy virtual machines on the NAS. In the event of hardware failure, we have another server outside the company we want to be able to import files of virtual machines.

Is this possible?

Many thanks in advance

You can use the free VMware Converter to import customers from different sources (physical, images, virtual).

VIC? If you mean vSphere vCenter you need a client license. That is not free.

  • Maximum number of virtual machines by free ESXi hypervisor?

    Community of VMware,

I just installed the free 5.5 ESXi hypervisor and I wonder if the same virtual machine limits apply to the stand-alone scenario as vCenter? Can I run actually 512 VMs? What, if any, is the maximum number of virtual machines, I can run on a free version of ESXi?

From 5.5 ESXi limits most have been removed, but only a limit of 8 vCPU per VM remains. So if I'm wrong, the VM 512 mentioned for each host (see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r55/vsphere-55-configuration-maximums.pdf) affect the free hypervisor.

  • Update ESXi Hypervisor using CLI

    Hi all

I have ESXi 4.1 hypervisor (free version). IM managing it in vSphere Client. Good enough for now. But I want to update host (ESXi) with all the patches (security, occasional updates). I read that the only way to do this without having to buy special tools is by CLI. So can you tell me if the following steps are correct and safe for my case?

    1. download vsphere CLI

    2. go to the judgment and customer vshpere machines

    3. Enter maintenance mode

    4. go to the CLI and type:

    > cd bin
    > vihostupdate.pl -i -bundle [path_to_patch].zip -url https://[IP_of_ESXi_host]/sdk/webservice

    5. Repeat this for all patches i want to insert into ESXi
    6 Turn off maintaince mode
    7. Start all machines

Is that ok and safe to do it. I don't want to broke my ESXi host instance, couse then im in pretty troubles.

Second question is in this steps above i can upgrade to ESXi 5.0?

    Thanks in advance,
    Bastian

Looks like you have only 1 host, so an upgrade would probably be best.

  • What are the free ESXi / 5.1 vsphere Hypervisor hardware required / restrictions?

Situation: I'm going to update a few web servers where I am currently under the free version of ESXi/vSphere 4.0.  When 5.0 was released, I decided to not look at new versions of VMware because of the restriction of vRAM and either run an earlier version or something.  I came across a post that says 5.1 license was different and stopped by the page 5.1 and read this http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere-hypervisor/requirements.html who actually reads differently.

Questions: am I correct in my understanding of the restrictions for 5.1 are:

    1. 32 GB max RAM PHYSICS?  (It's a big change from 32GB vRAM).

    2. no limit on the number of CPUs or cores?  (This is a big change of physical processor 1 up to 6 cores max.)

    Thank you!

PS: If the only real limitation is now 32 GB RAM virtual, VMware made a good shot.  I'm not the skin to VMware, so I think that physical 32 GB is perfect.  There is still only so much you can do in the 32 GB, but there is not the complexities of licensing.  The restriction of vRAM was impassable.  Server purchase is unnecessarily complicated by restrictions of socket and core.  This means that I could buy a standard speed core 8 or 10 cheaper XEON or use an older multiprocessor machine instead of an expensive high-frequency 6 core with hyperthreading.

    1. 32 GB max RAM PHYSICS?  (It's a big change from 32GB vRAM).

Yes that's right FREE esxi supports maximum 32 GB physical RAM can only

    2. no limit on the number of CPUs or cores?  (This is a big change of physical processor 1 up to 6 cores max.)

No Yes No limit on physical CPU or cores

  • Impossible to use 5.5 free ESXi?

    Hi guys,.

I have a question. I want to use ESXi 5.5 my free license. I downloaded the installer and install it on my server. But whenever I want to connect via vSphere, I get a message that I left the 60 days for the activation of ESXi, otherwise it will not work.

How can I use my license key, so that my server can work more than 60 days?

    Best regards!

    Hello

    It is a normal behavior.

Now you use a license in evaluation mode (all features enabled).

When the 60-day trial period is over, all licensed features will be disabled, and certain tasks (for example on and off the virtual machines power) will not be allowed.

Then, you change the evaluation by a license license free esxi, before the 60-day evaluation period expires.

  • VMWare ESXi hypervisor of 5.5 Free Edition on a server explosion 2

    Hi forum,

I just installed a hypervisor 5.5 ESXi on a HP Server a test socket.

It works great and I could license with free ESXi license.

Now, I would like to upgrade an acual ESXi 5.1 Fujitsu server with two explosion (2 x Xeon E5-2630 6 c/12 t) and 64 GB of RAM.

The server is in eval mode 60 days of ESXi 5.1 because of the 64 GB of Ram. The license hypervisor free ESXi 5.1 only works for 32 GB of Ram, so I couldn't activate it.

Is it possible to update AND license the machine two struggling with ESXi hypervisor from 5.5?

My housing a real test-system shows that the license is valid for a power outlet. Can I register two free hypervisor 5.5 licenses on the Fujitsu 2-socket-server or is a license enough.

In the worst case, it does not work with 5.5

I only have a single ESXi server, so I need a vCenter and so on.

At would be in your opinion?

    Thank you very much

    Yes it's quite right.

  • Can I use SE Sparse files in 5.1 free ESXi?

Can I use SE Sparse files in 5.1 free ESXi?  I want to use in order to avoid the current process to clean thin VMDK.  I read the article of Hogan vSphere 5.1 storage improvements - part 2: rare discs SE and it seems to indicate that it is only for the desktop view.  Here is How to create a floppy SE Sparse (footprint) in vSphere 5.1 shows it is possible, but speaks only the Web Client, which, from what I can tell, is not available for ESXi and have vCenter Server, which is not free.  If I'm missing something here, please let me know.

    Thank you!

Sparse disk feature is not limited and should work fine in free ESXi, however the only supported way to use it is with VMware View.

There is no way to support (or simple) use SE Sparse without view at present.

  • VSphere ESXi hypervisor free, re-usable clon server tests?

    Hello

I tested VMWare vSphere, ESXi Hypervisor, the free program.

I try to get tips motherboard I should buy to test the vSphere Hypervisor?

I tested some form of Intel and Asus motherboard and Boot CD saysit cannot detect the network card. But in a Dell 2950 PowerEdge, it works very well.

Another thing is that I read that in a motheboard with only SATA2 ports, the data store is detected as 'rare' and not 'local', so my final question is if vSphere is recommended only from servers brand or certification or if this could work in a re-usable/clon/DYI Server?

    Thank you very much

    Oliver

Although the ESXi Hypervisor can run on office equipment - often only when equipped with an additional supported NIC - it's officially supported only on the server hardware that can be found in the VMware Compatibility Guide

  • Free ESXi using more a carrot?

I use free ESXi on a server with a Dual Core processor.  When I apply the serial number, features licensed watch I am licensed to 1 CPU.  If my server has 1 processor Dual Core - ESXi uses the two hearts?

Yes. VMware licenses are per-socket not by heart.

  • ESXi Hypervisor free + HP P4500 (former lefthand)

    Hi all

for a customer, we have the plan of establishing an environment of small size with VM (2 x HP DL360 host machines) with storage behind it (60 to on a 5 HP P4500 node.)

I have a question, that's probably easy to find, but I'm not able to get the right answer. The free ESXi supports iSCSI connections, we can store the virtual machine in a data store created on the P4500?

At the time, this client will probably get a licensed version of VMWare vCenter Server and HA, possibly the license of the company for FT, but now, they want to test without a license (so not a 60 day trial Enterprise license)

    Thanks in advance

    Kind regards

    Hi Kay,

There is no limit on the connectivity iSCSI on the free version of ESXi.

  • Free ESXi details

could someone please shed some light on where he is now.

    (1) I realize that the free ESXi 5.5 new lifted restrictions of memory, but these restrictions have also been lifted for older versions?  Why VMware would remove the restriction to the 5.5 versions but not earlier?

    (2) if the restriction is not thrown for 5.1, which is the real restriction?  It's 32 GB of ram total in the server, or 32 GB of ram per socket, I saw it part two ways in different positions...

    (3) if the restriction is not thrown for 5.1, what should a user expect to see should when they try to apply the free license to 5.1 hypervisor that has more memory X memory in the host? (I say X because I have not yet replied to question 2)

    Thank you.

OK, thanks for your response guys, you were mostly correct.  but I felt to actually test this while you wait for the answer, here's the final on that:

the host was built using eval similarly all hosts are built, he had 48 GB of memory.  When I tried to add the free lic he first gave me an error message indicating that it didn't belong to the product.  It doesn't have any meaning.  I tried again and got the same error... very frustrating.  One thing to note, I was connected directly on vmnic0 via my laptop on the completely isolated network.

I tried again, only the 3rd time I tried, I was at my desk, connection to ESXi through vClient (I got access to the internet from this station), and this time the error message was completely different, he said that I was too memory displays the amount of memory (48 GB), said the ICA would support only 32GB.

So the hypervisor starts indeed, but why wouldn't it, its still in eval mode... and after mode eval is finished, I think that ESXi will start at the hypervisor, but you just can not power on virtual machines.

So the treat on the hypervisor, not boot or startup seems to be incorrect.

If someone wishes to speak I'll keep this post open for a few days.

  • vCenter Trial - add free ESXi existing Datacenter

I've been running three hosts with the free version of ESXi. We try to evaluate licenses paid to get additional features (vMotion, etc.). I imported the virtual appliance for the server vCenter without any problem. Now I try to add my existing hosts in the data center, which I created in vCenter. When I do this, I get an error "download the file 10.161.30.3 to vCenter License Server failed because the exception: vim.fault.HostConnectFault". Is it not possible to add existing free ESXi hosts to vCenter trial?

Cannot add ESXi hosts permitted by the hypervisor free license to vCenter Server. If the hosts 60-day evaluation period have not been achieved, we can use it in trial mode. Apart from this you can ask for the keys to the assessment of your VMware reseller representative.

  • ESXi Hypervisor - start of the guest on the question of booting operating system

    Hi all

I am very new to the game of VMware and I intend to start playing with free products available and to acquire a good understanding of it.

My question that I have currenty obtained is:

I have my desktop PC, I intend to install 5.1 ESXi hypervisor on it and then install a version of windows as a guest operating system.

I hope that I can set up so that when I turn on the computer, windows automatically boots - so if my wife wants to use the computer, it can still, and his experience is no different. However, I can then install several other OS and turn them as and when I need and have a good game.

Reading through the documentation that it doesn't look like this is possible?

I know that this is not strictly the destination of the product, but it would be convenient for me.

Has anyone encountered this before? / You know a way to do this?

    Thank you very much

    Tom Whittle

Welcome to the community - it is possible to have a virtual machine to run at startup of the ESXi Hypervisor but where your solution falls short is you are not able to access the virtual machines in the ESXi host console - you still need another machine to run the vSphere client so you can manage the ESXi host and access the virtual machine.

  • Assessment vs free ESXi

Hello... I hope you can help, because I am pulling my hair out, running around in circles trying to understand this.  I know that VMWare would like to 'sell' things, but they announce a hypervisor VSphere/ESXi 5 'free '... HOW to get the free version - or at least a key to activate/register it?

I went to http://www.vmware.com/go/get-free-esxi/ and follow the guests (I have both connected to an account, I got back to version 3.5 AND created a new job - both with the same result), got ESXi downloaded and installed, but I get a pop-up from the client saying that my assessment has 60 days to the left and click on a link to assign a license.  On using the link, we wonder again at connection, now that I am presented with a registration page.  After completing the registration page, I gives me information on my assessment.  I don't have listed in my VMWare license keys (although I've seen initially a key when first present with my download link)... only an assessment with links on EACH page on how to 'buy' VSphere.

How my free VSphere become only a test and evaluation?  Where can I get a free license for VSphere and how to assign a free license to my VSphere host?

Sorry for the frustration - I would really like to test the waters to implement VMWare to our datacenter upgrade, I've heard great things on this subject, but at this point what does say that Microsoft licensing is WAY easier than VMWare?

    Thank you!

In the vSphere client, click on the server.  Go to the Configuration tab.  Choose "Licensed Features" (to the left of the pane, under 'Software').  Click on "Edit"... "(top right of the pane).
