vCenter Trial - add free ESXi existing Datacenter

I've been running three hosts with the free version of ESXi. We try to evaluate licenses paid to get additional features (vMotion, etc.). I imported the virtual appliance for the server vCenter without any problem. Now I try to add my existing hosts in the data center, which I created in vCenter. When I do this, I get an error "download the file 10.161.30.3 to vCenter License Server failed because the exception: vim.fault.HostConnectFault". Is it not possible to add existing free ESXi hosts to vCenter trial?

Cannot add ESXi hosts permitted by the hypervisor free license to vCenter Server. If the hosts 60-day evaluation period have not been achieved, we can use it in trial mode. Apart from this you can ask for the keys to the assessment of your VMware reseller representative.

  • VCenter Server with VMWare ESXi free 5 5

    Hi all

Test the VCenter Server 5 Evaluation (60 day trial) to management all my 5 of VMWare ESXi (free license). It works with restrictions. These restrictions aren´t a problem for me. I need only to move (power off of virtual machines), clone, create templates for and organize my servers in a single interface VSphere Client. So, I would like to know what type of license of VCenter Server 5 woks if VMWare ESXi 5 free. Buy the VCenter Server 5 Standard?

Another doubt is if VStorage works with VMWare ESXi free license I.

    Best regards

Unfortunately the free ESXi hosts in vCenter management is not possible (except for the eval). The hosts of ESXi need a vCenter Server Agent license that is only available in editions 'paid' of ESXi.

  • Free ESXi: host removed from the inventory... How to re - add?

    1. I created a new local client as a test using the free ESXi and included Infrastructure Client 2.5.0

    .

    2. I stopped, went to the inventory list and chosen to remove inventory

    .

    3. I can see all the files are still present on the data store...

    .

3B. this part incidentally is enough 'fun' to understand. There is no option menu anywhere to access the data store. The only way I found is to double click on the small icon...

    .

    4. How can I add this virtual machine in the inventory list and resume using this client I created with only the free ESXi tools?

    ,

It seems that my only option to get a customer that is running is to make a new, or to "import" a via a weird file called a format *. OVF. Which is strange because that esxi uses not this format of its own client local file, as shown above in the data store.

So, is the absence of a dialogue "Open existing VM" how VMWare is shooting free users in the foot?  It's the hidden gotcha that they use to force me to upgrade infrastructure for $3000 +, just to get a dialog box "open existing virtual machine"?

    -Melanie Dale

Hi DMahalko, to add a virtual machine to inventory (re-record with the host country), you select the .vmx file in the window of the data store and click on the button all the way to the left of the toolbar in data store of the browser (the one with the logo of VMware as its icon). Who will start the wizard to add back to your inventory.

For later use, you can also use the 'Search' tab in the browser of data store to find all the virtual machines in a data store. Simply select "Virtual Machines" in the drop-down and she will show you all virtual machines out there (including those who are already in the inventory). Hope that helps!

Please, help me by awarding points for a 'useful' or 'proper' response if you think it is useful!

  • Cannot add 6 ESXi to vCenter

    Hello

I hope someone can help, I'll through in circles!

I am using ESXi for years, but always as unique hosts. Recently, I obtained a license for vCenter 6 essential elements and put on the creation of a laboratory.

I have two ESXi hosts, a Mac Mini (192.168.1.0/24) and a Dell PowerEdge (192.168.10.0/24), the two v6 ESXi running. vCenter v6 is running on a virtual computer on the Dell Poweredge server and works. Can be connect/license/administer etc. Also, I added successfully to the Mac Mini to the new data center.

However, I can't add the Dell Poweredge server. Whenever I pass by the host process add I get the following:

"Unable to contact the specified host (hostname.domain.local). "The host may not be available on the network, may have a network configuration problem, or that the management on this host services may not respond"

Also, when I have RDP on the vCenter virtual hosting machine I ping the server Poweredge ESXi by IP, host name and the FULL domain name, but I can not connect to it via vSphere Client. However, if I use my laptop (192.168.1.0/24 range GOLD 192.168.10.0/24) I can correctly connect the Poweredge ESXi server.

Can I add a host ESXi, vCenter vCenter is running on this host?

    Any help would be appreciated!

Can I add a host ESXi, vCenter vCenter is running on this host?

Yes, you can, but you must ensure that the appropriate network ports are open between ESXi and vCenter. VCenter Server both the ESXi (to PowerEdge) are running on the same subnet?

  • Can you connect free ESXi to Vcenter?

Probably a simple question, but I don't seem to find a clear answer.   I have an environment Vsphere with Vcenter 4.1 and I recently had to load the free ESXi on a single machine just to run 2 virtual machines on a single server.   I was wondering if the free license allows the management with Vcenter server licensed.

    Thank you.

  • No more free ESXi?

    Hello!

I thought the ESXi Hypervisor was free, so I downloaded ESXi 5 and installed on a server rack-HP-.

The only way to manage a guest operating system is to install the vSphere Client and he says it's only a test 60 days.

I thought maybe it is the customer who is on triel vSphere, but when I look at the ESXi, he also says "trial".

Y at - it a sort of free ESXi or should I buy?

Without the vSphere Client, how to manage comments-OX? In CLI?

    RS

It is only valid for vCenter.

You must follow the instructions for a stand-alone article KB André related license host:

To allow a standalone ESXi 5.x (vSphere Hypervisor):

    1. Connect to the ESXi host with vSphere Client.
    2. Click the Configuration tab.
    3. Click licensed features in software.
    4. Click change in the appearance under the license tab.
    5. Select assign a new license key at this host.
    6. Press enter and enter the license key.
    7. Click OK.

  • Limitation of the free ESXi?

We bought vSphere with 3 standard ESX/ESXi. What is the difference between ESXi installation with the license and the free license?

How many physical servers can be installed with free ESXi license? And can all these servers use the same license key?

In addition, no problem if we install on the free ESXi Server vCenter to manage servers ESX 3?

The difference between free ESXi and licensed editions is the features available.  You can see the features that you get when you add a level license here.  You are not limited the number of guests, that you can install with your free ESXi license, but you cannot manage them with vCenter without add a vCenter Agent license.  It would be no problem to install vCenter in a VM on ESXi to manage your other ESX hosts.

  • get updates from vm 10 odd hosts running free esxi

    Hello

I have 10 strange hosts that are taking place in free esxi

    They have same passwd root...

can anyone suggest a script that can pull the info vm from them?

If they're in vcenter alone its easy, but in my case its little diff here

Make sure that you are in multiple mode (Set-PowerCLIConfiguration), and then connect (Connect-VIServer) to each node ESXi.

A cmdlet, such as the use of Get-VM, now, if you do not use the Server parameter, will run you on all connected nodes of ESXi.

You can check the ESXi nodes connected by displaying the content of $global: defaultviservers

  • Impossible to use 5.5 free ESXi?

    Hi guys,.

I have a question. I want to use ESXi 5.5 my free license. I downloaded the installer and install it on my server. But whenever I want to connect via vSphere, I get a message that I left the 60 days for the activation of ESXi, otherwise it will not work.

How can I use my license key, so that my server can work more than 60 days?

    Best regards!

    Hello

    It is a normal behavior.

Now you use a license in evaluation mode (all features enabled).

When the 60-day trial period is over, all licensed features will be disabled, and certain tasks (for example on and off the virtual machines power) will not be allowed.

Then, you change the evaluation by a license license free esxi, before the 60-day evaluation period expires.

  • Free ESXi details

could someone please shed some light on where he is now.

    (1) I realize that the free ESXi 5.5 new lifted restrictions of memory, but these restrictions have also been lifted for older versions?  Why VMware would remove the restriction to the 5.5 versions but not earlier?

    (2) if the restriction is not thrown for 5.1, which is the real restriction?  It's 32 GB of ram total in the server, or 32 GB of ram per socket, I saw it part two ways in different positions...

    (3) if the restriction is not thrown for 5.1, what should a user expect to see should when they try to apply the free license to 5.1 hypervisor that has more memory X memory in the host? (I say X because I have not yet replied to question 2)

    Thank you.

OK, thanks for your response guys, you were mostly correct.  but I felt to actually test this while you wait for the answer, here's the final on that:

the host was built using eval similarly all hosts are built, he had 48 GB of memory.  When I tried to add the free lic he first gave me an error message indicating that it didn't belong to the product.  It doesn't have any meaning.  I tried again and got the same error... very frustrating.  One thing to note, I was connected directly on vmnic0 via my laptop on the completely isolated network.

I tried again, only the 3rd time I tried, I was at my desk, connection to ESXi through vClient (I got access to the internet from this station), and this time the error message was completely different, he said that I was too memory displays the amount of memory (48 GB), said the ICA would support only 32GB.

So the hypervisor starts indeed, but why wouldn't it, its still in eval mode... and after mode eval is finished, I think that ESXi will start at the hypervisor, but you just can not power on virtual machines.

So the treat on the hypervisor, not boot or startup seems to be incorrect.

If someone wishes to speak I'll keep this post open for a few days.

  • Nested Vrsion Eval of ESXi 5.5 free ESXi

OK, I'm playing with the advanced features of ESXi and I want to install a nested eval version of 5.5 ESXi in my free version of ESXi 5.5. Do a little research, I did the following:

    • Install VMware ESXi 5 on a physical host and configure networks, storage and other aspects as needed (already have this race successfully with other virtual machines running)
    • Configure a vSwitch or port group for the active Mode Promiscuous
    • Log Mode of Tech Support (ssh or ILO) and do the following to activate tweak nested 64-bit clients
      echo 'vhv.allow = "TRUE"' >> /etc/vmware/config

In addition, I went to the tab my 5.5 ESXi VM options and is went to the CPU/MMU virtualization and tried both using Intel VT - x settings when I installed. In both cases, I received a warning when installing ESXi that she would not support 64-bit virtual servers. When I pressed forward in any case, I wasn't able to create a computer virtual using Windows 2008 R2 64-bit.

    So my questions are:

-J' read somewhere that you may not be able use nested virtualization with the free version of ESXi. Is - this true/not true?

-If you can make nested virtualization with free ESXi then what am I doing wrong? What are the settings to make it work. I wonder if I'm missing something.

    Thank you

This parameter is required for ESX 5.0.  It is no longer necessary.

  • Can I use SE Sparse files in 5.1 free ESXi?

Can I use SE Sparse files in 5.1 free ESXi?  I want to use in order to avoid the current process to clean thin VMDK.  I read the article of Hogan vSphere 5.1 storage improvements - part 2: rare discs SE and it seems to indicate that it is only for the desktop view.  Here is How to create a floppy SE Sparse (footprint) in vSphere 5.1 shows it is possible, but speaks only the Web Client, which, from what I can tell, is not available for ESXi and have vCenter Server, which is not free.  If I'm missing something here, please let me know.

    Thank you!

Sparse disk feature is not limited and should work fine in free ESXi, however the only supported way to use it is with VMware View.

There is no way to support (or simple) use SE Sparse without view at present.

  • What are the free ESXi / 5.1 vsphere Hypervisor hardware required / restrictions?

Situation: I'm going to update a few web servers where I am currently under the free version of ESXi/vSphere 4.0.  When 5.0 was released, I decided to not look at new versions of VMware because of the restriction of vRAM and either run an earlier version or something.  I came across a post that says 5.1 license was different and stopped by the page 5.1 and read this http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere-hypervisor/requirements.html who actually reads differently.

Questions: am I correct in my understanding of the restrictions for 5.1 are:

    1. 32 GB max RAM PHYSICS?  (It's a big change from 32GB vRAM).

    2. no limit on the number of CPUs or cores?  (This is a big change of physical processor 1 up to 6 cores max.)

    Thank you!

PS: If the only real limitation is now 32 GB RAM virtual, VMware made a good shot.  I'm not the skin to VMware, so I think that physical 32 GB is perfect.  There is still only so much you can do in the 32 GB, but there is not the complexities of licensing.  The restriction of vRAM was impassable.  Server purchase is unnecessarily complicated by restrictions of socket and core.  This means that I could buy a standard speed core 8 or 10 cheaper XEON or use an older multiprocessor machine instead of an expensive high-frequency 6 core with hyperthreading.

    1. 32 GB max RAM PHYSICS?  (It's a big change from 32GB vRAM).

Yes that's right FREE esxi supports maximum 32 GB physical RAM can only

    2. no limit on the number of CPUs or cores?  (This is a big change of physical processor 1 up to 6 cores max.)

No Yes No limit on physical CPU or cores
