FreeBSD on ESX4 VMware tools

Is that what someone has successfully installed vmware tools on a FreeBSD virtual machine under ESX 4?  I have a vSphere 4.0 test environment I am doing an upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0 on before this on my production servers and have problems vmware-tools on FreeBSD 7.1 and 7.2 to be considered good working condition by vCenter.

Specifically, I installed the tools of the file vmware-freebsd - tool.tar on VMware-tools-freebsd-116369 iso, which is the package tools currently referenced, on FreeBSD 7.1 and 7.2 facilities.  It's the same setup file that I used successfully on several FreeBSD installs under 3.5.

The Installer seems to install fine, and the demon starts normally.  But for these virtual machines, I have improved on 3.5 to 4.0 hosts, vCenter (4.0) reports "VMware Tools: not installed".

I also tried new construction FreeBSD 7.1 and 7.2 virtual machines on the 4.0 hosts upgraded, and this, after installing the vmware tools, report "VMware Tools: obsolete.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I just spent a week working with VMware support on this same exact question, and we found a resolution that works.

Their official response, it's because of FreeBSD do not supported on older versions of ESX 4.0. The new freebsd.iso included with vSphere awaits a guest with version 7 of material. Because the machines were created before the upgrade to vSphere, the hardware version is 4. VMS also appear with a guest operating system type of "Other Linux", because FreeBSD is not possible before.

Their solution is to uninstall the existing tools of the VM and stop the FreeBSD Guest. Then right click on the computer and upgrade virtual hardware. Then you will be able to change the type of operating system asked the new option other > FreeBSD. Start the machine and mount the iso freebsd and install the tools. It should show OK now. I know that sounds a bit risky to force the upgrade of equipment without the tools are installed, but I did it on 4 machines so far and they run a lot.

Hope this helps you.

  • VMware tools on the guest OS FreeBSD 7.1

    Hello, everyone,

I am running a VMware player 4.0 on my Windows 7 Professional. My guest OS is a FreeBSD 7.1 to measure.

The image of comments came with installed Xorg, but I had to run the configure script before you can properly run. Then, I compiled and installed Gnome as my office.

The problem is, I can not install the VMware tools. Usually there is an option "Install VMware Tools", if you click on the button 'Virtual Machine' on top of the VMware window. You can select and it will put the VMware Tools in your virtual CD. You can mount and install then from there. But now it shows 'VMware Tools unavailable' for me.

There is a "VMware Tools" folder in my root directory. I don't know if it came with the image of comments or put there my VMware player (seems unlikely...). I ran the install script in this folder. He told me that "driver not found Xorg", but the installation go all the way to the end and you say Setup is complete.

I love the conveniece VMware Tools give you, copy between the host and the guest, swing your mouse in and out of the window, VMware etc. So please someone tell me what are tools of WMware really not available for my custom FreeBSD7.1? Thank you!

  • How to enable shared folders on VMWare Tools under ESX4

On a windows server is running on a host ESX 4, VMWare Tools reports that the shared folders are currently disabled on the host.

    How enable and use it?

    Hello

(VMware Shared Folders) vmhgfs driver will not work with ESX or ESXi, it is only for the workstation, Fusion, a player of nd. I would put in a virtual firewall that denies all access and dev environment, until you're ready to share data.

You can then open a port on the firewall and have a system to capture these data via the port. The alternative is to use something like a Keyspan USB hub IP and write data on a USB key, and then physically move to the side of the "production" of the House.

In general I find instead of much easier virtual firewall... VMsafe even won't work here.

  • VMware Tools missing in the Installation of VMware Player 7

    Hi all

If I try to install/upgrade to update VMware Tools after the Installation of VMware Player 7 no ISO will be connected to the virtual machine.

I checked the directory of Installation of VMware Player for the ISOs of the tools but no ISOs are there.

Can you help me out of this Situation or is it a missing element in the installer?

    Thank you

    Michael

I just downloaded VMware-player - 7.0.0 - 2305329.exe and installed under Windows 7 x 64 and had no problems with it automatically detect installed VMware Tools to the guest operating system to be downloaded and successfully downloaded.  Having said that, have you tried? : Player > file > Preferences... > download now all components

Maybe something is blocking you to download the VMware tools.

You could also do it manually by using the following tools from VMware for VMware Player 7.0.0.

Unzip the file, then run the executable result and it will silently install the file without any indication that he actually did like this isn't really so planned how to do even if it works!

    Hi Darius,.

    It's the amd64, but Linux > Debian 7 x 64 isn't available, I chose the 5 x 64 Version, it works.

I wonder if I should buy the 9 workstation to have the correct choice available..., I would do that.

I forgot to mention that I use version 8 of workstation.

    Thank you!

  • WS 7.1.4 - impossible to download VMware Tools/Update

    Hello!

Sorry for creating another post on this subject, I see many others have the same problem, but none actually provided what I needed.

When you try to update, it hangs on the connection ()https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds).

I have improved my vmware installation (download manually), but for some reason any packages msi with the tools got an error during installation and has never been installed, now miss me all VMware Tools.

When I try to visit the following url:

    https://softwareupdate.VMware.com/VMW-desktop

I get "File not found", and I tried this on several machines, on the 3 different inet-connections, all the same.

For some reason, I'm able to enumerate:

    http://softwareupdate.VMware.com/CDs/VMW-desktop/WS

But when I enter the 7.1.4 - folder, I get "file not found".

So that someone knows the reason for this, or can give me the direct link to all the tools for WS 7.1.4?

I looked everywhere on vmware.com for download stand-alone tools... It could have been so simple

    Thanks a bunch!

Verified that the tools aren't in a start for the default user menu or all users

Editing the entry under the registry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key

Changing registry keys did not work.  I'm out of ideas.  I guess that there is a way to do this.

  • Can't mount/cdrom to install vmware tools

I'm under VMWare Fusion 2.0 and you have installed the latest version of PC - BSD (7.02) (32-bit for the i386 architecture).  When I go to install the VMware tools, everything goes well until I have to mount the virtual cd.  When I entered the command (from the root) to mount/cdrom, I get an error message stating basically that there is no such file or directory.  I have already checked so far has not automount (and yes I'm Virtual Machine > install VMWare Tools.)  I've managed to install VMWare Tools in Ubuntu Linux 8.10, but I had to create my own disk image and a few other things to make it work, and I thought I'd try the same thing with PC - BSD, but I can't find the freebsd vmware - tools.tar.gz anywhere in the content of the app.  Can anyone help?

  • Upgrade VMware Tools-hardware virtual FOV 7.0 Build 130927.1406

    Hello

I tried to update the version of VMware FOV tools, but all that seemed to do is strip out...  Any ideas on how to retrieve and update, including the virtual hardware version also?

    Thank you very much.

    Alex.

    Hi Alex,

Installation of the tools is a feature of vCenter and VMware would better understand if there is a problem with the installation.  Their support may be able to help solve the problem you are experiencing.

That being said, I would like to offer assistance if I can.  I installed VMware tools in the same way that you have described.  In the past, if I had a problem installing, vCenter would let know me the reason why.  It would also seem that if tools have been "stripped" of the existing virtual machine.

I suspect that something similar is happening in your environment.

I can't be sure this link applies, but we found this VMware.

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1001354

VMware support should be able to help you further with the installation of the tools. Unfortunately, because it is not our product, I can only offer advice on how to solve the problem with the installation of the tools.

  • Is it possible to automate upgrades of VMware Tools with Foglight Standard Edition?

Its probably a stupid question but don't Foglight Standard Edition (6.5) have an automated function upgrade VMware Tools?

HI - not sorry that it's not, you will have to do it in vCenter. (there is no such thing a stupid question on these forums!)

  • Update the vmWare tools in VoP via vCenter

I'm still new to this community and I hope I'll catch up here soon, but I'm not sure of the update process the vmtools on the device of VoP. I know once I spunt'sand he upwards and configured the IP etc, the vCenter as the tools were obsolete. Tonight is our night of patch management and we'd get VoP abreast, as far as tools go. What is the process to get this done? Do I just shoot vCenter or are there steps to perform on the server of VoP so.

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hi David,

You can update VMWare Tools on the device in the same way as you would for any virtual machine of OpenSUSE Linux.  This can be done manually from the console if vCenter may not withdraw that, alone.

    I hope this helps!

  • Create a workflow to upgrade VMWare tools

We have an alert to tell clients VMWare tools is out of date, can someone create a workflow that would allow them to begin the upgrade.

ActionPack for VMware vCenter does not provide the necessary steps to create this workflow from including 5.5.8 release with vFoglight 6.5.1.

We CAN fix this in future versions. Stay tuned.
