fwtsqmfile00.sqm in my temp folder - are those malicious?

I have noticed in recent weeks that my TEMP in Windows 7 folder has many files of fwtsqmfile*.sqm in there. Are these legitimate or malicious? They seem to reappear after being deleted.

Hello

Method 1:

You can safely remove any file or folder in the temp folder. Some may be currently in use - if so, then they will remain.

You can try to delete the files in safe mode and check if it helps.

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Method 2:

It may be that a third-party application is causing this issue. Put the system at boot. Follow the steps mentioned in the article given below to configure the system to boot.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Once you have finished installing, follow step 7 article to start on normal startup.

Method 3:

Also, try to perform disk clean and check if it helps

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup

Also, try to run the antivirus online scan and check if you have any problem of virus.

You can delete all the files in the folder temp without problem, unless
they are used. If they are in use, Windows won't let you delete
    them.

However, if they are part of a virus, AVG may be able to remove them.

  • WHY THE WINDOWS TEMP FOLDER, THE FILES ARE PROTECTED, CAN NOT BE REMOVE?

CANNOT DELETE THE WINDOWS TEMP FOLDER ALL THE FILES ARE PROTECTED. WHY?

You can delete all. TMP using Disk Cleanup http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Delete-files-using-Disk-Cleanupfiles.  Of course, it won't delete those in use (not more), so, be sure you have not all open programs using temporary files, if you want to get everything.  The best way to do it is to do the cleanup right after the startup of the system.  The problem with OneCare is that it doesn't give you the option to choose the files you want to delete (as fair. TMP files) - she does everything that it considers unnecessary - and it can take hours to complete because of the antivirus and anti-spyware scans it includes (which can be excluded and drastically reduce the time but it is difficult to resist doing the chore together once you're already there and ready to do maintenance work).

While you're there, you should consider to optimize your system with http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Optimize-Windows-Vista-for-better-performance.

What are two tasks that should be part of a good monthly maintenance program to keep your PC/laptop running in peak condition.  There are other steps as well, that I would be happy to break it down if you want to know - but this isn't what you asked, so I'll skip that for now.

  • Deleting the file in the Temp folder

I have a file in my TEMP folder called BCGECE. TEMP

He said: I can not remove it because it is used by another person or program and to close all applications and try again. I have notheing ope, but still can not remove it?

    Suspect A malware.

What anti-virus application is installed? What's his current subscription? He has never been allowed to expire?

Download, install, update and run full scans with each of the following free tools. Do not run the scans at the same time. Each analysis will take a long time, so start an and then go for a non computer chore.  Leave the delete/quarantine everything it finds. Once completed, you can uninstall these applications.

Do a scan with the free eSet online scanner virus

    B. delete the file

Assuming that the file is not removed by one of the above tools, the following steps work almost always:

    • Close all running applications.
    • Open Task Manager (press CTRL + ALT + DELETE)
    • Open a command prompt window (start > run > cmd > OK)
    • Type the following in the black command prompt window, and then press ENTER after each line
      CD folder
dir b * (this step is only to list all the files to confirm that you have changed the appropriate directory, make sure that BCGECE.) TEMP is in the list)
    • In Task Manager, find explorer.exe in the processes list, select it, then click on "end process."  Your desktop will become empty except for open windows from the command prompt and the Task Manager
    • Return to the command prompt window and type the following line and press enter
      del BCGECE. TEMP
    • In the Task Manager, click file > new task (run...) and type explorer.exe in the area. Click OK. Your desktop should reappear
    • Close the Task Manager windows command prompt

If for any reason the foregoing does not, from the start in a "clean boot" configuration XP and delete the file in the usual way.   Use "Method 2" (manual method) to the linked article.

A standard procedure for the administration of the system is to reduce the amount of storage space used (typically a hard disk) by deleting temporary files.

That the file is in temp you can remove it because it is not a update file.

In addition to this review, if Windows update is working or not.

  • TEMP folder is larger than the hard disk

I have a couple of files ("CR_279B.tmp" and "chrome_12004") in my Temp folder which are very large, for a total of 121 GB, despite my hard drive only being 35 GB. All folders and files in these folders have strange symbols in names and file types. None of the types of files are the same. All dates are different and up to 70 years in the future. I can't delete these folders or files. When I try to get one of the two error messages: "cannot delete the file: cannot read from the source file or a disk." or "cannot delete [weird file name]: the file name, directory name or vollume label syntax is incorrect."

I was wondering if it was something to do with Google Chrome, so I uninstalled it, but it made no difference. There are other files with similar names but they seem much more normal. The relevant files were apparently created 2 days at 23:56.

Can someone help me find a way to delete these files and/or determine their origin.

    Thank you very much

First, do a system restore point and back up all your important data on an external support to protect against something going wrong.  If you have a backup image program, run it to backup the entire disk.

Then run chkdsk to check and correct the errors on the disk.

If the problem folders are still there, open a command prompt window, navigate to the temp folder and enter these commands to remove:

    RD/s CR_279B.tmp
    RD/s chrome_12004

  • WHO OWNS AND RUNS THE WINDOWS/TEMP FOLDER?

In some other recent discussions, we discussed an incident that looked like initially to a denial of Hack Service, in which an application presenting a malfunction stored files more daily in the folder w/t on my computer at home until they have got to be 40 GB in size, eventually turning off my computer because the hard drive was full.  The MVP took me through a series of 3rd - party / Windows Explorer/DOS scripts to identify and then to get rid of these files of zombie.  It was difficult because the application that generated gave them them the hidden attribute.  That made it difficult for the user to companion to see or delete.  My short term problem is resolved.  I'm still not sure that I have correctly identified the culprit.  The names of the offending files looked at with etilqs, which is sqlite spelled backwards.  In Googling that name, I see that many software companies, which some I use, have caused similar problems.

Long term I watch 170 folders and files still stored in Temp.  They are all relatively small, but some date back to 2006.  Many come divisions of Microsoft.  The name Temp seems to imply that they should all disappear some time, for example in a month.

    1. as long as the administrator of my computer at home, am I expected to inspect this file regularly and clean up what I suspect is obsolete, useless data?   There is something dangerous with the removal of just over a month old?

    2. If I detect what seems to be a misuse of the folder should I declare that Microsoft, FBI or who?  This authority will get the offending party to leave their unsafe practices?

3 applications to store temporary files with the hidden attribute, or any other attribute that inhibits the Windows disk utility clean erase them?  Which applies this rule?

    4. Why isn't a utility routine by clean obsolete Temp files and let Windows users of companion remain happily ignorant of these questions?

In short, MS has put this folder on my drive.  They have no responsibility to the limit who can put things here, if they can be hidden files or any other quality and cleaning issues or that is my responsibility as owner?

These topics can give ideas to the inactive spirits.  Should they be treated elsewhere?

    Hello

    1. What do you mean Detect / wrong use of the Temp folder?

Nothing dangerous on delete temporary files. Most programs will delete the temporary files when the program closes.

If you feel that someone is trying to get into their computer, make sure that all their security programs are up to date and working correctly.

  • Deleting a Temp folder

I am trying to remove the Windows Vista temp folder. When I followed the path to do so. He reads that it is impossible because the file is already open somewhere else.  I don't know where else, the file could be open to.  Can you please help me.

The easiest way to remove the contents of the temp folder is to use Disk Cleanup: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html...  When you come to the box options, just deselect everything except temporary folders and run the program (or you can do a better cleaning if you want and have the time).

If this does not work, try Unlocker to: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Unlocker.shtml , who sometimes works when Vista remove program is not.

The file could be opened for a number of reasons - running programs actively or in the background or something that does not close properly.  Try to reboot and see if you can remove it before open all programs other than those in the start menu.

If this does not work, try to start in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 when starting) and try to delete the folder temp there.

If this does not work, do a boot minimum http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929135?p=1 and see if you can remove the folder now.  However, do not forget to reboot the system in normal operation, when finished (it is included in the above procedures).

    I hope this helps.

    Hello

Thank you for the additional information.

Yesterday, I decided to register on IT * files .tmp on DVD and I removed them from the TEMP directory. I decided to do it because none of the processes they used at the time of my comment. I compared the the event logs for any new warnings or errors, but mistakes are appearing as before removal. The errors are:
-The parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error: the service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices is associated to him.
    -Could not load the plug-in module. (GUID = {56F9312C-C989-4E04-8C23-299DEE3A36F5}) (Error code = 0 x 80042019)

I haven't checked on the first error, but it appears in the system log because I erased the corrupt system log - also before deleting the files.
The second is well known 'Vaio Entertainment Database Services' error (in the application log) and everyone invites you to remove this service from startup list. So maybe I'll do it.

My Vaio has now extra 7.5 GB of free space and has no performance or other problems (so far).

Today, I tried this (sfc/scannnow) system scan and the log is perfectly clean. Nothing has been repaired.
Also checkdisk returns nothing abnormal so I think the albums * .tmp not fail at any other SW. The other issue is how they were created, but as my log files have been corrupted (another known problem of vista), I will probably never know the answer.

If new sth will appear on the subject (e.g. new TOP * .tmp files), I'll write again.

    Thank you once again.
