HA and SAN traffic on dedicated NIC port

Hello

We have a small vmware network 2 HP servers and a SAN. We buy ESS Vsphere with HA.

If I understand correctly, it is considered preferable for HA and SAN traffic on a port on the network adapter.

What I need is help with how to implement that.

We will have 2 spare nic per server ports dedicate to this, one for HA and one for SAN traffic.

Currently, we use 2 ports per server in swarming mode connected to a subnet and two ports more connected to another subnet, for a total of 4 ports per server. We will buy a 6 port of HP network card very soon, it is most important that they do for our DL 365 HP. This will give us the extra 2 ports per server, to devote to SAN and HA traffic.

OR should we just use the spare ports 2 Teemed in the SAN and forget to devote to the HA.

Thank you!!!

Peter

HA the traffic runs on the service console / management network. It is advisable to separate, but it is not a must. I will say if you don't have enough NIC to use the grouping of network cards to introduce redundancy, it is more important than anything else, when you run HA.

  • Traffic on the management ports load

Can someone tell me what traffic is running on the management port?  I install vsphere 5.1 with 3 hosts, vmotion and san iscsi drive. I intend to separate management traffic on a closed network of 1 GB in which the management ports will connect to a 1 GB switch which will have a port connected to the global network.  Use VMotion cela this port strongly with its activities?

The cluster will be slightly loaded with only 8 to 10 vm across all 3 four hosts of Quad Core processor.

I intend to connect with NICs 10Gb iscsi san and dedicated switch.

If I had to, I could use a 10G switch to the management network.

The individual virtual machine will be nic interfaces 1 Gb individual key of the network if necessary.

If you could tell me the documents that would also be appreceiated.

    any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thank you

"Best Practice" is said to have a network card dedicated to the management, and a dedicated for vmotion. Ideally different subnets / VLAN.

In smaller environments, but I often will create this:

vSwitch0 with 2 network cards (if everything goes well on the cards separated/asics) and with the management and vmotion vmkernel port. It works very well, thank you very much despite sometimes described as not "best practices." Well - I think that the concern is that in situations of heavy vmotion (especially when storage vmotion is concerned) traffic management could be hampered/flooded. I just never saw him in the real world, although in environments with more than 4-5 guests I always put in place in accordance with the "best practices" just because...

vswitch 1 with 2 maps, 2 vmkernel ports (each with its own ip address) for iSCSI

vswitch 2 with 2 (or more) network cards and however many ports of VM / VLANS are necessary.

(just to be clear, the 'best practice' would vswitch 0 with 2 network cards and 2 vmkernel ports that configured in the management and the other as vmotion.) Each nic will be dedicated to a vmkernel, but available failover for others...)

  • Config network for SAN traffic

Please see the image as an attachment. It is what I currently have, the one after is what I think I need to do.

Here's my number; I think I have install the networking incorrectly for my esx boxes hit the SAN.  For now, it's that everything works fine, however I think I may have made a few extra STREP that does not need to do.  Right now I have a NIC deticated to two different vSwitches which are useless, but SAN traffic.  the more I watch this, more I think that I should have used a unique vSwitch on every box of esx and just added the necessary ports console and core it.  So I would have a unique vswitch on each box dedicated to SAN traffic, each vSwitch would have two network cards current with both console and two ports of kernel.

Maybe I'm just beating a dead horse because they're all going two do the same thing, but maybe it's something smarter and simpler to go with scenario after since they can load the balance between the two and failover works better.  ???   My biggest concern is, can I have two console different and two ports in different kernel, both on different subnets, to the same vSwitch?

    Thanks for any advice.

Yes, your thought is good. having two NICS on a unique vswitch will give you more options for failover and load balancing. Having also several ports console and kernal on the same vswitch is not a problem.

  • ESXi 5.1 separating SAN traffic w / VLAN

So I learned this week that vSphere 5.1 VmKernels no longer support multiple gateways.  This causes me some confusion with how to properly configure my for my SAN.  I thought it was best practice to separate traffic, so I created VLANS separated for management and for data traffic (SAN).  Since they are in different subnets, they have their own front door.  When you try to configure it I started having a few problems before I realized that the gateway that must remain the same.  I contacted VMware and initially they said gateways may be changed before finally stating that they were incorrect and that there may be 1 door entry.  The answer I got on their part at this time there is that I don't in fact want to split the VLAN and leave the front door on my vmkernel for only san traffic they stated that both that my VLAN was correctly setup that vmware if you just know where to send data and it wouldn't matter.  When this 'magic' was not they told me I must have a problem of vlan and they couldn't help me.

Could someone give me an idea as to what the best method is to do this?  I found an article that says you can manually add a second gateway via the CLI, but when I tried I received an error message indicating that the route existed.

    VLAN 18 (172.27.18.x/24 w/gw 172.27.18.1) - management

    VLAN 40 (172.27.40.x/24 w/gw 172.27.40.1) - data/SAN

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Greg,.

    Here is an example of configuration using VSS;

-vSwitch0 = management is on VLAN130 (port, no VLAN ID configured access)

-vMotion = vSwitch1 is on VLAN131 (port, no VLAN ID configured access)

-vSwitch2 = IPStorage is on VLAN132 (access port, no configured VLAN ID) - L2 subnet gateway disabled

-vSwitch3 = comments Networking (ports of junction, tagging VLAN)

In this example, management and IPStorage be separated on different VLAN and for more security VLAN IPStorage has the gateway disabled (so traffic can be routed elsewhere).

From the storage point of view, simply presented in your storage space (NFS exports for example) on the same VLAN as your port IPStorage kernel VM (or VLAN132 in this example).

    See you soon,.

  • Host NIC ports separated from NAT in workstation Pro 12

I'm trying to setup a single NAT connected to a NIC port. The reason for this is I need the other NIC port to run the host machine, but not have it included with the NAT as the other port of the NETWORK card is connected to a VPN that I need NAT to connect with.

I solved my problem. Initially, I was creating persistent static routes. For some reason, it did not work. I created them as non-persistent static routes and I was able to exercise the functions that I had on other subnets via comments. I created a batch file to run on starting of the host so that the roads will always be there. I think that adding additional features for the environment NAT to allow to separate multiple network cards on a host computer would not be a difficult task for VMware Workstation as a NETWORK on vSphere host ports or other products can be manipulated more easily.

  • a few questions about ESXi and SAN CF with HP P2000 G3

    Hello everyone!

I am new to ESXi and SAN, then I need help for her.

I have Encolosure C7000 system with 4 blades BL460c already installed ESXi 5.1U1 (HP custome ISO image). Everything works fine now, but I do not understand something:

-What is the management network which I use vSphare Client to connect to? It is a private network to manage ESXi servers what difference with VMnetwork used by Virtual Machines? Because I've set up an IP address for this connection manually, but it is of course separate with IP addresses, I used on Virtual Machines.

-If my system has problem, so I have to reinstall ESXi, license keys can be used again? Already, I have 8 license key for 4 blades (2 CPUs per server), but they have not yet used. Because I am new to ESXi, cause I had to reinstall ESXi several times to understand.

-When I install successful ESXi, I don't know how to start working with SAN. What should I configure P2000 before it be plugged into the SAN switch? Or I can plug it then config later? Because I don't see it on the ESXi server. And on the OS I installed on the Guest Virtual Machines, I see nothing new in Device Manager. I thought that this guest operating system will detect the mezzanine card. But I see only mezzanine card that connect to the P2000 by SAN switch in ESXi (see image here http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/684/dsc04088k.jpg ). To my knowledge, I think that ESXi server have to detect the P2000 as hardware device. Can someone teach me step by step install and configure a San on ESXi? Or show me a tutorial because I searched but only iSCSI results.

Yes, it's a separate network used only for traffic management between ESXi hosts and vCenter - it is also the network used to connect to the environment - that's different, then the network used by your virtual machines

Yes the license keys can be reused, and if you use vCenter licenses will be managed by vCenter

Yes, you will be able to configure the San later - by default, the virtual machine will not see the SAn, as it is virtualized by your ESXi host - all the VM will see is a virtual SCSi disk - this doc's guide to vmware for storage - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-511-storage-guide.pdf - you can visit the website of HP they might have documentation on configuring P2000 for vSphere -.

  • Tips on Setup with 2 blades of Sun and San

    Hi all

Can you give me some advice with a new configuration: we lack a POC of VMware view, and we have 2 blades of Sun X 6250. The two are running ESX 3.5U3, but only one is connected to a San.

The first blade runs vCenter and VMware View and virtual machines. The other (connected to the San) runs the virtual desktop (XP)

This configuration is chosen only for budget reasons. We intend to connect to the second blade in the SAN, but it requires a switch of fiber optics and a HBA. But there is no budget for the time ;-(

Each blade has 2 NETWORK interface card and the two are connected. We have created a vSwitch; service console, the computer network, virtual and vmkernel. The two NIC is added to this vSwitch as active to spread the load.

Is it still a requirement for VMotion have a private NETWORK map, or can it be shared?

I thought it was possible to make a VMotion, while a virtual machine is running without shared storage? It is also possible with the vCenter running under VM? It would be nice for the correction.

    Any other tips or advice?

Thanks in advance. We appreciate it.

    Wouter

It may be shared, but the speed should be 1 GB

    vMotion requires shared storage

It is also possible with the vCenter running under VM? It would be nice for the correction.

Yes vCenter can function as a virtual machine

I want to measure pressure several times on a pcb, where I connect the ports of digital multimeters to the card using simple cards. Switching between the different voltages is done using simple. If the black port of DMM (the second from the top photo) is connected to the Earth to give the measure correct volt.

And then I want to measure current through different lines. The problem is here. Given that two measurement types share a port, how do I get the correct voltage and current measurement? The second port of top would be grounded, so I can't use the method of measuring the voltage across the line through a resistance with a known value, since then the second port must not be connected to the ground. How can I use the current state of the DMM measurement? How measure current? Are there examples of this? Tried looking through manuals, but could not find the good starting points.

so I can't use the method of measuring the voltage across the line through a resistance with a known value, since then the second port must not be connected to the ground.

  • ASM and SAN issues HQ

    Hello

I have a few problems in ASM 4.6 and SAN HQ 3.0.

    SAN AC 3.0:
I get alerts email saying that network connectivity is not even if there is no network connectivity issues.  The message is below:

    • [ID: 14.2] A connection could not be made.
    • The HQ SAN server issued the group SNMP requests, some or all failed.  This condition is probably due to the congestion of the network or has no network connectivity.  The server will try again in 60 seconds.  Check your network connectivity and that the storage group is online.  If the problem persists, contact your Dell support provider.

    ASM 4.6:
For some reason when ASM is refreshing the host, it never ends with one of the hosts (in a cluster).  It sticks to the discovery of Cluster connectivity and I don't understand why.  I also get e-mail alerts saying that Smart snapshots failed.

    Can someone please?

    Thank you.

There SANHQ available from eqlsupport.dell.com/.../download.aspx 3.0.1

    From the release notes:

Elements fixed in SAN HQ Version 3.0.1

The following question has been corrected in the version 3.0.1 SAN headquarters maintenance release:

Previously, after SAN HQ 3.0 upgrade HQ SAN server could not connect to the newsgroups under firmware version 7 or more and SAN HQ has published an alert (HQ SAN event ID: 14.2) indicating that some or all SNMP requests the group failed.

    This condition is resolved.

I need manage the bandwidth used, PowerConnect 6224 traffic collision and packet traffic. I downloaded the MIB from the Dell support site and I saw thar there are about 105 MIB in the downloaded file. My question is: in what Mib, I can find the OID which allow me to monitor the above?

    Thanks in advance

    Rogerio

Unfortunately, there is not a complete list of the different OID in different MIB. In order to find this info to simply browse through the different MIB seeking the OID, you need. We did some looking through the MIB and found these OIDs that can help you. Another thing to keep in mind is that the MIB downloaded are in general of a group of switches. So there are situations where a /OID MIB listed will work for a certain model of switch with certain level of firmware.

    RMON-MIB

    FastPath-cos-qos-mib

Another method, some people have had success, done using a SNMP walk.

    http://www.snmpsoft.com/freetools/snmpwalk.html

I hope this information helps. The method of importation for these MIBs can change based on the management/tracking software that you use.

  • Connect FI two directly attach FCoE storage and SAN switches

Nobody tells me if I can connect FI two directly attach FCoE and SAN storage switches also, as you can see in the diagram of connected network?

If so, should I FC Switch function Mode? Any concerns should I consider?

Or the best solution would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The UCS will be in Switch Mode FC, which means that it has a default area.  We cannot make a Zone merge with Brocade because we have no control to set up specific items such as domain and other articles CF IDS that need to be changed when you connect a Cisco FC switch to a Brocade.

Usually in this situation with a 5 k or a MDS you might be placed in mode of interoperability, which changes the default settings and we will talk to them together - in this case, you can't change these settings, so the only supported configuration is CF Cisco at Cisco.

    See you soon,.

  • Please share your entries on Eg1 and Eg2 dependence of voice messaging port to be hardware based or can be added on a basis of carta ala?

    Hello

Please share your entries on Eg1 and Eg2 dependence of voice messaging port to be hardware based or can be added on a basis of carta ala?

1 pls correct if wrong, the number of voicemail ports depends on which model of supported connection of the unit hardware is selected. In addition, the number of voice messaging ports cannot be added as a carta ala and it comes with the hardware.

Eg1; with the unit Connection8.6 on MCS7845 standalone server would support 250 voicemail ports and if the connection of the unit is used in active-active mode then total 500 voicemail ports would be available with the cluster of connection of the unit.

Eg2; On a platform of the UCS, the UCS C210 M2 Server connection unit 8.6 with capacity of 10,000 EGGS of voicemail, the voicemail ports would be available:

(i.) the limits of stand-alone Configuration:

    • 150 ports G.711 and G.729a (combined TUI, VUI or TTS)
    • 35 ports iLBC or G.722

(ii) limits for the active/active Cluster Configuration:

    • 300 ports G.711 and G.729a (combined TUI, VUI or TTS)
    • 70 ports iLBC or G.722

(iii) EGGS during model for the Connection8.6 with 10000 EGGS Voicemail capacity 300 GB HARD drive unit is installed on UCS C210 M2 server, he would in his own assign vCPU = 4, RAM = 6 GB, vHDD = 300 GB 150 ports of voicemail and.

If more than 150 voicemail ports are necessary, then we can have the Connection8.6 of the unit using the active/active mode, then 300 voicemail ports would be available.

However, if the number of necessary voicemail ports is more than 300, then need to install, Connection8.6 20 000 unit model voicemail OVA on UCS C210 M2 Server capacity. This model has according to the capacity of voice messaging port:

    Stand-alone Configuration limits:

    • 250 ports G.711 and G.729a (combined TUI, VUI or TTS)
    • 60 ports iLBC or G.722

Limits for the active/active Cluster Configuration:

    • 500 ports G.711 and G.729a (combined TUI, VUI or TTS)
    • iLBC 120 ports or G.722

    Concerning

    Sumit

There is a hardware support and licensing aspect for the number of ports.  From a support perspective, the number of ports is limited by the physical server hardware (e.g., platform) or virtual resources (i.e., as specified in the files of EGGS).  However, the number of ports, you can configure is also based on how many ports you are licensed for the.  For example, you can have a server that can support 250 ports but if your license file contains only 16 ports then you will only be able to configure 16 ports on the system.  I have a scenario where a customer needed to add more ports; However, I don't think it would be a problem.

When you talk about port capacities for the connection of the unit, I would recommend that you focus more on the ability of the server port unique compared to the ability of the cluster for normal operations.  Connection of the unit is designed as a cluster in active / active in the intention to provide 100% failover of services if a server is offline.  The recommended design is that the Subscriber must manage all calls with the possibility of overflow to the transformation Editor.  IOW, if you want to support 500 simultaneous calls on a consistent basis but each server is capable of supporting 250 ports on its own then only a failure of a server would immediately block 50% of services.
