  The way I would do is to copy the 'image' on a separate layer, select, make a solid white, it stop the lower layer to shine through.

  Then put the original image on a different layer separated with its opacity, pass over the layer solid white image.

  Apologies for the long description, but which should at least provide much info for anyone who might have a possible solution for me. Essentially what would be great is if someone could advise me how to take the code of case 1 and apply it to a piece of 'background' coding as the type that is contained in html {...} in Case 2 . Like I said, it is almost there, but I just can't operate atm after trying to combine different bits of code this way and that...   There is a Snow Leopard update that would probably help.  It's called 10.6.8 Combo update.  Download and apply.  Then discover iTunes.
