High memory usage of the Windows Explorer (explorer.exe)

I recently discovered that explorer.exe (windows Explorer) takes about 50% of my CPU (i.e. 1 full core on 2) use. Kill the process and it works again, solved the problem. Use the microsoft task explorer (by systeminternals), it's explorer.exe itself using the cpu. I have Vista SP1 with all the latest patches with IE8.

I solved the problem by disabling explorer.exe in my prefetch folder

  • Data execution prevention-window Explorer error when I try to access the windows Explorer, and more particularly when I try to watch videos.

Original title: data execution prevention-window Explorer error

Data execution prevention launches when I try to access the windows Explorer, and more particularly when I try to watch videos. So I tried to turn off DEP for windows Explorer. Now, I can access my videos, but they all have text on them that says video PHOTO, & www.jpg.com. I have not downloaded new software recently, so I don't know where it comes from. I ran my antivirus sofware and malwarebytes, and my system is to come clean. How can I remove this from my videos? Thank you!

This isn't how to diagnose and repair the DEP errors - especially not Windows Explorer DEP errors.

I saw that error and even if it says access denied it will actually save your changes.  After you disable all move forward and apply then restart and see if it kept the changes.  If it's not then I hope that you are able to borrow a disc it would in time look for resettlement. • How to adjust the default column is displayed in the Windows Explorer screens

I would like to change the concrete by default of my columns when you use Windows Explorer screen. It bothers me that I can't find a way to change the columns that appear by default whenever I open a new window.

I want to display more or less than the default value. Everytime I open a window a new session with the Explorer, it displays update, Type, size and tags by default.
I know how to add or remove a column, but it is a pain when you have to do every time especially if I have more than 10 windows open at a time.
There is some great information available especially with the content of media like music, videos or photos. There are many categories to choose from which must be wound up manually like BitRate, author, size, Date acquired, update, etc...

Is it possible to change this so that by default, I can choose the columns to display by default. Do not have to adjust them each time I open a new window.

It is a 64-bit version of Vista Ulitimate, but if there is a response, I think it applies to all Vista OS...

    Hello Chuckbytes,

Thank you for posting.  I have a solution to your problem.  This fix is to modify the registry.  If you do not want to edit the registry, and then don't do these steps.  Also always do a backup of your registry before making any changes.
These steps are courtesy of Médard Ghazi of Tweakguides.
Please let me know if this helps you.

Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk

    Changing folder views

For example, you can set your directory \Users\[username]\Downloads to display in the Details view, but if you copy a picture, song or video in the directory, the next time that view you the content they can be display large icons mode. Even if go you back and change the view type, it can reset itself once more the next time you go a different file type in this directory.

    Solution

    Open the registry editor-
    Navigate to the following keys:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]

Right-click on the bags key in the left pane and select Remove, and then do the same for BagMRU. This will remove most of the existing customizations for things like window sizes, positions and views. While still in the same place in the registry editor, you must manually recreate one of these keys, with a new parameter. Right-click on the following key in the left pane:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]

Create a new key called bags to replace the one you just removed. Right-click on the bags, select new > key and the name of this new AllFolderskey. Right click on AllFolders, select new > key and name the new key Shell. The final result should look like this:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]

Now left-click on the last key Shell and in the right pane click right-click in an empty area and select new > string value. Name this new string FolderType and once created, double-click on it and in the value data box, you can set the default view, that all files will be initially (unless otherwise stated) by entering one of the following values:

    NotSpecified
    Contacts
    Documents
    Music
    Photos

For example, if you enter Documents in the FolderType value data box (which I recommend), then all the files for which you do not manually set a default view to the standard Documents records display as you set it.

Now, in Windows Explorer, go to your \Users\[username]\ directory and for each of the folder main types down there (Documents, photos, music, videos), make sure that you set the view as you want, including things like choose the columns to show, and what each of them is, the size of any icons/thumbnails, how they are sorted, etc. When you make the changes for each folder click organize at the top of the Windows Explorer, select "Folder and Search Options", go to the display tab and click on the button "apply to folders. This will set this view to all folders of this type even, and this method also means that should you copy files to another type in a folder, it will not change this folder view settings - in the future that the settings should stay exactly as you let them.

Update: There is a step more that can help ensure that these parameters remain fixed. Navigate to the following key:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]

Left click on the Shell key and in the right pane, if you can see BagMRU Size then it is not necessary to take this step. If she's not there though, right click and select new > DWORD 32-bit value and name BagMRU Size. Now, set this value to 10000 in decimal mode (or 2710 in hexadecimal mode).

  • Family Vista premium SP2 - NAS - I can see it, can open its highest level, can go through it with the windows Explorer - strangely I can browse it with windows internet explorer 8 - what's up with windows Explorer?

I have a WD NAS, who has worked through my Explorer windows until recently - now I can access only through Internet Explorer 8 using FTP.

I use to be able to open the windows Explorer and able to 'network' and click on the NAS and enter my name/password and access all folders and files to the breast. Now I go into windows Explorer and I can see the NAS and I can click on it and enter my name and password, and it shows even the top-level folders-

I can't do any further due to the standard contextual windows alert, and the message goes between the "network name is not available" and the message "already mapped the drive. I have not noticed a model and did not install anything at the same time. Don't try to do wireless, the NAS is ethernet wired to my router and my router to my computer - no router updates/changes - no updates/changes NAS - no I do not have the mapped drives sitting over there, yes I'm admin on the computer and the NAS server - there is no noticeble change I can find - not firewall , no anitvirus, no microsoft updates - anything good for troubleshooting?

    Hi Dgbjr68,

    Try the following steps.

    Step 1

Check the behavior in SafeMode with network and post back the result.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

    Step 2

You can also try to temporarily disable the firewall on your computer and check the status.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off

NOTE: Enable the firewall after trying this step.

  • Free disk space in the Windows Explorer status bar.

In Windows 7, I wonder how to display disk space is free in the Windows Explorer. In XP, you could see how much space was free down in the status bar. He would say how objects and disk space that was free. How can I activate this in Windows 7?

Return to the root that particular drive is annoying, when I should be able to see how much free space I have for any folder.

    Thank you.

These 2 features have been removed from the latest version of windows and really help to speed up the use of every day:

Display the amount of free space
Display of the total size of the files in folders.

How this two features can be added to the status bar?
