Host Update Utility always useful to patch 4.1?

So, apparently, that the host update utility provided with vSphere 4.0 client does not support upgrading a version 4.0.x of ESXi 4.1 and you must do so by vCLI for those of us who do not have vCenter. Fine.

While it is a regular update patches? Currently, the host update utility seems to grind through a sweep of the host of a host 4.1 for a long time then says it is up to date, but it is not clear if this is because there is no update 4.1 out again, or he is simply lying because he made the version 4.0 updates checks only. If she is not really checked 4.1 updates, how users free regular ESXi without vCenter supposed to update and maintain their hosts? Is VMware we expected trolling through the downloads pages periodically to check if there is a new version of build manually update or expect that you subscribe to the explosion of e-mail complete VMware just so that we can update notifications?

I posted a query similar to a return of the week, and although I've seen some answers, they only suggested that "no" was the answer.

It is very frustrating - Update Manager is a pain in the butt and "cancel the job, restart your server, put in maintenance mode manually and try again", advice that I usually get, somewhat defeats all ideals "automatically patch your environment" Update Manager pushes.

You can never vihostupdater.pl command-line if you were aware. Its a real pain.

  • Patching host with Host Update Utility

I have a clean install of ESXi 171294 (VMware image) and I ran the Host Update Utility for the first time. Three plots have shown (see image) and my question is whether it is necessary to install the two patches firmware (2009-07-09 and 2009-08-06) or just the latter list (2009-08-06)?

Is not a firmware patch a full picture of replacement, so the 2009-08-06 firmware would include the 2009-07-09 bugs?

    Thank you

The host update utility will show all patches available for VMware and that apply to the selected host, as users will like to choose what patches they want to take. It is just this flexibility of selection. The utility will scan against selected patches and will tell you that can be consumed by the host that you are running.

If you are at the level of GA 4.0 then it will show the two patches published so far if necessary, you can choose which you want to apply based on the identified patches in the respective articles of the patches. Each released hotfix will have an article explaining how fix it, so let say < X > patch fixes issue A and B and < Y > corrective patch question A, B and c. is released after x, but the user may not want the extra difficulty C so he can always go to patch < X >.

    Thank you

  • vSphere Host Update Utility & ESXi 4.0 Upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade a system ESXi 3.5 to ESXi 4.0. I use the guide at:

    http://www.VM-help.com/esx40i/ESXi40_upgrade_without_virtualcenter.php

When I lauch the vSphere Host Update Utility 4.0, I have a popup that informed me it must download the patches to enable the fix on a functional level. Problem is the patches are not download or install. Did someone knows a way I can manually download the patch and install it? Here is what says the update utility:

vSphere Host Update Utility to download the patches from the VMware fix repository to enable the functionality of patch. You still want to connect to the VMware patch repository?

    Yes or no

For the upgrade process, you need the full ZIP file for ESXi 4.0.

Patching is the next step, but the fist you need to do the upgrade step.

  • How to patch/update ESXi 4.1 (free) now Host Update Utility went

    Hello

If I understand right now, I need to use vihostupdate (from vsphere CLI) or esxupdate (running in a terminal on the server) to install the new updates/patches on the ESXi 4.1 server.

The "Host Update Utility" would also find new patches online, this is not possible with vihostupdate or esxupdate? and if no, then how and where can I download new patches/updates?

  • Error with Host Update Utility when I scan for patches

    Hello

I try to use Host Update Utility to update my server ESXi 4.0 to ESXi 4.0 Update 1, but I get the following error when I press the button "Scan For Patches. The error is "an error has occurred. Download failed ". So, I started looking in communities, if someone had the same error and I think that the problem is due to I install my VI Client and Host Update Utility in Windows XP SPANISH version. Could be the language that I use in my OS (Spanish) the cause of this problem?

I tell you that I do not use any kind of proxies. I am in a private network and between internet and I have only a router. I can navigate anywhere on the internet without any problem and I have no restrictions on what are the ports that I use. The router is reserved for NATS.

The other issue is . Displaying the HUU configuration file (settings.config) I see the URL for the variable "RemoteDepot" is "https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/index.xml". "" This URL is correct or VMware has changed it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Warlock.

I have the same problem. Host Update Utility does not work with windows XP Spanish, you must install Windows Vista Spanish Profesional.

I think that vmware cares not Spaniards.

  • Use the host update utility or install ESXi4 Installable Update 2?

I have 3 ESXi 4.0 host and you want to upgrade to 4.0 Update 2 and never really used the host update utility, but I doubt if Host Update Utility allows some dirt or something.

I've read in a book but said nothing, while it records the settings of network, security and storage.

What could be better? Use the host update utility or install ESXi4 Installable Update 2?

    Kind regards!

If you have found this information useful, please consider awarding points to 'Correct' or 'Useful'*.

Host update utility is the safest way to do it - and you will save the local VMFS more your configuration.

If you go directly to the host with the installation CD, your configuration will not be saved, just the VMFS (that with ESXi). In addition, is a way of failure to take in charge of the upgrade.

Dirty? With ESXi, I really doubt...

  • Help: update/fixes Essentials, no SAN no host Update Util

As very probably know VMware in their infinite wisdom have discontinued support and development of Host Update Utility in v4.1. I currently manage an Essentials environment with DAS only (without SAN), and VCenter installed as a virtual machine on a host. In the past, I have always used the Util to update host patch and update of my hosts. Instead of this change, it seems that the only options are manually fixes using vihostupdate or install or use Update Manager. The latter is useless for us since we do not have a HOLY and cannot update the host who would be Manager update as a virtual machine (no both VMotion etc). In the past, I would just run host Util update, do check it out for the latest patches of VMware, and then run the patch install - he took care to locate the patches and apply them in the correct order. What is the best game plan now that this util is gone? Where can you easily check the patch repository, download the correct patches and apply them in the correct order? Maybe I missed something, but would appreciate anyone entry on the correction of strategies in this scenario.

Yes, you can apply all the patches together and atlast you can go to restart ESXi

  • What happens to the cleaning after upgrade with Host Update Utility?

    Hello

I've just updated my esx 3.5 to 4.0 using the host update utility.

I noticed that in the data store, it is now the iso esx4.0 and an esxconsole-* folder.

These 2 are always required? or is it safe to remove them after the upgrade? They take a part of the review of the space on the local data store.

    Thanks in advance!

The .iso file may be deleted.

But the esxconsole-* file is the COS for COS vmdk.

If you are unable to delete this folder and you cannot delete the related VMFS data store.

    Alguem sabe algo a respeito?

    Abraço.

    Sena.

I don't know the reason why VMware has dropped support for the 'Host Update Utility'. For a more recent version, you actually have to use command line tools, unless you have "Update Manager" available.

    See for example:

  • VMware Host Update Utility 4.1 VI does not settle with the VI Client?

I installed the VI Client 4.1 and noticed that it is not seeking to install the VI host update utility. After installation, it is not installed. I don't see a separate download for VI host updated. Does anyone know how to install it now? Thank you.

As far as I can tell the vSphere Host Update Utility has been abandoned and you must use the vihostupdate through the CLI. Good luck, thank you.

  • vSphere host update utility & Internet without computer

Stuck in a bit of a puzzle here, is there a way to get the updates installed through the utility 'vSphere host update' for ESXi without an Internet connection? Heck, I'll settle for any method that does not require vCenter. Before I use to download updates on a USB key and use the Infrastructure Client v2.5 (for ESXi 3.5)... which no longer be an option in the "vSphere host update utility. Comments welcome.

Have you tried vihostupdate.pl the vCLI. The example here is ESXi 3.5 but he's going to pretty much the same for 4.0 http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/esx_3i_rcli/vihostupdate.php.
