  For ESXi free edition update official method, is through the vihostupdate command line utility. If you have a paid version of vCenter Server, you can use the Update Manager.

  The host update utility will show all patches available for VMware and that apply to the selected host, as users will like to choose what patches they want to take. It is just this flexibility of selection. The utility will scan against selected patches and will tell you that can be consumed by the host that you are running.

  If you are at the level of GA 4.0 then it will show the two patches published so far if necessary, you can choose which you want to apply based on the identified patches in the respective articles of the patches.
