How can I automate the numbering of pages between different files?

I use InDesign CS2

to set up a magazine.  The magazine has about 50-60 ads in it, and each ad is in a separate file, until the magazine is assembled.  There is a guide at the end of the magazine that show the basic information in a format of grid on advertisers in the magazine.  The formatting for the grid is controlled with tab stops to reinvest as advertisers come and go from point to point. I need to add a new column to indicate which page the ad associated with the entry of the grid is on, but I can't find a way to automate it.  The only solution I have found so far is to copy the phone number of the advertiser and to find other bodies in the magazine once it is assembled.

Is it possible to automate this task, remembering that these ads are all contained in separate files until the magazine is assembled? I find the help topics on the subject of indexes, hyperlinks, bookmarks, etc. to be very confusing and not very useful.

It depends on how save you or receive outside ads. These days most advertisers submit PDF, but that you're creating ads to identity card and recording in native format. Personally, I save the original work in .indd for future editing, but export a copy in PDF format and the place to display ads. You can place the PDF file in different numbers as much as you like and there is no risk of leaving anything out when you copy and paste.

In addition, more information on the guide as only the page numbers there.  I need to have page numbers fit in the existing format to make it work properly (obviously, I'll have to add a column). A table of contents can contain all of these additional data?

It's not what I was picturing, so, no, I don't think that OCD would help a lot.  If you upgrade to CS4 you can probably use cross references that are now a native function. In CS2, you might be able to at least semi-automate paging using the cross-reference of sectors de Jong script: Script for referrals, including a tutorial on how to use it (updated April 10, 2006)

I can't imagine an easy way to do it in any version, i.e. anything that doesn't require not to add some sort of marker to each announcement and perhaps update the table if things are moving (that part is not onereous - just run the script again). Maybe someone else has another idea.

    In the model:

    3. Select the code in the drop down attribute
    4. If there is no ID attribute then click Add and type the ID in the next dialog box

    8. Save the model and update the child page

    In each page of the child:

    1. Edit > properties of the model
    2. Select the id attribute in the list (it's probably the only one listed)
    3. Change its name in the box to any name matches your CSS rule for the active state of the page

    In the Add arguments box, I put in: Wildlife.mp3

    At the beginning of area (optional), I put in: C:\Reminders

    which is a folder that I created in the C drive.

    Wildlife.MP3 file is of course in the C\Reminders folder.

    I have Windows 7.

    Thanks for your reply. I'll do some checking double and let you know what happens. I just printed page 36 of the User Guide, and it printed fine. The other document that did not print correctly was a form which I had filled out on the internet and then print a copy of what I had filled out. I'll try to print a page or two of my Mac Pages document and see if that print very well. I appreciate your comments. Thanks again.

    I have a numbered list that I'm trying to change. I deleted one of the numbered list items and now need to change the remaining numbers so that they are all consecutive. While in PDF Edit I can change the text using the normal keyboard shortcuts . but I can't change the numbers of.

    In change the cursor won't even go to the number.

    I am well aware of how to move between the layers, using the keyboard.  I also know how to find my keyboard shortcuts (Edition > keyboard shortcuts).  I am unable to find, however, is where can I change the shortcut to move between layers.  I searched the whole shortcut list a few times now and I don't see it anywhere.  What Miss me?

    The answer is simple.  Shortcuts of Photoshop not all are editable. Some shortcuts cannot be changed.  ALT +, (Select low layer Visible), Alt +. (Select the Visible layer), Alt + [(select the next lower layer Visible), and Alt +](upper layer select next Visible) are the keys to select and scroll through the layers. Only the Visible layer can be selected with these shortcut keys.   This means that you cannot solve any of the visible layers in the Action in a relative way.  They would need to be address by the name of the layer that is a problem for the layer names need not be unique.  There may be more than one layer of the same name.
