  How to show or hide various toolbars?

  If you are using JPA/EJB then you can write in your session bean method to access the EntityManager and using createNativeQuery to perform the update:

  Two points.

  First of all, I see that you have forms stars in your image, but that does not mean that you need a star-shaped slice. You can use a little square that is centered on your star.
