How do I 'flatten' an Illustrator file?

I have a logo that I work with a lot of layers and sublayers and now I would like to reduce or "flatten" all in a single layer to use as a logo without the clutter many layers that it took to make this work. I tried "flatten" but which retains even layers and sublayers. I don't know what else to try. I want what's on top of appear and layers below to be sandwiched down so that everything looks as if it was on the screen. In Photoshop, I just flatten and get the result I'm looking for on a layer, but in Illustrator, she not cooperating the way I would like that there. I've converted all types of paths, so that is done.

Where should I go here to get the file 'flattened' I'm after?

TIA,

Ken

I selected all, cut to the Clipboard and pasted into a new document... What do you hear? This does not change the many layers are still.
