How do I know if I have a keylogger

Yesterday, I got a pop up on Safari which even told me and told me to call a number of Time Warner (my broadband provider), because I had malicious software.  He had nothing to click on, but it was a box that says "do not show this" and I clicked on that and he went and everything was fine.  But as I click on something that would allow them to download on my computer?  Is there anyway to check it or restore before it like you can with a pc?

If something has been downloaded on your computer?  If this isn't the case, then you're fine.  It was a browser hijacker, and it is common on the types of sites that you should avoid, because that's how they scam people.  On the one hand, I have Time Warner as well and TW would not resume the display of your browser with a message that you have malware.  They would have no way of knowing.

If you didn't call all the numbers, download anything or install anything, your computer has not been compromised.  In the future, move away the following types of sites:

  • XXX sites
  • torrent sites
  • Group download sites (CNET, Softonic, download (dot) com, MacUpdate, etc..)
  • MP3 download sites (Mp3 Skull, mp3monkey, etc.)
  • any site that says you can do or download something for free that you would otherwise cost you money

If it doesn't happen ever again for any reason, Force Quit Safari (-> force quit-> Safari), and then restart the browser without failure by pressing the SHIFT key.  This will prevent any previous windows/tabs to reopen.  In addition, install an adblocker as Adblock Plus in your browser if you do not already done.
