How many network adapters I - ESXi 4.1 with iSCSI

I was wondering if someone could help me give a sense the news I read on # NIC for ESXi 4.1.  I came across the following article, but I'm not sure I understand all parts of traffic that he speaks:

http://livingonthecloud.blogspot.com/2009/09/ESXi-networking-best-practices.html

At the moment I have 6 cards 1 GB on each of my 3 servers.  I connect to my SAN via iSCSI, so I know I'm going to need at least 2 of these network adapters for that traffic. I know I'll need at least 2 NICs for connection between my ESXi server and my switch to the network of the VM.  What I don't understand is what I really need for the VMKernel FT, VMkernal Vmotion and VMKernal the Network Administration.  I do not plan on using Vmotion very often at all, so I'm not concerned about its impact on my network.

Any advice?  I need to replace my double NICs with Quad NIC card or is it exaggerated?

The management doesn't have a dedicated network card. It can share the network with virtual machines cards.

In this case the following configuration would be interesting:

vSwitch0: (3 NIC uplinks) (assuming vmnic0, vmnic1 vmnic2)

Port group 1 - networking (vmnic0 and vmnic1-> active vmnic2,-> stand-by)

Port group 2 - network of the VM (vmnic0 and vmnic1-> active vmnic2,-> stand-by)

Port 3 - VM Network Group (vmnic0 and vmnic1-> stand-by, vmnic2-> active)-for the "Pervasive SQL.

vSwitch1: (1 NIC/uplink)

Port group 1 - VMkernel for vMotion on a separate network (192.168.x.x)

vSwitch2: (2 cards network/links rising)

configuration by following the best practices of your iSCSI storage provider

In this way the "Pervasive SQL" would have a dedicated NIC (vmnic2) and may switch to another NETWORK card in the event of disruption of the network.

It seems that your computer has both a wired (10 / 100 Mbps) card (adapter) and a wireless adapter.

You don't need to have both of them enabled (you have to activate one of them).

Your wired connection will probably be more Rapids (100 Mbps) as your wireless connection. It will also not be subject to intervention by your neighbors.

Wireless connections are convenient for portability, but may suffer interference from your neighbor's wireless connections, and/or have degraded performance according to the distance and obstacles that esist between your computer and your wireless router.

If your computer is a desktop computer, you can consider using the wired adapter and the deactivation of the wireless card.

If your computer is portable (for example, a laptop computer), then you can use the adapter (activate) the wireless and disable the wired (Ethernet) adapter.

Hi all, still how much for my application to interact with the Timesten database?
As far as I know, we can connect directly to the database without network load that improves performance, should my application only to specify the DSN name under the name of DSN Manager data? There is no document to clarify that clearly.
The other approach is c/s connection and there are 3 commucation protocols, such as plain TCP/IP, sockets, UNIX domain and the CPI, right?

Yes, that's correct. (Preferably) direct mode when the application and TimesTen are on the same machine. UNIX domain socket and shared memory IPC server local (only for cases of special purpose given that the direct mode is faster and more) and normal TCP/IP client/server (local or remote).

The specific details on how the application connects depends on which API that it uses (ODBC, OCI, Pro * C, JDBC, ODP .NET). For ODBC and JDBC, you must specify a data source name and use the driver corresponding (direct-mode driver or client driver). For the OIC that is configured through SQL * Net and TNSNAMES. ORA and for ODP .NET, I don't remember without it looking up. Please see the TimesTen for relevant API documentation for full details.

  • How many quadrature encoders may be read together with the cDAQ-9188 chassis?

We will record position periodically 8 engines (at the same time as we are to the corresponding samples entered analog).  It seems that the 4 built-in counters limited chassis to 4 encoders.  Is this correct?  I am familiar with modules of counter PLC which manage high-speed counting, and then the CPU posts periodically to update the total values.  This is how the NI 9401 card would work?

  • ESXi 4.1 or ESXi 5.0 with iSCSI SAN

    Hello

I'm trying to establishing an environment that is / will be an iSCSI SAN backend entirely.  I know of a lot of reading that the best practice is to config the ESXi host with:

VMKernel > vmnic > physical network adapter > switch ports > port on SAN (config 1:1 - no grouping of vmnic)

    Environment:

    ESXi 4.1 & 5.0

    Force10 switches

    EqualLogic iSCSI SAN (PS4000 & 6000)

Here's my real question (playing the Devil's advocate):

Why I shouldn't team 3-4 vnmics on a vswitch with multiple vmkernel ports?

Given my environment.  Can someone point me to a technical document that explains what will / could happen if I set up the environment ESXi in this way?

    Thank you

So, basically, we want the SAN to take full responsibility for the failover instead of the network and/or the SAN for who should resolve the failure (which could lead to the time of restitutio in integrum longer session).   I understand that correctly?

Yes, that's right, we want to stack storage for vSphere manage with path selection and tipping - and by connecting each vmknic directly to the physical vmnic map we sort of "simulate" how to CF cards and also ignores the network failover mechanisms. As you probably know you also need to "bind" the iSCSI Software to the two vmnic (GUI now in 5.0, esxcli in 4.x)

  • 5.0 to 5.5 with iSCSI ESXi ESXi

I have some servers ESXi 5.0 with iSCSI configured for my storage. If I'm on 5.5 ESXi, should I reconfigure the iSCSI? If so, how differente different is the configuration? I know that we had to set up when we went from 4.x to 5.0 ESXi ESXi and the configuration options are very different. Is this the case with the new version?

No, you stay within the same major version and it should work without any problems. ESX ESXi (i) 4-5 were important steps, they are smaller. Made this upgrade in environments of production before without any problem or reconfiguration.

  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.1 with storage iSCSI software to ESXi 5.5

I intend to upgrade ESXi 4.1 with which I have attached to ESXi 5.5 iSCSI software storage

I've updated all my guests who were on the SAN storage with no problems.

I would like to know that if it there's nothing I should take care before I update the host connected iSCSI to ESXi 5.5, as for the hosts with SAN attached storage I made to remove the cables of SAN before upgrading the host.

Also, if all known problems, you will be informed during the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.5 with iSCSI Software storage, please let me know?

If there is no different process to upgrade coz in ESXi 4.1 I do not see this link ports of iSCSI vmkernel ports software iSCSI but I know in ESXi5.5 we have to or I just launch a procedure of standard upgrade via the Update Manager and everything will be taken care?

    Thanks in advance

With ESXi prior to version 5, linking ports had to be done via command line. However, if it has been configured correctly, you should be able to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (assuming that the host has not been previously updated since version 3). BTW. the last time that I disconnected the host of storage for an upgrade has been with ESX 3.0.

  • How many cards network vmotion

    Hi all

We are moving from vSphere 4.1 to 5.1 vSphere.  As part of this effort, we have the ability to reconfigure a few things, including the number of network adapters, that we have for vmotion.  I know it can withstand up to 16 x 1 GB NIC.

Our server environment is not 10 GB yet, but we have a total of 12 x 1 GB NIC ports on most of our ESX (edge 4 x and 2 x 4-port cards) host with ports to save.

We create the new environment 5.1, is there a best practice around how many ports to configure for vmotion?  I expect the answer will be 'it depends', but I just wanted to get an idea of the factors that should be taken into account for this?

The number of virtual machines on each ESXi host would be a review?  (For example, when place you it in maintenance mode.)

We just need to experiment with it ourselves to see what is the right number (for us)?

Is there a minimum number, we should consider (maybe 2 or 3)?  Should we configure everything as much as we can?

    Thanks for your help...

    Hello

You have reason... it depends on

VMotion operations are very fast with vSphere, if you already have a 1 GB dedicated on each host. So if you have a downtime planned for one of your hosts, I think that it would not be a second that is necessary. 8 vmotion operations at the same time could be very well (if you have 10Gb)... but maybe is not worth if you can wait the 30 seconds more...

If you have a DRS, which uses VMotion to load balance virtual machines between hosts, perhaps a second NETWORK card would be a good idea... but once... If this configuration does not work properly with 1 NETWORK card you should see warnings now in your vCenter.

So, what best practices talk is how to provide the best possible solution to a scenario with some limitations that you should consider. Availability would be one of the things to consider and one side for availability "acquisition cost" (budget is another milestone to examine each project). As you already have multiple network interface cards, this is not a limitation and a good design could consider having a second NETWORK adapter dedicated to VMotion (two vswitches or the one with the two NIC related to it... depends on if your host has CPU contention or not... otherwise, I would recommend two vSwitches so you HA there too).

VMotion (at least for me) is not essential... First of all, I would like to confirm that you will be NIC 'extra' for the most critical traffic such as VM presentation or storage.

It of only my point of view (with some best practices of VMware on it), hope this has helped you!

  • How many switches must be configured and min no network interface cards?

    Hello

    We will implement the ESXi5.0.

We would like to know if we use different ports for network management and vMotion groups?  It seems that two of them use the same (different from ESX 4) IP address.

In addition, my supervisor would like to know what is the minimum number of network interface cards to use (because the server has no slot PCIe)?

    Your opinion is requested.

    Thank you

    TonyJK wrote:

Since we implement VLANS on our site and based on the documentation, ESXi 5 gets only 1 battery IP, wonder what is the best way to cope.

It is true that ESXi has that one battery IP, which is very good compared to the other two in ESX (Linux in the Service Console and the Vmkernel). However, we have only an IP stack means that it is the same driver tcp/ip, but does not mean that we cannot have multiple IP addresses.

For example, you can create a Vmkernel how many interfaces you want and assign different IP addresses, which could be on the same network or on different.

Even if you don't have a VLAN in your environment I would still recommend using another IP network for vMotion for your management. This will make the two a little more 'best practice', easier to different and you would be good too preperred if you implement VLANs in the future.
