How to convert a thickness thin provision

Hello

I converted physical machine to virtual .during this process, I chose to files on the hard drive thick delivery.

now I want to convert all files to provision thin to save storage.how can I convert thick to thin provision.

I haven't used this link procedure Storage vMotion is much easier, and yes it free your place if you go thin thickness.

    I'm learning...

I produced a book printed in the format 6 x 9 "and now wants to publish a corresponding ebook. Setting up a new document allows the opening of Digital Publishing, I do not see a conversion function.

I tried to open a new document for Digital Publishing and Place the printed book in the pages, but only one place page. I had added the total number of pages in the document, there was room to move forward.

    How can this be achieved?

Thanks for the references of my titles on lynda.com Derek!

That's all, so source of confusion for new users, you have my sympathy Dennis, but soon it will emerge. I think that a main thing, is that usually no need to start over. Just do a save slot for your printing doc and autour mess with here, then export to epub. Especially if you go at fixed disposal. Keep it in a 6 "by 9" and the export of single - or-(spreads) pages as an EPUB.

I have a number of titles on lynda.com on creating the files ePub, everything for the beginning/intermediate ebook designers. The three most common are:

Creation of layout fixed EPUB with InDesign CC

This is for InDesign CC and CC 2014 and explains how to convert an EPUB of provision fixed an InDesign layout. It includes a full chapter on using interactive elements (animations, slideshows, cross-references, etc.) as well as a complete work around some issues chapter. And I shows how to crack open and add simple code to make things that InDesign can't do (yet) like integrate a video hosted remotely.

    InDesign CC: EPUB Foundation

This warranty covers create ebooks EPUB 2 and 3 of the EPUB recomposable more typical of InDesign, which requires much more preparation for the InDesign file as ch-layout (but it is much more widely supported that the Fixed-Layout format is). This includes converting the file into a Kindle Book too, that you can't do with a layout fixed epub.

    Create a fixed layout EPUB

I wrote and recorded this a few years before InDesign took in charge the export format. It shows how to create an EPUB fixed layout from scratch - I show how to write HTML files yourself and includes a template to help you get started. There are chapters on the conversion of PDF files and earlier versions of InDesign at fixed disposal too.

All these include free sample movies, but you will need a subscription to lynda.com to see all the films. You can usehttp://lynda.com/freepass/amconcepcion for a free trial week. You will however need to give them your credit card at the front and do not forget to cancel before the road of the week.  However, the sub is only $25 / month and you can cancel after one month, it's a good deal.

You should check InDesignSecrets.com, InDesign Magazineand ePubSecrets.com for more current info on InDesign and EPUB.

I hope some of these help!

  • Thin Provisioning vs thick Provisioning

Some users say they are not too Committee a disc thin provision.

But I think that if they are not over - commit then how are they case using the benefits of provisioning. Instead why don't they use thick available?

You guys agree with my opinion?

I agree, if there is enough disk space, thin provisioning is basically no benefit to this transfer.

  • Thin vs. lazy thickness set to zero + SAN thin provisioning

Is there an advantage to using thick lazy set to zero and then using a provisioning to the FC LUN by opposition level just using Vmware Thin provisioning?  I guess I could use thin for VMS and LUNS, too.

Updated zero lazy thick result in less lock/delay when filling unused space from end

I don't think we see any economy using eager Zero thick with San provisioning on our Netapp.

You should see the original in vsphere, but thin format discs on your San.

  • Thin provisioning question

    Tonight

We recently P2V. by 4 Dell servers that all went well.

When it came to thin provisioning of storage, we encountered a slight impediment. No matter what we do, we cannot recover any space with a provisioning.

For example, we have only one server, 62 GB C. We have done the following:

    Defragmented

    CHKDSK would be

    SDelete - c (and even z, followed by another - c)

Then migrate to another store of data configured as thin. We seem to get 0 space back even if Windows reports being 31.6 GB of free disk space.

Don't get me wrong in the past doing the 4 steps above still retrieved the free space, but just this time on all 4 servers, we cannot recover anything.

I have even converted to thick, and then to thin in case something to be funny.

With the help of ESX 4 fully patched on all hosts. The only thing I can think is that when we thin put in service in the past, we were running ESX 4 with no patches and we have recently updated to the current version, but I can't really believe that a fix/update would have broken something as Basic.

    Any idea?

There is a very simple solution for this problem, I found a couple of weeks ago.

Do the usual "sdelete - c C:" stuff, and then migrate as Thin put in service in a store of data with a * different blocksize *.

Then it just works how it has always been.

It's only when you migrate it to a store of data with the same size block, it's broken.

  • Thin Provisioning not reduce size of backup

I use ghettoVCB to save some of my virtual machines. I changed some of these virtual machines to use a provisioning in an attempt to reduce the size of backup. When I browse my store of data using vSphere Client, I see that the thin provisioned disks take less space. However, when I go back to a NFS store on a Windows Server 2008 R2, backup sizes are the same as they were when I used thick provisioning. Is this normal on a Windows NFS share? I did specify a provisioning for ghettoVCB.

I ran sdelete and VMWare Converter to try to reduce the disks; This decreases the size of the disk that I see in the browser to store data, but the size of the backups on the NFS share was always the same.

I don't have access to an NFS server ATM, but tests on a ZFS volume w/de-dupe that is exported outside like NFS, I can confirm that on the host ESX virtual machine appears as thin provisioned and when you do ls - lha on the VMDK is 8 GB and not 0 GB, but when you look at the free data store no space has been consumed during the creation of this new virtual machine. It all depends on your server and it is the configuration of NFS, I agree with RParker, you'll want to enable deduplication on your NFS server if it is supported. Put into operation end is handled differently on the NFS Server vs on VMFS volume and it dictated by the server NFS itself on how it is configured to manage a provisioning.

  • Shrink a thin provisioned VMDK

I have a VMDK thin provisioned is 500 GB. The real Windows Partition is only 150 GB. I would change the VMDK disk 150 GB thick put into service. What is the best way for me to go on this?

If you prefer GUI, then use the converter otherwise vmkfstools is a powerful CLI command.

  • VM disk thick / thin

How will I know if the VM disk is supplied thickness / think?  Any tool vmware or 3rd party to verify vmdisk is thick / Think.

If you change the settings of a virtual computer, look at the hard drive, and discover the type it will show if it is thick or thin provisioned.

  • Cannot convert disc thickness in fines

I would like to convert a VHD to a thick disk placed in service in a service end disc (this is a SCSI disk) when I try to use VMware converter to convert, the option is not there to choose thin provisioned as it was before.  When I try to migrate it to a different data store, and it offers the possibility to convert the disc type to 'thin', I go through this process and it migrates to a new data store.  However, after current migration still there a thick supplied disk even if I chose "thin" when I migrated.

What is this virtual machine that could result in the inability to convert a thin disk?

    Thank you

A thin vDisk should show like Thin, even if it is full of data which makes its size the same as a thick vDisk.

SVmotion should actually "move" the vDisks to convert. There is no command to convert a thin thickness, it is rather a process of cloning, being the clone of slim type on the new destination.

Ensure that the virtual machine has no snapshots before making the SVmotion.

In addition, here you have a script called makeThin that allows you to convert all the vDisks you want, whether or not the virtual machine has snapshots, and it does not require a to move around the virtual computer.

  • Models of thin provision

Looking to change my form of models thick to thin provisioned disks. The benefits are that they occupy less space and faster deployment.

I have Win3K3 and Win3K8 models. Models have been created initially with ESX 3.5 so that they always have hardware virtual version 4. We

are in the process of upgrading our ESX hosts to version 4.0 U1. Our virtual Center is already updated to version 4.0 U1. No downside to

    do this?

    Mike

It is actually better to store your models as thin and then convert them into thickness during deployment.   They will use less space on the LUN model and should deploy more quickly.

  • Thin Provisioning Server NFS

    Hello

I installed NFS server (Debian) for my ESXi4 server and I would thin provisioning on this NFS server.

But when I create a new virtual machine, there is a message telling me that the allocation policy will be determined by the NFS server.

At the moment all my VMS I create on this server NFS is 'thick', so I would like to know how I can configure the NFS server to allow "thin" commissioning."

    Kind regards

    Hello

Have you tried to use the option - sparse (or - S) flag to rsync? This should take care of thin configured files. A svmotion the VM after rsyncing should also work.

    I hope that helps!

    Hello hamm3r,.

It is normal that you feel. A directory of the regular list will show 50 GB. You need to do a query (use of the drive/directory) with the following:

    -ah *.

Which should show the actual size of the vmdk file. You can also watch free space of your data store in the VI client to check that it lines up with your expectations. I hope this helps.

Don't forget to mark this "correct" answer or 'useful', if you found it useful (you'll also points).

  • Is it possible to migrate a virtual machine to thin provisioned disk?

I have about 100 VM in a resource pool dedicated to called "Archive"... Well, archiving.  These virtual machines are currently powered off but every now and then we will get pulled for a developer to work on (they are for the most part, the virtual computer with client customizations if they are changed about once a year).  I'm quickly running out of space on this SAN but all discs are thick provisioned and using the disc is maybe 20-30% on average.  Also, I want to move them to a new large store of data I created for them.

Of course, I choose Migrate & gt; Change store data & gt; Thin provision in vSphere Format and I'm done.  However, it would be nice to not do this 100 times.

Move-VM does not seem to be capable of this, and I have not been able to find a workaround.  Is there a way to convert the thin and then perhaps Move-VM? Or I'll just on this all wrong.

    Thank you!

    You can try this script?

He's moving vms to data store 'EMCSAN:Datastore01' trying to change the format of storage for Thin

    $dsView = Get-Datastore -Name "EMCSAN:Datastore01" | Get-View -Property Name

    Get-VM  | % {
    $vmView = $_ | Get-View -Property Name

    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpec
    $spec.datastore = $dsView.MoRef
    $spec.transform = "sparse"

    $vmView.RelocateVM($spec, $null)
    }

  • ESXI 5.1 "the disc is not thin-provisioned" after copying to the new data store vmdk

I wanted to create an external backup as a 2nd VM ready-to-run on the 2nd data store.

I've removed all snapshots, stop the machine virtual and exported the OVF file to a computer, adjusted to the size of the original virtual machine starts in Gparted to update the partition and restart. All very well.

I then tried to deploy the OVF in the data store alternative (235GB slim, thickness according to the deployment of 250 Wizard). I tried both thick and thin but the error message "cannot deploy the OVF. The operation was cancelled by the user.

I then manually downloaded the VMDK & OVF file to the 2nd data store and tried to inflate but then received the message "a specified parameter was not correct. The disc isn't thin provisioned. ».

It seems I have dealing with the same thing, as this is the document here (http://pubs.vmware.com/Release_Notes/en/vsphere/55/vsphere-vcenter-server-55u3-release-notes.html).  However, I have no idea what to do now... and I'm worried because it seems that my backup plan may not work if I can't restore an OVF/VMDK from a disk of visas.

The solution to the first problem here: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2172950#2172950 that solved my problem 2nd too.
