  Just in case someone wonders on this subject, I'll post the solution that I found...

  There is a javascript routine included with DW CS3 called create Web Photo Album.js and it is in the subdirectory/orders of your setup of DW. This is the file that calls and control of fireworks to optimize the images, create thumbnails and write the code table to display thumbs, etc..

  It took a bit of work (I'm not that fluent in javascript... know just enough to be dangerous) but I found where the code adds an underscore and the three letters for the filename filetype. Change this piece of code (4 places) solved the problem for me. Now my 1234.jpg of origin file is renamed is no LONGER 1234_jpg.jpg and everything works well.

  As a side benefit, I also found where and how to change the default values for the dialog box that appears and found where add some additional features (for example, the title for each image). All it takes is a bit of work.

  I'm guessing that function was probably removed from the programme earlier. I don't remember seeing it, but I started using DW in CS3 which is a few versions after MX.
