  You call system.exit() in the Builder before entering the EventDispatcher.   Thanks for the help anyway, in the end I was able to get the desired effect by modifying the code slightly to reuse the same animation timer rather than create a new one when the selected item changes. The timer is started in the constructor of the ListField. Works very well.
